Chapter 31: Monster
"Impossible!" Everyone stood up as they saw the man's face turn into that of their former friend.
"T-Tony?" Jennifer was stunned. She quickly glanced at her locket and remembered her first meeting him back in the forest. He flew down before her and his eyes were actually on that locket. "Back then... You were looking at this locket..." She clenched the locket in her palm.
"This can't be. T-this must be some kind of trick!" Susan exclaimed.
"This is not possible," Fury exclaimed, shocked beyond belief. "The snap!" He caught onto something.
"You know where your plan failed? You see, the suit failed after Thanos stabbed me and then I snapped. Had the suit failed after the snap, I would have thought the Infinity Stones glitched the suit. But lucky you. Back then when I had the Infinity Stones in my control, I tried to save myself, but it didn't work. Oh, how I wished to find the traitors myself with my dying breath... The Infinity Stones or some other power sent my soul to another Multiverse. And now, here I am with the traitors before me... Hahahaha!" Bruce started laughing out loud.
Everyone was stunned. Their heads were spinning from the revelations they received.
Bruce closed the camera and stopped the public broadcast. He took this chance to give Elena the order to find Nick Fury's wife. Given his nature, that bastard won't open his mouth that easily. So, this time, he won't show any mercy to anyone.
"T... Tony..." Pepper stuttered as she stumbled back on the chair.
"The love of my life stabbed me in the back. I changed myself for you, Pepper... Hahaha... You bitch! I loved you! I gave you everything... My life... My love... I would have done anything for you... And you... You... You killed me! You killed me! You fucking killed me!" Bruce's voice echoed throughout the room.
"Bruce..." Selina hugged Bruce from the back, trying to calm him down.
"Fuck!" Bruce's entire body trembled, fists clenched so tight that his knuckles turned white. He couldn't stop the storm of memories crashing through him—every moment he'd shared with Pepper, every dream he'd once had. The echo of her laughter, her smile, the way she'd grounded him. It was all now tainted with a bitter, unforgivable lie.
Selina held him tightly from behind, her fingers pressing firmly against his chest as if trying to anchor him to reality. She whispered softly in his ear, "Bruce… breathe. Stay with me."
But his eyes stayed fixed on Pepper. His voice was ragged, each word laced with anguish. "I changed for you, Pepper. Do you know what that took? Every flaw, every broken piece of me, I fixed it—for us. And you just… ripped it away."
Tears shimmered in Pepper's eyes, and she lowered her gaze, unable to face him. Her body shook as she choked on her own words, "Tony… I… thought I was saving everyone."
"You didn't trust me!" His voice was a raw, wounded growl. "I've fought monsters, gods, beings beyond our comprehension. But I always thought I'd be safe with you. I gave you everything I was, everything I had—and you betrayed me. You sabotaged my suit, knowing I might not survive." He swallowed hard, a twisted laugh escaping his lips. "And all for a prophecy. A maybe."
Clint, visibly shaken, broke the silence, his voice simmering with anger. "You sold him out because of what he might become? He gave his life for all of us—and you took that choice away."
Fury tried to step in, his tone measured but cautious. "Tony, if you could see what Strange showed us—"
"I don't care!" Bruce's eyes flashed, his voice reverberating through the room like thunder. He stood, shaking off Selina's grasp, his gaze bearing down on Fury and Pepper like a physical force. "You took my life without a second thought, without even letting me decide. You made a choice that wasn't yours to make."
Silence hung in the room as everyone absorbed the gravity of his words. Mystique, standing off to the side, finally spoke, her voice low but filled with uncharacteristic empathy. "Trust and betrayal cut deeper than any prophecy."
Jennifer transformed into her She-Hulk form and smashed the table in front of her in anger. "I'll kill you." She pointed her finger at Pepper and then to Fury, "Then you. You better spit out the location of Tony's old body. Right fucking now!"
"Even if you kill me or her, you won't get anything," Fury said coldly.
