Lord of Deception

Chapter 96: Chapter 96: The First Move

The night stretched over the Imperial City like a suffocating shroud. Inside Kael Arden's estate, the candlelight flickered across his sharp features as he studied the map of the empire laid before him. Every faction, every noble house, every military stronghold—pieces on a board waiting to be moved.

His meeting with Emperor Castiel had confirmed one thing: the man saw him as both a threat and a potential tool. The moment Kael became more trouble than he was worth, the Emperor would strike.

But Kael had no intention of waiting for that moment.

Tonight, he would make his move.

A knock echoed through the silent halls.

Kael didn't look up from his map as Ilyssia, his elven shadow and most trusted strategist, entered. She carried herself with the silent grace of her kin, her piercing silver eyes betraying nothing—but Kael knew her well enough to read the tension in her movements.

"Someone tried to slip past our defenses," she said, placing a black envelope on his desk. "They were intercepted before they could reach you."

Kael picked up the envelope, examining the unmarked seal. No insignia, no wax—only those with something to hide used such measures.

"Who was the messenger?"

Ilyssia's lips curved slightly. "Dead."

Kael smirked. Efficient, as always.

Breaking the seal, he unfolded the parchment inside.

A single line, written in elegant, blood-red ink.

'The caged bird sings at dawn. Will you listen?'

Kael's eyes darkened. A hidden message, a warning—or an invitation?

His mind moved swiftly. If this was a trap, it was a bold one. If it was genuine… someone in the Empire had just declared their willingness to betray Castiel.

He set the letter aside and met Ilyssia's gaze. "I want every known rebel faction watched. If someone thinks they can reach out to me, they must already believe I can be swayed."

She nodded. "And if they're right?"

Kael leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled. "Then we'll see just how desperate they are."

Kael moved through the underbelly of the city with practiced ease. Gone was the regal duke, replaced by a figure clad in a simple dark cloak, his presence unnoticed by the commoners who filled the winding alleys.

The meeting point was an abandoned temple on the outskirts of the noble district—once a place of worship, now nothing but crumbling stone and fading history.

He stepped inside, his boots echoing against the cold floor.

Then he saw her.

A woman stood before the altar, wrapped in a deep red cloak, her golden hair cascading over her shoulders like a waterfall of light. Even with her face partially concealed, Kael could recognize power when he saw it.

And he had seen this woman before.

Princess Seraphina Valerius.

The Emperor's only daughter.

The Empire's caged bird.

She turned slowly, her emerald eyes locking onto his. "So, you came."

Kael smiled faintly. "I do enjoy an invitation with flair."

Seraphina stepped closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't have much time. If my father discovers this meeting, I will not live to see tomorrow."

Kael observed her carefully. The princess was no fool. If she had risked everything to reach out to him, she had already committed to treason.

"Then speak," he said. "Why betray your own blood?"

Her jaw tightened. "Because my father is a tyrant. The people suffer, the nobles scheme, and the empire is rotting from the inside out. You know this better than anyone."

Kael tilted his head. "And what do you want from me?"

Seraphina exhaled slowly. "To end him."

A bold request. A dangerous one.

Kael chuckled, stepping closer. "And what do you offer in return?"

She met his gaze without flinching. "The loyalty of the Imperial Army's Eastern Division. My father may rule, but the soldiers follow me. If you move against him… they will stand by your side."

Kael's mind raced. An entire section of the Empire's military, pledged to him? This was not a mere rebellion. This was the beginning of war.

And the most dangerous part?

He had no doubt the Emperor already suspected his daughter's betrayal.

Which meant this game had just become a death match.

Returning to his estate, Kael poured himself a glass of wine and considered his options.

If he sided with Seraphina, he would be committing to an all-out coup against Castiel.

If he refused, she might seek another ally—or worse, be captured and used against him.

He turned as Ilyssia entered.

"You're back early," she noted.

Kael took a slow sip before answering. "The game has changed."

He glanced toward the flickering candlelight, eyes cold and calculating.

"I need to decide whether to kill an Emperor… or create one."

To be continued.....
