Chapter 67: 67. Crescent Island - Vumala's Plan
Deep within the eerie swamp, the air thick with moisture and the faint calls of unseen creatures, Vumala's towering figure loomed. His dark fur gleamed like slick oil, and his four massive arms were folded across his chest, each movement deliberate and slow. The ancient spirit's crimson eyes burned with malevolent intensity, and his long, bushy tail swayed slowly behind him. He hovered just above the marshy ground, his presence commanding and filled with an oppressive dread. The ancient aura surrounding him was palpable, as if the very swamp feared his existence.
Before him stood General Tamutae, looking much smaller in comparison to the massive spirit. Tamutae's demeanor was a mixture of reverence and grim determination. His body was scarred from countless battles, but here, in front of Vumala, those scars meant nothing. He bowed slightly, showing respect to the spirit who had granted him the power he now wielded.
Vumala's deep voice, a low growl that rumbled like distant thunder, broke the silence. "Your part is nearly complete, General," he said, his crimson eyes narrowing as he gazed down at Tamutae. "The prince and the Avatar are within reach. Everything we've worked for is about to come to fruition."
Tamutae bowed lower, his voice humble and filled with gratitude. "It has been an honor, Great Spirit. My loyalty to you is unshakable. The prince and the Avatar—both will soon be under your control."
Vumala's lips twisted into a dark smile, the glow in his eyes growing brighter. "Good. Once they are in my grasp, the world will finally understand true power. I will crush everything in my way. The spirits themselves will tremble before me."
Tamutae raised his head, his eyes filled with determination. "I will ensure nothing stands in the way of your victory. My strength is yours to command, Vumala."
Vumala nodded in satisfaction. "Go. Prepare yourself for what's to come. The final battle will be upon us soon, and you will have a part to play."
With a respectful bow, Tamutae turned and vanished into the fog of the swamp, leaving Vumala alone. The spirit's crimson eyes gleamed in the dim light, the ominous energy radiating from him only growing stronger.

Meanwhile, aboard the Sea Serpent, the Tsu Pirates' flagship, Aang stood on the deck, the weight of his decision pressing heavily on his mind. He turned to face Captain Tsu, his brow furrowed with frustration.
"I need to find Zuko," Aang insisted, his voice filled with urgency. "He's the only one who knows how to stop the war. I have to help him."
Tsu, arms crossed over his chest, looked unimpressed. His sharp eyes reflected skepticism. "Zuko is Fire Nation, Avatar. He's no ally of ours. Even if he's alive, he's likely betrayed us all."
Aang's frustration boiled over, and the desperation in his heart pushed him past his breaking point. His body surged with energy as he entered the Avatar State. His eyes and tattoos glowed white, radiating the raw power of all his past lives. The water surrounding the ship responded to his emotions, swelling in powerful waves.
With a swift motion, Aang summoned a torrent of water, breaking free from the ice that encased him and sending a massive wave crashing onto the deck. The wave struck Captain Tsu, throwing him from the ship with incredible force. Aang propelled himself off the deck, riding the same wave of water, speeding toward the beach with renewed focus.
Tsu, recovering quickly from the impact, rose from the water with a glare of defiance. His voice rang out over the wind. "Avatar! Don't test me!"
But Aang, still in the Avatar State, floated above him, his eyes glowing as the voices of countless past Avatars spoke in unison. "You cannot defeat me. Not even a thousand of you could stand against the Avatar!"
Yet as Aang spoke, something inside him wavered. The glow of his eyes flickered, and a sharp pain shot through his head. He clutched his temples, letting out a cry of pain as the white glow of the Avatar State shifted. Slowly, the light began to turn red, an unnatural and ominous hue.
Aang staggered, his breath coming in short gasps as he stared down at his own hands. The red light spread through his body, tainting the purity of his energy. The voices inside him faltered, their unity disrupted by the corruption.
From the ship, Katara's worried voice reached him. "Aang! Are you okay?"
Even Tsu's earlier anger had faded, replaced by concern. "Avatar! Answer me!"
