Chapter 29: Strange Sounds
Chapter 29: Strange Sounds
Xu Lian took Li Xiya and Yang Chan’er to explore their new home.
The house had two main rooms, four side rooms, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen connected to a firewood room, and a cellar.
There was also a small garden in the back and a courtyard in the front.
It was the typical layout of a wealthy household.
It was obvious that Li Xiya and Yang Chan’er were happy with their new home.
Li Xiya seemed to be remembering something. “Brother Lian, the eldest son of the Pei family gave you such a good house. The task he asked you to do must be very difficult, right?”
“It’s not too hard; it’s already done.”
Xu Lian separated the two women holding hands and squeezed himself in between them, holding one in each hand.
It really wasn’t difficult. As the Quarry Patrol Inspector said, the higher-ups had already decided on the Pei family patriarch as the next mayor, but the Pei family didn’t know and felt uneasy, so they asked Xu Lian to contact the Quarry Patrol Inspector. He basically got a free pass.
Upon hearing this, Li Xiya felt relieved and didn’t ask any more questions.
Wang Cuiyun called the three of them to dinner; the meal was ready.
The four of them brought the dishes into the living room to eat, unlike the cramped old house on the old street.
“Master, now that we have this big house, shouldn’t we buy some maids to serve us?”
Wang Cuiyun looked at Xu Lian, her eyes full of anticipation, dreaming of being served.
Xu Lian stuffed the chicken into his mouth, heartily enjoying it, and spat out the bones. “Yes, buy a dozen maids and find yourself a companion. By the way, do you want an older man or a strong man?”
Li Xiya blushed and lightly slapped Xu Lian. “Stop being so inappropriate.”
Yang Chan’er laughed while eating.
Wang Cuiyun was a little embarrassed. “I don’t need a man.”
Xu Lian said, “Our family has just started to get better off; it’s not yet time to buy maids.”
What is a prosperous society?
Wang Cuiyun was puzzled, knowing that Xu Lian didn’t plan to buy maids, so she didn’t say anything more. She believed that it was just a matter of time before they bought maids. She didn’t think that Xu Lian wouldn’t want more women to serve him; no one understood men better than her.
After dinner.
Xu Lian took a small pottery cup and poured the blood from the mine into it, then opened the front door and placed it outside.
The timing of placing the cup was crucial.
If placed too early, someone might steal the cup and the Night Patrol wouldn’t get the blood, it would then break in and drain the family dry.
If placed too late, the Night Patrol would come and go crazy without blood, or if the cup was placed just as the Night Patrol arrived, that would be disastrous.
Therefore, the timing of placing the cup had to be precise, leaving no time for theft and ensuring that the Night Patrol got the blood.
Xu Lian saw that several wealthy neighbors also opened their doors and placed their cups at about the same time, showing good coordination.
The neighbors noticed that someone had moved into the previously vacant house, paused, and nodded to him in greeting.
Xu Lian nodded back and shut the door.
After that, he didn’t go straight back into the room, but waited by the door, listening carefully to prevent anyone from stealing the blood.
Having a bigger house was inconvenient. In the old house on the old street, it was easy to hear if someone was stealing blood, but now the distance from the door to the house was greater, so he couldn’t be careless.
When Xu Lian heard the neighbors closing their doors and the “clack clack clack” sound of the bamboo clappers on the street, he knew that the night patrol was coming and felt relieved. No one would dare to steal blood now.
Wang Cuiyun took one of the main rooms, Li Xiya and Yang Chan’er shared another, and Xu Lian knew where he should stay – he didn’t mind being a bit crowded.
After blowing out the oil lamp, the beautiful night began again.
Just as they were in the midst of it, the purple jade token on the table beside the bed suddenly emitted a purple glow, with the white fox pattern on it looking lifelike.
“What is this?”
Li Xiya, drenched in sweat, was surprised.
Xu Lian also looked at the purple jade token in confusion. After a while, the purple light slowly faded and disappeared into the darkness, and everything returned to normal. “It’s nothing; it’s something from the higher ups.”
Li Xiya didn’t ask any further.
Yang Chan’er didn’t react at all; she was too tired and had fallen asleep… curled up like a little cat in the corner.
The night passed with words.
After this brief interruption, the intense battle resumed.
After nearly an hour, Xu Lian finally fell asleep, satisfied.
As he slept in a daze, he heard a ghostly sigh, making his hair stand on end and his skin crawl. He suddenly woke up.
In the darkness, he saw that Li Xiya and Yang Chan’er hadn’t woken up yet. Could it be that they couldn’t hear it?
Xu Lian held his breath and listened carefully.
He heard the eerie voice again, like a whisper from the abyss: “Come back, don’t leave me.”
Damn it! Xu Lian’s face turned green.
Could there be a ghost in this house?
But after thinking about it carefully, it didn’t make any sense. He had no grudge against Pei Heng, and Pei Heng needed his help, so he wouldn’t give him a haunted house.
In other words, Pei Heng didn’t know that the house was haunted.
Also, Li Xiya, Yang Chan’er, and Wang Cuiyun, who live here, didn’t show any reaction, and the neighbors didn’t seem to have heard any rumors about a ghost.
What does that mean?
Does it mean that only martial artists like him can hear that voice?
“I need to check it out; otherwise, I won’t be able to sleep soundly and it might be dangerous for Sister Xiya and Chan’er.”
Xu Lian’s courage wasn’t great, but as the only man in the family, he had to tough it out and check it out.
He put on his clothes and took a sharp knife in his hand.
After thinking for a moment, he also took the purple jade token, ready to call for help from the Quarry Patrol Inspector… even though he didn’t know if the Quarry Patrol Inspector would come to his rescue, it was at least a psychological comfort.
With a soft creak he opened the door and closed it, preventing anything unclean from sneaking in.
“I’m so lonely now that you’re gone.”
The eerie voice continued to whisper, making Xu Lian’s scalp tingle. Damn it, what kind of ghost is this?
He followed the direction of the sound, moving silently in the dark.
Fortunately, his martial artist’s eyesight was good, so he didn’t have to worry about being attacked in the dark.
As the sound grew closer, he reached the back garden and saw an old well.
The well was round, built of blue stones, full of moss and age.
“What demon or ghost is causing trouble in the well?”
Xu Lian stopped three zhang away from the well, not daring to get too close. He held the sharp knife in his right hand and the purple jade token in his left, ready to fight… and call for help.
The eerie voice from the well suddenly stopped, and there was silence.
Then a cheerful voice came, “You’re back?”
Back your N, you must have mistaken me… Xu Lian’s face was grim. “Are you a human or a ghost?”
The voice in the well said sadly, “It’s been too long, don’t you remember me?”
I remember your mother’s head… Xu Lian cursed inwardly, took a deep breath, and spoke softly, “I am the new resident here.”
