Chapter 3: A Magus
"Experiment #10013, the subject appears to be stable and has taken to the artificially created Magic circuits which was a hassle to create as the only basis for such a thing is the couple of times I saw them in my old reality," I said as I wrote in the first page of a black notebook, that would join the others soon enough.
In front of me was a clear-glass tube that had green liquid inside alongside a bunch of tubes attached to a young-looking humanoid body. They resembled my own in a way except with long hair and they were female instead of male. I of course dressed them in the appropriate attire to cover them up, but well unless they had a mind/soul I didn't look at them like they were human.
Right now they were more like beasts than anything else and even then this one was another in the long line of experimental subjects. This one though I had a good feeling about as the magic circuits were finally taken to, with mana/od being naturally generated in the body.
"So far subject has shown no signs of rejection from the magic circuits recently implanted in it, alongside the fluid currently flowing through their body," I said as I tapped the glass, circling around it and studying it looking for any obvious sign of degeneration. Although I would probably take them out soon and examine their body a bit more closely, to see if anything was amiss.
I continued writing down all relevant data, including any changes to their physical characteristics and their current mana quality. I also made sure to write down notes on the magic circles that went about creating this being in front of me, in case this was a success in the long run. Better to be on the safe side than anything else, as I had done the same thing with both previous failures and kind of successes.
Right now this subject is the best one I had so far, far more than the others in the past two years I have been on this. Honestly, I thought I would've had an easier time in this reality than my old one just based on the stark differences between the two. Although those differences might have been the problem rather than the process itself well kind of.
Like comparing two entirely different pieces of software, for example, my previous world of Type-Moon might've been akin to a PC in regards to the power and how transferable it was. This universe however was more like a laptop, it could be easily used and transferred but it didn't have as much of a kick as other reality's magic systems.
Meaning I had to work harder to make use of the more abundant mana in the air to facilitate the growth process. That and figuring out how to artificially create magic circuits which I was pretty sure I did, not like the ones back home of course as those naturally created are far superior to my own but these would serve their purpose.
For now, though it would serve its purpose but soon enough I think I would need to make contact with the wider area of the supernatural world. More specifically any marketplace that sells magical items/ingredients to people as I was running out of mundane material to use, well more specifically to progress my current research. Sure I could mass produce more homunculus like this one but I would prefer if they had a bit more punch to it.
Meaning I would require more materials to do so, materials more naturally produced in this world that I had no current way of getting my hands on. I know I sensed some kind of disturbance, a kind of ripple in Kyoto but that could be the dimension the various Youkai species under...Yasaka I believe this half of the Youkai popular served were stationed under.
I would rather go for a more traditional magicians market if there were such a thing, I mean there probably were as things like "stray magicians" or whatever was just insulting to humans who didn't want to get caught up in a faction's disputes with another. Meaning they probably made their own little home for themselves to do business as they saw fit.
Well, that dimension or whatever they called it would be a good place to check out first before expanding my search. Best to check the local markets first before traveling all over Japan looking for materials.
Well, right now it was time to take a closer examination of my first successful homunculus. I pressed a few buttons and began emptying the vat into its own separate space. Didn't want to mutate the sewer rats or any other animal with homunculus juices and all that. That alongside the fact it would be used again under the proper circumstances.
The glass tube slowly opened and I separated the tubes connected to the body, slowly taking care not to damage it. Checking its pulse I made sure the body was breathing nor was its heart breathing and luckily it wasn't, which was another reason I preferred these magic circuits over the ones in my previous reality.
They acted a bit differently and more or less collected the mana in the air, covering it into highly usable energy. Something that could be used for a wide variety of purposes without much trouble/effort if needed. Honestly, I was curious about what would happen if I repeated the process with a properly living homunculus.
That and once I dived a bit more into chimeric research I wanted to see if this process could be repeated with literally beast instead of just humans or humanoid beings.
Honestly, now that I thought of it, I wanted to get a sample of both a pure-blooded devil and a reincarnated devil. See what the differences between the two were, and see what would happen if I created a homunculus using that DNA instead of a human.
I could barely contain my curiosity on the subject and felt the urge to go create a mystic code, alongside some high-powered weaponry to kill a stray devil or two. Dissect their body and examine what makes them what they are, what differences there were beyond how they were born, and what made reincarnated devils different from pure-blooded ones.
Oh, I wanted to study it all and create my own monster from it all, to see if perhaps they revealed a path to the philosopher stone. To see if the path lay in another species, to see if humanity alone could not obtain it but needed to look beyond themselves to do so, to reach their own root so to speak.
Anyway, I put what was essentially a slab of meat on an operating table and got a few pieces of surgical tools out. Once I was ready, I began to take the clothes off the homunculus and cut into them but first I examined the outside for any degeneration or rotting. Once it was clear nothing took place, I carefully sliced open their chest taking a careful look inside, writing down anything of note as I did so.
So far it looked fine until I got to the heart and as I ripped it out the thing was black and rotting away. With a huff, I put it in a separate pan to be examined both physically and magically later as I wrote down that subject #10013 was, in fact, a failure.
"Subject appeared to be an initial success, but the heart was, in fact, rotting inside the body, meaning it would not be able to properly produce energy/mana for long, nor would it be a suitable body to transfer over."
Wheeling the body over to a separate area to be more thoroughly examined later I put the notebook down and stared at the five other tubes that held different homuculuses each one unique in their design.
I think at this moment, my utter disregard for these being's possible emotions or bodily care I became a true Magus or was starting down the path of one. I think I was truly going insane, well I technically already was as I had floated through the void twice but now it was starting to show itself in such a way that I had no excuse for the path I was going down in life.
"Well it was bound to happen eventually, well let's get to it subject #10014 lets see if the small tweaks to your own magic circle were what was needed for a perfect homunculus."
