Madness of Regret

Chapter 6: Hunting (2)

Bait chosen. It's the fishes. Or me. Or both.

If I were to be the bait, I would need to lower my hand in the water or cut my hands for blood. Yea, no I don't want any infections nor any fingers missing with them potentially dragging me to the depths of the ocean. Not a pretty sight in the ocean.

So now how do I catch a fish faster than those bastards? First bait. I can't seem to vomit nor do I feel sea sick. So I am all out of vomit. The raft has like 3 and a half vomit spots. One of them is currently being washed away by the waves.

Curse me and my hygiene habits, making me puke in the ocean. Fuck me I have puked in the tens, no twenties. Now I have got only 3 and a half puke bait. And that half is being eroded by the waves.

So to not lose the bait. I grabbed it. Fuck it should have been hard or solid like due to the sun but the water made it runny and slimy. Yuck!

Looking at the puke dripping down my fingers, I flicked my hand instinctively and it flew to the ocean and my face. I regret that I did it.

The ones that dropped in the ocean were near and far and the ones that flew in my face was disgusting so disgusting that I didn't even care about the fishes and cleaned my hands and face with the salt water in the other side. Yea, now my face is gonna lose moisture even faster due to the salt.

Yep I regret it.

But hey I learned something new. The big scavengers fishes went after the big puke bait bits while the smaller fishes were found in the smaller puke baits like some sort of hierarchy. Two of the three dinosaurs followed the big fishes who went after the bigger puke baits while the sole dinosaurs reached a little too close for comfort. Around 6 meters away from my raft. I could even see it excreting out green algae like substance from the gills every few minutes.

Now why is it doing that? I wondered. But hey, I found something interesting. The dinosaurs do separate. Can it be my chance to catch the sole dinosaur?

I observed more. The following dinosaur maintained a gap of 6 or so meters while excreting the algae like stuff. My raft was followed by smaller scavengers fishes with the big ones out of the sight with the two dinosaurs.

I observed patiently for the sightings of the bigger scavengers and the two dinosaurs. It took time and the scavengers came not from the behind but from the side. If the following dinosaur was south and the vomit bait was sent flying in east then the bigger scavenger fishes came from north-east.

Why?

I didn't take much time for the answer. One of the dinosaurs was following behind the shoal of the scavengers fishes almost like herding it.

Now where was the another one? Would you look at that it was swimming fast and approaching the follower dinosaur from the east. If I judge the three fish position the three fishes made an semi circle to circle the fishes like an net to the ones who feed them.

Bloody bastards. Won't even let me fish nicely and giving me all the work to attract the fishes. They are more capitalist than I am.

Situation progress. I have three baits. Three dinosaur behind my ass. A shoal of scavenger fishes following me because of my generous vomit bait I've been letting out for hours. No weapons to hunt said fishes and dinosaur. Sun isn't straight above my head and is slanting to signal that evening approaches. So my bio clock says its around 1 - 2 pm.

Don't know what time it gets dark? But using logic hotter places get dark latter than cold places. So I should have light till 5-6 pm .7 pm if I am being generous. But it's better to do all the hunting before 4 pm. Need all the light I can get to clean the body if I hunted one dinosaur. Don't want a prehistoric megalodon attracted by the smell of blood now would I?

So 3 hours to hunt food otherwise I sleep hungry. What a motivation.

An empty stomach.

Sleeping hungry for a day isn't a problem. I know I can tank few days without eating but water is a must, especially in temperature like these. But I don't see any water sources to drink from so I have to live without drinking till I find a alternative. Maximizing the resource use is the best option I have. And what resource is there? The raft? Yea, no they look like they would fall apart or stop functioning as a whole if I pulled the ropes away. Supplies? Nonexistent. My body? The only resource I have.

So I have to maximize my fat, muscles, water content in my body to stay alive. Fat and muscles could act as energy reserves but many days of hunger would make my muscles and fat loss be to the extreme. A bad choice if I decide to live off of my muscles and fat in the days to come.

Water. My sweat from the T-shirt could be squeezed and drank. My pee. Ughh! I would rather die than drink it. Maybe few more days of drying in the sun could change my mind but no way in hell am I gonna drink my pee now. Even if I die.

Gotta maintain at least some worth of self respect even if I die.

Water only option is sweat at the moment. So, food is the only option. The scavenger fishes are thin, long but not enough meat. So for a hearty meal I gotta hunt them damn dinosaur.

Now let's look at them. Swimming closer than before after the regroup. From 50 meters away to 20 meters away. They are still letting out the algae thingy from their gills even after grouped together. What could it be? A call for other dinosaurs. Am I a feast for them? No wonder.

