Chapter 184: Chapter 184: Powerless Fury
Both men were intelligent—otherwise, they wouldn't have risen to their current positions. The fact that Han Yu specifically mentioned Hulk instead of Banner meant that the person Han Yu had found was no longer Bruce Banner, but the Hulk.
On their way to the scene, they couldn't help but feel puzzled. The Avengers had been searching for gamma energy signals for some time, yet they had detected nothing. If Banner had been in his Hulk form all this time, the system should have picked up such gamma radiation—levels that far exceeded a nuclear bomb.
When they arrived at the general store, the scene that greeted them left them stunned.
Inside the storage room, Han Yu had constructed a solid cage using his Green Lantern energy. Within the cage, Hulk remained in a half-green, half-red state, roaring furiously and thrashing about.
Unfortunately, all his efforts were nothing more than powerless rage.
Between the thin bars of the Green Lantern cage was a layer of energy film. This film not only reinforced the cage but also isolated sound. Although Hulk seemed to be roaring deafeningly inside the cage, not a sound could be heard outside.
"Han, what's going on here?"
Staring at the enraged "Banner," Stark was visibly confused.
Captain America began circling the cage, carefully examining the current state of Hulk. The figure inside resembled a mutated version of Banner himself—muscles even bulkier than his own. While his overall appearance still passed as vaguely human, his half-green, half-red muscles made him look anything but normal.
Han Yu sighed lightly and looked at Captain America. "Do you remember the last time we were attacked at S.H.I.E.L.D. by Pierce and his team?"
"I remember. Why?" Captain America nodded.
"What happened to Pierce afterward?" Han Yu asked.
This was classified information within S.H.I.E.L.D., but since only the three of them were present—two trusted Avengers and Han Yu, who had top-level S.H.I.E.L.D. clearance—Captain America saw no need to hold back.
"He was executed by firing squad. Afterward, we wanted to analyze why he had become so erratic. A team was sent to perform an autopsy on his body to collect samples for research. Banner was one of the participants," Captain America explained truthfully.
"And then?" Han Yu prompted.
Captain America continued, "Not long after the autopsy began, the team members started complaining about feeling unwell. At first, we thought it was because dissecting a body made them uncomfortable…"
At this point, Captain America's eyes widened in realization. Han Yu had specifically brought up Pierce, who had displayed a similar frenzied state, and now Banner, who had participated in the autopsy, was exhibiting the same symptoms.
The answer was clear.
It was because they had come into contact with Pierce's corpse!
"Find everyone who was involved in the autopsy of Pierce's body—immediately!" Han Yu ordered urgently. If Banner had been exposed to some kind of contagious virus, he wasn't the only one at risk.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Captain America rushed outside to make a phone call, as the room they were in was shielded from external signals.
"What are you guys even talking about? I'm completely lost—someone explain it to me!" Stark demanded.
He hadn't been privy to the events surrounding Pierce, so Han Yu and Captain America's conversation left him utterly confused.
Han Yu quickly explained the entire chain of events to Stark. The latter finally understood, but his expression grew grim.
Given the current situation, if the virus infecting Banner was indeed contagious, it was crucial to determine how it spread. Was it airborne? Through physical contact? Or perhaps via droplets?
Only by identifying the method of transmission could they take proper precautions to contain the situation.
Captain America soon re-entered the room, but this time, his face was etched with urgency. He quickly approached Han Yu and Stark, saying, "Bad news. I just received word that at least ten people in S.H.I.E.L.D. are exhibiting extreme violent tendencies, and they occasionally display eerie smiles. As for the team members who performed the autopsy on Pierce's body—they're all dead. Their bodies were found with wide-open eyes and twisted, ear-to-ear grins on their faces."
Hearing this, Han Yu and Stark felt a chill run down their spines. The description of their deaths was so horrifying it sent shivers through them.
"Use my authority to immediately lock down S.H.I.E.L.D. Gather everyone who was on Pierce's floor the day he died and investigate every place they've been since. Assign personnel to keep them under surveillance and put the entire agency on high alert!" Han Yu ordered decisively.
As he spoke, an aura of command radiated from him—a presence of authority that both Captain America and Stark found surprising. They couldn't help but shudder, startled by the sheer intensity of Han Yu's demeanor.
Without wasting time, Captain America took Han Yu's clearance and began issuing directives throughout S.H.I.E.L.D. as instructed.
The sudden state of high alert left many in S.H.I.E.L.D. confused, but hearing that the orders came directly from Captain America and were authorized by the Director's clearance, they acted swiftly without questioning the reasons behind them.
Stark, with a serious expression, said, "The fact that Banner is the only one from the autopsy team still alive—could it be because of the Hulk in him?"
He glanced at the Hulk, who was still raging inside the cage. The creature's face, however, now bore the same eerie smile Captain America had just described.
Witnessing this firsthand, Stark shuddered again. It was deeply unsettling.
"I think so," Han Yu said grimly. "This virus seems to drive people insane, causing their heart rates to spike. Ordinary people can't handle that kind of frenzy. Most would die within a few days from cardiac overload."
Han Yu likened the situation to someone with an extreme fear of ghosts being forced to watch the scariest horror movies non-stop for 24 hours. The psychological and physical strain would be unbearable for most. While regular people might jump at the occasional scare in a movie, someone with severe phobias subjected to that intensity would likely break.
"It's simply not something anyone can endure," Han Yu concluded.
"Wait a minute—Nick Fury and Natasha were also present that day!" Han Yu suddenly remembered.
From outside the storage room, Captain America called back reassuringly, "Don't worry, I've already thought of that. They've been placed in isolation as well!"
Hearing this, Han Yu relaxed slightly. With Fury and Natasha's mental fortitude, there was a chance they could resist the virus's effects, though it would likely amplify any hidden madness within them.
Given their skills and positions, if they were to act out, the consequences could be catastrophic.
"We need to develop an antidote, or this could cause massive damage to the city," Stark said firmly.
Han Yu nodded. "That's exactly why I came to you."
"But I can't do this alone," Stark admitted. "I don't specialize in biology. Do you know anyone with expertise in that area? We'll need a biological specialist."
Han Yu thought for a moment, and a name suddenly came to mind.
"Charles!" he exclaimed.