But Aang didn't respond. His gaze was drawn southward, where he could feel a powerful disturbance. In the distance, on the southern beach, flashes of fire and the earth-shaking rumbles of a battle echoed through the night. Without hesitation, Aang propelled himself toward the source of the chaos, moving with blinding speed across the sand.
---
Zuko stood on the desolate battlefield, his body trembling from exhaustion. The ground around him was scorched and broken, filled with deep fissures and rivers of molten lava that cut through the earth like scars. Every breath was painful, and every muscle in his body screamed for rest. He had won the battle against Tamutae, but it had nearly cost him everything.
The distant sound of someone approaching drew his attention, and as he looked up, he saw Aang descending toward him. Relief washed over Zuko for a brief moment—Aang had come. Perhaps there was still hope. But that hope quickly faded as Zuko noticed the red glow in Aang's eyes and tattoos. It wasn't the familiar light of the Avatar State. This was something else. Something wrong.
"Aang…" Zuko's voice was weak, but there was still a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "You're here…"
But as Aang touched down in front of him, Zuko's instincts screamed at him to be cautious. This wasn't Aang—not the Aang he knew. The dark red glow in the Avatar's eyes was unsettling, and Zuko forced himself to stand, despite his body's protests.
Aang—or rather, the being controlling him—let out a dark, maniacal laugh that echoed across the battlefield. "Oh, Victor," the voice said mockingly. "You finally understand, don't you? I've been guiding you all along."
Zuko's heart skipped a beat. "What… what are you talking about? Who are you?"
Aang's face twisted into a sinister grin as the voice continued. "You don't recognize me? I am Vumala, and I brought you into this world. I've been watching, guiding, ensuring that everything would lead to this moment."
Zuko's mind reeled with shock. "Vumala… You've been controlling Aang this whole time."
Vumala's laughter grew louder, the red glow of his eyes intensifying. "Yes, and it's thanks to you that I've been able to do this. A piece of my energy lives within you, Victor. That's how I've been able to corrupt the Avatar's light, turning it into something much more… powerful."
Zuko's fists clenched, despite the fatigue threatening to overwhelm him. "You used me… to get to the Avatar."
Vumala, still controlling Aang's body, took a step closer, his aura growing darker. "Indeed. You played your part perfectly. And now, with the light of Raava corrupted, nothing can stop me from achieving my true goal."
Zuko's body moved on instinct, fire flickering around his hands as he prepared for a final attack. "I won't let you win, Vumala."
With a speed that defied logic, Vumala lunged forward, closing the distance between them in an instant. Zuko barely had time to react as Vumala's hand shot out, gripping his throat and lifting him off the ground effortlessly. Zuko struggled, but his energy was nearly gone, and Vumala's grip was unyielding.
"I brought you into this world," Vumala sneered, tightening his grip. "And now, I'll take you out."
With a flick of his wrist, Vumala hurled Zuko to the ground with a bone-crushing impact. The earth cracked beneath him, and Zuko lay there, gasping for breath, unable to move.
Vumala stood over him, a dark smile on his face as he raised his hand. The sky above crackled with energy as a bolt of lightning formed at his fingertips. "Goodbye, Victor."
But before he could strike, the red glow in Aang's eyes began to flicker once more. The white light of Raava fought back, piercing through the corruption. Vumala let out a frustrated snarl, his control slipping as the Avatar State reasserted itself. With a final roar of anger, Vumala was forced out, and Aang collapsed to his knees, the red glow fading entirely.
"The damage is done little Raava," his voice echoed to nothing.
"Aang…" Zuko's voice was barely more than a whisper, his body trembling from the pain.
Aang's eyes widened as he saw Zuko lying on the ground, his body scorched and broken. "Zuko!" Aang rushed to his side, guilt and horror filling his heart. "I'm so sorry… I didn't—"
Zuko smiled faintly, his breath coming in short gasps. "It's alright… I had a second chance. That's more than most get."
"Aang…" Zuko whispered, his eyes slowly closing.
