Lord of Fire

Chapter 65: 65. Crescent Island - Aang’s Plea

The air between Zuko and Tsu was thick with tension, the heat from Zuko's flames swirling and mingling with the salty sea breeze. The two warriors stood amidst the chaos of the deck, the Fire Nation soldiers still locked in desperate battle with the pirates, but their world seemed to narrow, focusing only on the impending clash. Tsu's expression remained calm, though his eyes betrayed a fierce intensity. Zuko, his mind still clouded by the betrayal, clenched his fists, blue flames flickering around his hands, burning hotter than anything the Fire Nation had ever seen.

Tsu raised his hands slowly, his fingers twitching with anticipation. Water from the sea surged upward, responding to his command. Tendrils of water twisted and coiled in midair, shimmering in the moonlight like serpents ready to strike. Zuko's eyes narrowed, his flames flaring in response. This would not be an easy battle—Tsu was the most powerful waterbender since Avatar Kuruk, and his control over the element was unparalleled. But Zuko was no ordinary firebender. The blue flames that burned within him were a testament to his mastery, hotter and more destructive than the red fire of his kin.

Without warning, Tsu struck first. The water serpents lashed out toward Zuko, moving with lightning speed, but Zuko was quicker. He leaped back, thrusting his hands forward and sending a torrent of blue flames crashing into the water. Steam erupted where the elements collided, the hiss of vapor loud enough to momentarily drown out the battle around them.

Tsu grinned. "Impressive," he muttered. "But you're not the only one who's mastered their element."

With a swift motion, Tsu summoned a massive wave from the sea, crashing it down onto the deck with enough force to send Zuko sliding backward. Zuko gritted his teeth and steadied himself, planting his feet and igniting a ring of blue fire around him, the heat pushing the water away. He thrust his fists forward, sending twin jets of flame directly at Tsu.

Tsu countered with a wall of water, the flames hissing out as they struck the barrier. But Zuko was relentless. He followed up with a burst of fire from his feet, launching himself high into the air before bringing down a rain of fireballs, each one burning with the intensity of the sun.

The deck erupted into flames, but Tsu remained unshaken. He spread his arms wide, pulling more water from the ocean and sending it swirling into a vortex around him. The water doused the flames, and Tsu directed it upward, catching Zuko mid-flight in a watery grip. Zuko struggled, flames bursting from his hands and feet as he fought to free himself. The heat of his flames began to boil the water, steam rising from the vortex as Zuko pushed his firebending to the limit.

With a furious roar, Zuko broke free, landing on the deck with a thud. His eyes blazed with determination, his blue flames roaring to life once more. Tsu, undeterred, stepped forward, raising his hands as a massive column of water shot into the sky, forming a towering wave that loomed over the Fire Nation flagship.

Zuko's eyes widened. The wave was enormous, its shadow casting a dark pall over the ship. He had to act fast. He thrust his hands forward, summoning a jet of blue flame so intense that it lit up the night like a second sun. The fire slammed into the wave, but Tsu's mastery of waterbending was absolute. The wave did not falter. It crashed down onto the ship, the force of it splitting the deck in half and sending soldiers and pirates alike tumbling into the sea.

The ship shuddered under the impact, its masts splintering as the wave tore through the hull. Zuko staggered, struggling to keep his footing as the deck tilted beneath him. But there was no time to think—the fight wasn't over. Tsu was already moving, leaping across the broken deck with the grace of a predator. He struck out with a whip of water, aiming for Zuko's legs.

Zuko barely managed to dodge, rolling to the side and unleashing a blast of fire as he did. The flames scorched the wood of the ship, but Tsu avoided the attack, twisting the water around him to form a protective shield. The two continued to clash, their battle growing fiercer with every passing moment.

Tsu moved like water itself—fluid, unpredictable, and unstoppable. He sent torrents of water crashing into Zuko, each strike more powerful than the last. Zuko countered with his blue flames, the intense heat evaporating the water before it could reach him. But it was a losing battle. The ship was falling apart around them, and Tsu's control over the ocean was too great. He was drawing more and more water from the sea, turning the entire battlefield into his domain.

With a final surge of power, Tsu summoned a tidal wave that dwarfed anything he had conjured before. The wave loomed over the Fire Nation fleet, casting a shadow so vast it seemed to blot out the moon. Zuko knew there was no stopping it. He had one chance.