The dinosaur at first following was one but increased to three in couple of hours.

The bloody first dinosaur called backup. If I left the kill for tomorrow, many more might follow. The scavenger fishes would go away because of no bait. The one thing that isn't making the dinosaurs fish hunt me directly is because of the shoal of fishes following my raft. I can even see them hunting one or two fishes time to time.

So my situation, 3 hours of light in optimal situation max 5 hours, 3 baits, 3 predator lurking around, a shoal of fish that is acting as my first and last line of defense for bait, no weapons, and no bitches. Yea, I see something dark. It's me bloody future.

Now its hunting season.

Hunter 101: The predator appears as prey.

No effort for that. I am already a prey. I just gotta get a single dinosaur in the raft and sucker punch him inside his gills hopefully. And with enough blessings from my almighty hand, I should be able to have fresh dinosaur meat or fish whatever that is.

So plan of action. Fish. Puke-bait distraction. Fish-bait distraction. Run them hand. And my favorite. Dinner time.

Bait no. 1. I took the dry vomit and split it into two and wet it a little in the ocean. The fishes loved every nibble that escaped my fingers. The dinosaurs acted no different. I dipped my hand a little more in the ocean letting more fishes feed on the bait. The dinosaurs stayed still. I readied my other hand and gently placed it into the ocean with a smaller piece of bait.

The fishes flocked to it. I still kept my eyes on those dinosaurs they didn't move. I looked at the fishes feeding of my hand. Some big, some small. I wanted the big one. My dominant right hand let go of the smaller bait and started slowly approaching the fishes eating the bait from my other hand to the south. My right hand at the south matched the currents collecting the uneaten pieces of puke-bait.

Smaller fishes came to my right hand. While bigger fishes stayed munching in the left hand. The loser fish came to my right hand sucking whatever bait they could find but they were smaller I didn't want them. And the water refracts, reflects what I see a little so I gotta make myself completely sure that I have the needed fish in my hand.

Make my hand fully stationary while the fish flock to it. Maybe it was because I was near to my other hand bait with a hand drenched in bait. A fish I could use as bait came close enough. I started to slowly curl up my fingers while the fish kissed my palms.

Slowly. Slowly. My fingers touched the fish scale. It got startled but didn't run away. And then bam! I closed my hand. A fish was caught. A bait for the dinosaur.

Interestingly while the right hand fishes were scared and scattered away the left hand fishes didn't run away. Maybe because I didn't move it too much. Maybe because of something else. So, I might have a chance to catch another fish if I play my cards right.

Since I have curled my hands with bait in the opposite direction of the current. The bait isn't fully gone in a jiffy. But I got very few bits left.

Relax your hand. Feel the fish while you slowly curl your hand and clench it.

Yea one more fish captured. A smaller one but still captured.

I grabbed the two fish by the tail and slammed them on the hard wood of the raft. They stopped responding. Good, no chance for them to just swim away. I smacked their head on the raft once again just to be sure.

So, fish part of plan completed. Now puke-bait distraction.

I have got two fishes one bigger, another smaller. Useful for fish-bait distraction. The shoal of fishes are scattered. I have to rally them into a shoal. Shit I have to use the puke baits or the fish.

If I break the smaller fish and leak its intestine in the water it would attract the fishes and maybe also the dinosaurs. I have seen them hunt down weak fishes. So chances are heavy that they would come for a feast.

So the only applicable option is the puke-bait. 2 baits. Can't use a whole bait to rally them I need them to distract the dinosaurs.

So I carefully scooped out 20-30% of the bait and sprinkled it in the ocean like salt bae. Slowly and very close to the surface. The fishes started gathering again. I could see some bigger fishes swim away but at least I have the majority.

Now for the dinosaurs. Checking them again the first thing that came to mind was Motherfucker. They also rallied three more in their ranks. So now I have six dinosaurs to fight.

My luck just keeps on getting better and better. Fuck me dead. The more time I wait the more dinosaurs I gotta fight.

Calm down.

Remember, Hunter 102: Patience is the key to a good hunt.

So be patient. It's just six dinosaurs that can tear you apart if they get near you, pull you deep in the ocean once they get a hold of you with their jaws full of teeth. They are just fishes and you are the fisherman.

Think what can you use. 1 and a half puke bait. 1 big fish and 1 smaller fish. A shoal of fishes that might run away in few minutes if they aren't provided food. 6 dinosaurs that are hungry for some human meat.

I gotta be patient and use the situation to my advantage. Be a predator to the dinosaur.

The puke-bait distraction and fish-bait distraction plan may not work. So something that involves my situation should be added in the game.

A drastic move.