"Yeah, I know you won't open your mouth," Bruce said before taking a deep breath.
He turned his head to the side and gave Selina a nod, holding her hand on his chest. She gave a nod and stepped back. He sat down on the chair and took out another holographic projection device. He placed it on the table and activated it.
On the holographic projection, played live footage.
A female Skrull sitting in the living room, watching the news, and outside her house were six sentinels, humanoid size, flying around. "What was her name again? Priscilla Davis? No... Ah! I remember now, Varra. You know her, Fury?"
Fury's face visibly paled. He clenched his fists, trying to keep his voice steady. "You are bluffing."
"It took a while to find her. You hid her well. But you see, as long as there is technology, my AI and Sentinels can find her easily," Bruce said, not even paying attention to Pepper's horrified expression.
"You wouldn't dare hurt an innocent woman," Fury said through gritted teeth.
"Innocent? Ha! That's a good one, coming from you. Weren't the Skrulls a threat to humanity once? I remember hearing about a little Skrull uprising just before Magneto's war. So maybe it's smarter to eliminate them all before we get another one of those disasters, don't you think? You did everything you did to 'save humanity,' right? So why not let me help out? Yeah, I know she's your wife. But she's still a Skrull. And let's not forget—they nearly succeeded in a rebellion against humans. If we're going by your logic, the same logic you used to kill me over some damned prophecy, then it's only fair I deal with the remaining Skrulls—your wife included—based on their history and the looming 'what if.' "
Bruce paused, then smiled, but his eyes were as cold as ice. He leaned back on the chair. His eyes were on Fury. Although that man was a hardened veteran, right now, he felt fear. His heart was beating fast. He never felt like this before. He was afraid for his wife's life.
"But what if I were to give you a choice? Just one simple question." Bruce continued, "The location of my old body in exchange for your wife. A pretty simple trade. And since you two were lovers, I think it's a pretty fair exchange. But beware, I got betrayed by my love and she's a human. But yours a Skrull." He chuckled.
Fury gritted his teeth. "You... You are just a monster!"
Bruce laughed. "Monster? Me? Well, what are gonna do about it?" Bruce gave him a cruel smile. "Anyway, don't tell me anything. But make the call, Fury. She doesn't have much time. Maybe have a last chat with her before she dies. So, what will it be?"
Everyone turned to look at Fury, waiting for his response. Fury remained silent for a few minutes. In the end, he knew there was no point in hiding anymore. With the technology Bruce had under his control, sooner or later, he would find his old body. So, Fury decided to save his wife and the Skrulls from annihilation.
"You promise to let her and the Skrulls go?" Fury asked.
"I doubt you are in any position to ask or make a deal with me. You didn't give me a choice, did you? But... I'll be the bigger man here and give you a choice. Choose... Your wife or the other Skrulls? But, only after you tell me the location. Speak any more nonsense, and it's over," Bruce said, not giving him any leeway.
"Tony..." Pepper sobbed.
"Shut up! Bitch. I'll deal with you in a moment," Bruce said coldly. He looked at Fury. "You have ten seconds to give me the location of my body."
"You can't be serious. There are hundreds of Skrulls living in peace with humans. You can't kill them all," Fury said, hoping to change Bruce's mind.
"I told you, speak any more nonsense and the deal is over..." Bruce stood up from his chair. "The deal is over." He looked toward Harley and Selina. "Uploading the locations of the Skrulls. Kill them all. And make sure to tell them they are dying because Fury decided to babble nonsense. They deserve to know the truth before their death." He pressed a button on his suit, uploading the location of the Skrulls.
"Wait! I'll give you the location! Please... Don't kill them. I'll give you the location of your body..." Fury shouted in panic. "It's under the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The entry point is on an island named Avalon."
Bruce stared at Fury for a moment. Then raised his right fist in the air. The nanites shifted from his hand, revealing his fingers. The Lightning Ring flashed brightly and in an instant, everyone in that room found themselves standing on an island.
