Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Diary
In that instant, countless thoughts flashed through Angel's mind.
Had she made a mistake? Was this still Earth? Had some country developed a writing system similar to the one from her world before she crossed over? Or...
Suppressing her inner excitement, Angel picked up the pages from the table and asked, "Mr. Neil, may I ask what these are?"
As she spoke, she realized her voice had become somewhat hoarse.
Old Neil, holding the keys and about to leave the small room, turned back to look at her when he heard Angel's question. Seeing the yellowed pages in her hand, he smiled and replied, "These are copies of Emperor Roselle Gustav's notes, written in his self-created symbols. They were circulated after his death. Some believe it's a complete set of mystical codes hiding endless treasures. However, based on my recent research, I've deciphered the meaning of a small portion of the symbols. According to my speculation, it's likely a diary".
A diary? Emperor Roselle Gustav's diary?
Angel searched her mind for this unfamiliar name and quickly found him in Cole Granger's memories. He was incredibly famous, to the point of being a household name.
Just overthrowing the original rulers of the Intis Kingdom, serving as the consul of the Intis Republic, and then transforming the republic into an empire and crowning himself emperor was enough for Emperor Roselle to go down in history. During this period, he invented the practical steam engine, ushering in the Industrial Revolution and leading the Northern Continent into industrialization. Not to mention, he single-handedly initiated the era of colonization of the Southern Continent, profoundly influencing modern world history.
The numerous inventions in her memory, such as "Tarot cards" and "newspapers," gave Angel a strange sense of familiarity.
Could this multi-talented Emperor of the Intis Empire also be a transmigrator?
As soon as this thought appeared, she immediately found more evidence: various novels and plays from different eras on the original Earth, famous sayings from different countries, and creations and improvements in different fields.
It was simply unreasonable for all these creations and inventions spanning multiple fields to come from a single person.
Combined with these "self-created" symbols that Angel could identify the source of, she was almost certain that Emperor Roselle was also a transmigrator from Earth.
And possibly an Asian.
"Are you trying to decipher these characters?" Old Neil's inquiry brought Angel back from her contemplation.
She casually waved the papers in her hand, shaking her head, and said, "I'm just curious. After all, it's the diary of the great Emperor Roselle. I thought..."
"Thought you might find some secrets?" Old Neil laughed, jingling the keys in his hand. "As one of the most famous figures of this era, his manuscripts have been studied by countless people. Each independent symbol on the manuscript might represent a different meaning. Unfortunately, no one has ever truly deciphered their content".
"You can continue trying here. I'll go get the materials for you."
He didn't seem to think Angel could discern anything from it, so he closed the iron door and left the room.
Angel turned her gaze back to the three pages of the emperor's diary in her hand, trying to find some pattern in these square characters. Unfortunately, apart from further confirming that these were Chinese characters, she made no other progress.
At this moment, she only regretted not being Chinese, or at least not having chosen Chinese as an elective foreign language course.
These diary entries might just be records of mundane daily life, but they could also hide countless knowledge and mysteries, even...
Clues to returning to Earth?
Then she remembered that Emperor Roselle died in his later years from a palace conspiracy-like assassination. Perhaps this senior transmigrator never found a way home until his death.
Gathering her thoughts, Angel began to commit the characters from the three diary pages to memory.
Even if she couldn't decipher them now, she should at least remember them.
————————
"Knock knock—"
A series of knocks awakened Angel from her state of full concentration.
Using the extraordinary memory of a Beyonder, she had already committed all the characters from these three pages of the diary to memory and was in the process of double-checking when Dunn Smith's deep voice came from outside the iron door that Old Neil had left through earlier.
"Old Neil, are you in there?"
The captain has come to the basement too... Didn't he run into Old Neil on the way?
Angel put down the diary and opened the iron door to see Captain Dunn, wearing a top hat and a black trench coat, standing outside.
Seeing it was her who opened the door, Dunn paused for a moment and asked puzzledly, "Where's Old Neil?"
Then he patted the top hat on his head, as if suddenly remembering, and answered his own question, "Oh, he went to get materials for you, right?"
Angel nodded, "Yes, I've already got the bullets. He said the rest of the materials need to be fetched from the Alchemy Room and the Zha... uh... Chanis Gate."
She almost bit her tongue trying to pronounce this awkward word for the first time.
"I just came from the Alchemy Room, so he must be in the Chanis Gate," Dunn's eyes glanced over the bullets on the table, and he quickly made a decision. "Old Neil needs to help Mr. Klein Moretti prepare a potion, so he might not have time to bring you the materials. I'll go get everything for you. Please wait here for a moment."
Why does everyone keep asking me to wait here?
Angel frowned at the thought.
Wait, preparing a potion? Klein Moretti?