Aang knelt beside Zuko, his hands trembling as he reached out to the prince's scorched body. His mind was racing, overwhelmed with guilt, pain, and the weight of his recent actions. The glow of Raava's light had only just returned to him, but the damage Vumala had done—to both him and Zuko—was unmistakable.
"Zuko, please," Aang pleaded, his voice thick with emotion. "You can't die. I need you. We need you to end this war." He pressed his hands down, trying to channel the last bit of his energy to heal Zuko, but it was clear that Zuko's condition was far beyond what Aang could fix.
Zuko's eyes, half-closed and fading, fluttered as he gave a weak smile. His breath was shallow, every word coming out in painful gasps. "You're stronger than you think, Aang. I wish… I could help you more."
Aang's eyes filled with unshed tears as he shook his head, refusing to accept what was happening. "No, Zuko. You can help me. You're supposed to be my firebending teacher! We were supposed to end the war together!"
Zuko's gaze softened, the hint of a sad smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "I'm… sorry. It looks like I won't be able to do that." He paused, struggling to breathe, before continuing, his voice growing even weaker. "But… there's still hope. Jeong Jeong… my uncle, Iroh… they can teach you firebending. You'll need them… when the time comes."
Aang wiped at his eyes, his heart breaking. "But you were supposed to help me! How can I do this without you?"
Zuko's hand twitched slightly, as if trying to reach for Aang, though the effort seemed to take everything he had left. "You're the Avatar, Aang. You'll find a way. There's still a chance—two, actually. The solar eclipse… It's coming. Firebenders lose their bending during the eclipse. That's… the time to strike."
Aang's eyes widened in surprise. "The solar eclipse?"
Zuko coughed weakly, his voice barely a whisper. "Yes… but if that fails, there's Sozin's Comet. When the comet returns… Firebenders will be at their strongest. You have to stop the Fire Lord before then." He paused again, fighting through the pain. "Don't trust the Dai Li in Ba Sing Se… They serve themselves, not the Earth King."
Aang nodded, his heart heavy with every word. "I'll remember. I'll do everything I can, Zuko."
Zuko's breathing grew more labored, and his body trembled with the effort of staying conscious. His eyes, once filled with fire and determination, were now dimming rapidly. "I wish… I could've seen the end of the war. I wish I could've helped bring peace." He looked at Aang one last time, his eyes locking onto the Avatar's. "Beware… Azula… my sister is more dangerous than my father. Tell her our mother is still alive. My father knows this. That might be your only chance to defeat her."
Aang swallowed hard, nodding as he tried to hold back his tears. "I will. I promise."
Zuko's breath hitched, his voice now just a faint whisper. "Thank you… for believing in me."
And with that, Zuko's body went still. His chest no longer rose and fell, and the faint light in his eyes faded completely. The prince of the Fire Nation, who had fought so hard for his redemption, was gone.
Aang sat there, staring at Zuko's lifeless form, unable to process the weight of what had just happened. The prince—his friend—was dead. The world felt still, the devastation of the battlefield surrounding them like a graveyard. The war had claimed another life, and despite all of Aang's power, he had been unable to save him.
But as Aang sat there, his grief threatening to overwhelm him, a flicker of determination sparked in his heart. Zuko's final words rang in his mind. The war wasn't over, and there was still hope. Aang had to finish what Zuko had started. He had to bring balance back to the world.
Slowly, Aang rose to his feet, his fists clenching at his sides. The pain and sorrow were still there, but they fueled his resolve now. He would honor Zuko's sacrifice by ending the war once and for all.
"I won't let your death be in vain, Zuko," Aang whispered, his voice filled with quiet determination. "I'll end this war. I'll restore balance to the world."
He took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the task ahead. With Zuko's parting words and the knowledge he'd given, Aang knew what needed to be done. The path was clearer now, and though it would be fraught with danger, he would follow it to the end.
As he looked out over the battlefield, the destruction that surrounded him, Aang's resolve hardened. He would face the Fire Lord, and he would bring peace back to the world.