He planted his feet, his entire body engulfed in blue flames. He reached deep within himself, summoning every ounce of firebending power he possessed. The air around him shimmered with heat, and the very deck beneath his feet began to burn. With a deafening roar, Zuko unleashed a blast of fire so intense that it turned the night into day. The blue flames shot toward the wave, colliding with it in a violent explosion of steam and heat.

For a moment, it seemed as though Zuko's fire would win. The wave wavered, steam billowing into the sky as the two forces struggled for dominance. But Tsu's waterbending was too strong. The wave crashed down, obliterating the Fire Nation fleet in a single, devastating strike.

The ships splintered and sank beneath the waves, their crews thrown into the sea. The force of the impact sent Zuko tumbling into the water, his blue flames extinguished as he hit the icy ocean. The pirates fared no better—many were swept overboard, their ships shattered by the tidal wave.

For a moment, everything was silent. The sea was littered with debris, the remains of the once-proud Fire Nation fleet scattered across the water. But Zuko was not finished yet. He broke the surface, gasping for air, his eyes burning with determination. He swam toward the shore, his limbs heavy but his resolve unbroken.

Tsu, too, had survived the onslaught. He clambered aboard the remains of his flagship, his body battered but his spirit unyielding. The battle had taken its toll on him, but he was not defeated. His crew, those who had survived, managed to regroup, pulling themselves from the wreckage and making their way back to the ship.

As Tsu hauled himself onto the deck, he was met by his Earthbender allies, who had been waiting on the deck of the only remaining earth Kingdom ship. Among them were Aang and Katara, unconscious but unharmed. The Earthbenders had successfully retrieved them from the Fire Nation during the chaos of the battle.

Tsu staggered over to them, his body aching from the fight. He looked down at Aang, the boy who was meant to bring balance to the world. The boy who might be the key to ending the Fire Nation's tyranny once and for all.

As Tsu caught his breath, Aang stirred. His eyes fluttered open, taking in the destruction around him—the sinking ships, the bodies washed ashore, the smoldering wreckage of the battle. His expression was one of confusion and fear, but also determination.

The Avatar had awakened, and the war was far from over.

Aang stumbled to his feet, the weight of the chaos around him settling heavily on his shoulders. The sight of shattered ships, the bodies of Fire Nation soldiers and pirates alike washed up on the shore—it all felt like too much. His heart pounded in his chest, anger and confusion bubbling inside him. All this destruction, all this suffering… for him? He clenched his fists, his body trembling as he tried to process the carnage. The waves crashed against the debris, the wind howling like a mournful spirit. Aang's breath hitched as he looked around at the devastation, and then his eyes landed on Katara, Sokka, and the others.

Katara recently just awakened herself, rushed to his side, her face filled with concern. "Aang, are you alright?" she asked softly, her hand reaching out to steady him.

Aang looked at her, his mind still reeling. "Katara... all of this… it's because of me, isn't it? They're fighting—dying—because of me."

Before Katara could respond, Sokka joined them, his face hardened. "It's not your fault, Aang. The Fire Nation is the one causing all this destruction. It's them, not you."

Aang shook his head, his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of Zuko. He knew the prince had been caught in the middle of the battle, and despite their complicated past, he needed to know. "What about Zuko? Is he still alive?"

Sokka scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "Who cares? We're better off without him, Aang. He's Fire Nation. He betrayed us before, and he'll do it again."

Jet, standing nearby, nodded in agreement. "He's bad news, kid. I can't believe you're still worried about him after everything."

But Aang couldn't shake the feeling in his gut. Non of the others knew it but Zuko had confessed to him about who he really was. The real Zuko had died and his body was taken over by a man named Victor. He turned to face them, his voice resolute. "You don't understand. Zuko's the only one who knows how to end this war. He's the key."

Sokka frowned, his disbelief evident. "Come on, Aang. You really think the Fire Nation prince, of all people, is going to help us? After everything he's done? You can't trust him."

Aang's frustration grew, his voice rising. "I know what he said! I know it sounds crazy, but he's the only one who can help me stop this war. I have to find him."

Katara stepped forward, her brow furrowed in concern. "Aang, I don't know. Zuko has been... difficult, to say the least. Are you sure about this?"