She remembered the shy young man who had ridden in the carriage with her to the Nighthawks headquarters. Was he also going to take a potion and become a Beyonder?
In Cole Granger's memory, the potions he took were all prepared by himself and consumed on the spot, but neither Cole nor the current Angel had any experience of watching others take potions from a third-person perspective. Hearing that Old Neil was going to help prepare a potion for someone, she became very interested.
"Could I observe the potion preparation process?" Angel asked casually, trying to sound uninterested, but her jumbled sentences betrayed her true feelings.
Dunn frowned and looked at Angel for a long time. Just as she thought she would be refused, those gray eyes shifted away.
"Come along then," he nodded in agreement and immediately turned to leave the room.
He actually agreed?
Angel quickly put down Emperor Roselle's manuscript and hurried to follow Dunn Smith. They walked through the corridor they had come from earlier, returning to the crossroads.
Just as the two were about to turn into the passage leading to the "Chanis Gate," a series of "tap tap" footsteps could be heard. Old Neil, dressed in a black robe, came walking from the other end of the corridor, carrying a wooden box. Seeing the two people standing at the intersection, he paused as if startled, only relaxing after recognizing who they were.
"Dunn, why did you come down?" Old Neil first greeted Dunn, then without waiting for an answer, handed the wooden box to Angel. "These are the materials you need, all in the box. I took extra of everything except the Starry Crystal. You can check them yourself?"
Angel took the wooden box and opened the lid to look inside.
The small wooden box was divided into several compartments. Two glass bottles probably contained alcohol and etching solution, glowing lizard scales were neatly stacked in a corner, dried screaming grass was bundled tightly filling one compartment, and the Starry Crystal was placed separately in a glass bottle, shimmering with starlight under the lamplight.
She nodded; everything was in order.
Seeing that the two had finished the handover, Dunn finally spoke slowly, "Old Neil, go back to the Chanis Gate once more and fetch a set of 'Seer potion formula and materials. Bring them to the Alchemy Room."
"Diviner?" Old Neil repeated the word.
"Oh, it's for that little fellow Klein, isn't it? I didn't expect him to choose this pathway. I thought he would choose 'Sleepless,' although we already have enough Sleepless here."
Muttering to himself, he turned and headed towards the Chanis Gate.
"Let's go to the Alchemy Room first. Klein is waiting there too," Dunn said to Angel after watching Old Neil leave.
The two left the crossroads again, walking towards the direction of the Saint Selena Cathedral. They walked along the long stone-paved corridor for some distance until they stopped in front of a hidden door that opened in the wall.
Is this the Alchemy Room? But why is it hidden behind a secret door?
Angel followed Dunn into the room, surveying this secret Alchemy Room under the gaslight.
Crucibles, test tubes, flasks, and disorderly tables and chairs – rather than the clean and tidy "proper Alchemy Room" Angel had imagined, this looked more like an enlarged version of a home basement. Klein Moretti, whom they had just bid farewell to upstairs, was standing in front of a table, looking around at the items in the Alchemy Room. Hearing footsteps, he turned and looked at the door in surprise.
"Captain, why did you come back?"
"Old Neil went to get the potion materials. I met Miss Angel Granger on the way and brought her along to... well, observe," Dunn explained briefly, pointing at Angel.
Only then did Klein notice Angel by the door. He tipped his hat in greeting, "Miss Granger, we meet again."
These formalities are so troublesome... Overly polite people are not easy to get along with either.
Angel grumbled inwardly but had to return the greeting.
Seeing that the two had finished greeting each other, Dunn stepped forward, cleared his throat, and said, "This is a good opportunity for you two to get to know each other. This gentleman is Klein Moretti, a local from Tingen, a graduate of Khoy University. He got involved in a Beyonder incident last week and has now joined the Nighthawks."
Klein smiled slightly at Angel, which counted as another greeting.
"This beautiful lady is Angel Granger, from Sivas County. She recently came to Tingen City and, also due to involvement in a Beyonder incident, chose to become one of us."
Angel extended her right hand towards Klein, who was startled for a moment before hurriedly raising his right hand to shake hers.
"Pleased to meet you, Mr. Moretti."
"Likewise, Miss... Granger."
"Oh, a little social gathering, how could I miss it?" A deep yet lively voice came from behind Angel. She turned to see Old Neil holding a silver box in one hand while taking off his round-brimmed felt hat with the other, pressing it to his chest and giving a slight bow.
"This witty old gentleman, whom everyone calls Old Neil, can also be referred to as the manager of the Nighthawks' warehouse, a seeker of mystical knowledge, a peeper in the darkness."
He raised the box in his hand with an exaggerated gesture.
"I present to the ladies and gentlemen, the 'Seer potion."
For a moment, the Alchemy Room fell silent.
