Chapter 55: Ch- 54: Why death always favors me ?
The rain was getting heavier.
Gwen stood outside a coffee shop, seeking shelter under an umbrella. Peter stood beside her.
"I'm sorry, Peter," Gwen said softly, wiping the rain from her face. Her mood was heavy with guilt. "I don't know why my dad would act like that."
"Maybe it wasn't entirely his fault," Peter replied, watching the raindrops fall just beyond the umbrella. "You and I both know Captain Stacy isn't usually this irritable or easily influenced by his emotions. That wasn't like him at all."
Hearing Peter's words, Gwen began to reflect. Her father's behavior had indeed been out of character. At the time, she had been too angry to notice, but now, thinking back on it, something definitely seemed off.
A short temper, violent tendencies, not thinking things through—pointing a gun at people? That wasn't like her father at all. He would never behave that way under normal circumstances.
"You're right," Gwen murmured. "That wasn't like him at all. And he didn't seem physically well, either."
She thought back to the argument she'd had with her father. Something had clearly been wrong with him. She regretted the harsh words she had spoken.
"I need to go back and check on him," Gwen said suddenly. She pulled her hood over her head and darted back into the pouring rain. "I'll call you later."
Peter stood under the umbrella, watching her disappear into the downpour.
---
At Forest Hills, Peter sat at a desk, studying the red business card in his hand. The rain outside continued to beat against the window.
The card belonged to Matt Murdock, with his contact information.
Peter put the card down and opened his laptop, typing "Matt Murdock" into the search bar. A slew of information about the lawyer appeared on the screen.
Scrolling through the text, Peter frowned. In this world, Daredevil didn't seem like the hero he knew. Instead, he had connections with gangs and frequently helped criminals evade justice. His reputation in New York wasn't good at all.
"This isn't the Marvel universe I know," Peter thought, closing his laptop and turning his attention to the calendar on the wall.
It wasn't surprising. In this world, it was Gwen who had been bitten by the radioactive spider and become Spider-Man.
He gently touched his chest, his thoughts racing. If this wasn't the main universe and he wasn't Spider-Man, it meant that Uncle Ben might not have died. So, who would be the one to face the tragedy Spider-Man was known for? Would it be him, or someone else?
Suddenly, a name came to his mind.
"Buzz~"
Peter's phone vibrated, snapping him out of his thoughts. The caller ID showed it was Gwen.
A bad feeling crept into Peter's chest as he answered.
The moment he picked up, Gwen's sobbing voice came through. "Peter, something's happened to my dad!"
Peter's worst fears were confirmed.
---
Peter stood outside the operating room at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Gwen was quietly sobbing, her body trembling with sorrow.
"What did the doctor say, Gwen?" Peter asked softly after she had calmed down a little.
"The doctor said my dad went into anaphylactic shock. He's not out of danger yet," Gwen replied, tears streaming down her face. "When I went back to the office, he had already collapsed. I don't know what happened."
Two more streams of hot tears fell from her eyes.
"Don't worry, everything will be fine," Peter reassured her. He paused, then pulled out a stack of cash wrapped in oil paper from his pocket.
"There's fifty thousand dollars here. Use it to pay for the hospital fees."
Gwen took the money, looking confused.
"No!" she protested, shaking her head. "That's the money for your treatment."
Though she was short on money, she couldn't accept Peter's.
"My condition has nearly been cured. If you don't believe me, I'll find a doctor to prove it," Peter said, patting Gwen's blonde hair gently. "Besides, you helped me before. You won't refuse my help now, right?"
Gwen felt an overwhelming urge to hug Peter and cry, but she held back. Instead, she wiped her tears and nodded firmly.
"Thank you. I'll repay you as soon as I can."
"I'm going to talk to the doctor. Wait here for me," Peter said, walking towards the doctor's office.
Even though Gwen had become Spider-Man, in moments like these, she was still just a vulnerable girl.
Would the growth of a superhero always be accompanied by sacrifice and death? Peter wondered, shaking the thought from his mind. He couldn't afford to believe in fatalism.
---
A few minutes later, in Dr. Strange's office, Peter inquired about George Stacy's condition.
"In fact, Sheriff Stacy's condition is similar to something we've seen before," Strange admitted, hesitating. "But I'm not entirely sure."
Peter's brow furrowed. "It was that man who attacked you, right?"
"Yes," Strange nodded. "Dan Steele. He experienced the same strange shock symptoms. Unfortunately, he died less than a day after falling into a coma. I'm concerned that Sheriff Stacy might suffer the same fate."
"Aren't you supposed to be the 'Hand of God'?" Peter pressed. "Dr. Strange, you can't be telling me there's nothing you can do."
"There's simply not enough time," Strange replied, setting down his pen. "Even if I wanted to study this condition, solving it in a single day is impossible. I'm a doctor, not a magician."
"Your hands are said to perform miracles," Peter said, his voice firm. "Dr. Strange, don't give up just yet."
After his conversation with Strange, Peter returned to the hallway outside the operating room, but Gwen was nowhere to be found. Eventually, he found her sitting on a chair nearby, her knees drawn up to her chest.
"I heard everything, Peter," Gwen said, her voice muffled. "My mother, Helen, was so good to me. And my father loved her deeply. I always thought I was lucky."
She looked up, her face tear-streaked. "Until I went to my first funeral—my mother's. Some children believe death will only come for others, but not them. But if there's one truth in my life, it's that death always seems to favor Gwen Stacy."
Tears welled up in her eyes again. "Why is fate so cruel to me?"