Before Aang could answer, Tsu approached, his expression dark and unreadable. The pirate captain had been observing the conversation, his patience thinning. "Forget about Zuko, Avatar," Tsu said, his voice firm. "The prince is lost to the sea. You're wasting your time."

Aang's eyes snapped to Tsu, his frustration reaching its peak. "No! I need to find him. Zuko's not lost, and I'm not giving up on him!"

Tsu narrowed his eyes, the air around them growing tense. "You're a fool if you think that boy will help you. He's Fire Nation, just like the rest of them. You're better off without him."

Aang's heart pounded in his chest as he stepped closer to Tsu, his body trembling with anger. "You don't know him like I do. I know the real Zuko, and I won't let you stand in my way."

Tsu's lips curled into a snarl. "I won't let you waste your potential chasing after a lost cause. You have bigger things to worry about, Avatar."

The tension between the two was palpable, the air thick with the promise of violence. Aang's hands clenched into fists, his frustration boiling over. "You don't understand," Aang growled. "Zuko can help end this war!"

Tsu's patience snapped. With a flick of his hand, a torrent of water surged from the sea, swirling around him like a protective barrier. "Then you leave me no choice," he said coldly, his eyes glinting with determination.

Before Aang could react, Tsu lashed out, the water coiling like a serpent and striking toward the young Avatar. Aang dodged, leaping into the air and countering with a gust of wind that sent sand and water flying. The fight had begun.

Tsu moved with the fluid grace of a master waterbender, his control over the ocean absolute. Waves rose and fell at his command, striking out at Aang with deadly precision. Aang dodged and weaved, using his airbending to stay one step ahead, but Tsu was relentless. He summoned tendrils of water that lashed out like whips, forcing Aang to backpedal as he tried to find an opening.

Aang retaliated with blasts of air, the force of his strikes sending Tsu sliding back across the sand. But the pirate captain was unfazed. He thrust his hands forward, sending a massive wave crashing toward Aang. The Avatar leaped high into the air, avoiding the water, but Tsu was already moving, bending the wave into an arc and sending it crashing down from above.

Aang barely managed to create a shield of air in time, the water slamming into him with enough force to send him tumbling across the shore. He groaned as he struggled to his feet, his body aching from the impact. Tsu was already on him, another torrent of water rushing forward. Aang had to think quickly. He spun on his heel, using the wind to propel himself toward Tsu at blinding speed.

The two clashed again, Aang's staff swinging toward Tsu's head. Tsu blocked with a wall of water, the force of the impact sending ripples through the air. Aang pushed forward, using his airbending to augment his strikes, but Tsu's defenses were impeccable. Every attack Aang made was countered by Tsu's mastery of waterbending.

Tsu growled in frustration, raising his arms and pulling water from the sea, forming a massive wall that loomed over Aang. The wave crashed down, but Aang was ready. With a powerful gust of wind, he deflected the water, sending it spiraling away in a cyclone. But Tsu was relentless. He thrust his hands forward, the water following his command as he surrounded Aang in a swirling vortex.

Aang's eyes widened in shock as the water closed in around him, freezing into solid ice in an instant. He was trapped, encased in a block of ice that immobilized him completely. Tsu stepped forward, his expression grim as he stared down at the frozen Avatar.

"Forget about Zuko, Avatar," Tsu said coldly. "He's not your salvation. He's only going to lead you to more suffering."

But inside the ice, Aang's mind raced. He couldn't give up on Zuko. He needed him to end the war. The Fire Nation would never fall without him, and Aang wasn't ready to face that truth. His heart pounded in his chest, the frustration, the anger, the guilt—all of it boiled over, and he could feel the deep, ancient power within him stir.

His eyes began to glow, a bright white light piercing through the ice. His tattoos illuminated, the ancient power of the Avatar awakening within him. The ice around him began to crack, thin fissures spreading across its surface.

Tsu's eyes widened in shock as he stepped back, realizing what was happening. "No…" he muttered under his breath, but it was too late.

The Avatar State had been triggered.

Aang's eyes and tattoos blazed with power, his voice calm yet filled with ancient authority. "I need Zuko," he said, his voice echoing with the power of a thousand past lives.

The ice shattered into a thousand pieces as the full force of the Avatar State was unleashed.

And the world held its breath.
