Chapter 37: Chapter 37: The Empress Moves Her Piece
The night was calm, yet the Imperial Palace never truly slept. Beneath the grandeur of its golden domes and silk-draped corridors, unseen battles were waged—whispers carried on the wind, alliances forged in the dark, and power shifted without a single blade drawn.
Kael had returned from the western provinces victorious. The rebellion had been quelled without bloodshed, and his influence in the court had grown significantly. Yet, he knew that power was a delicate thing—it invited attention, envy, and, most dangerously, intrigue.
That night, as he reviewed reports in his private chambers, a knock echoed against the heavy oak doors.
"Enter," he said without looking up.
The scent of rare perfume reached him first—exotic, deep, laced with something almost intoxicating. Kael finally lifted his gaze as Empress Selene stepped into his quarters, her golden eyes gleaming in the dim candlelight.
A Queen in Chains
She was dressed far too elegantly for a casual visit. A flowing black and silver gown clung to her curves, embroidered with patterns of dragons. A subtle reminder of her lineage, her power. Yet, no matter how regal she appeared, Kael knew the truth.
She was a queen with no real power. The Emperor held the scepter, the court dictated her place, and the chains of tradition bound her in silence.
And now, she was here.
To him, that meant only one thing—she was ready to make her move.
"You must be tired from your journey, Duke Kael," she said, her voice smooth as silk.
Kael set his goblet aside. "Your Majesty does not visit chambers without reason. To what do I owe this honor?"
Selene chuckled, stepping closer. "You are direct. That is good. Men in court waste words like merchants waste coin."
She stopped before his desk, her golden gaze studying him. "I have been watching you, Kael. You move the court like a chessboard, yet you never make unnecessary sacrifices."
"I dislike waste," he replied.
"Even so, you play carefully. You understand patience, restraint." She leaned in slightly. "That is why I find you… intriguing."
Kael raised an eyebrow. "Intriguing?"
"Do not feign ignorance," she said with a knowing smirk. "You have power, yet you do not seize the throne. You have loyalty, yet you do not demand it. You are dangerous because you do not act recklessly, unlike the fools in court who believe they hold influence."
Kael tilted his head slightly. "And what is it you seek, Your Majesty?"
Selene's expression darkened. "Freedom."
A Dangerous Proposition
She traced a finger along the polished wood of his desk. "The Emperor is growing weaker. The court does not respect him as they once did. Soon, factions will move to claim power. I refuse to remain a pawn in their games."
Kael observed her carefully.
She was smart. She understood the tides of power. And more importantly, she was willing to act.
"And what role do I play in this?" he asked.
Selene smiled. "That depends on you. I could align myself with any noble, but only you have proven capable of wielding power without being consumed by it."
She stepped closer, resting a hand on his desk, eyes locked onto his.
"You have ambitions, Kael. So do I. Perhaps it is time we help each other."
Kael remained silent for a moment, considering. Aligning with the Empress was a double-edged sword. She was valuable, yes—but she was also a target. Anyone who sided with her would be seen as a direct threat to the Emperor.
And yet, Kael knew this was inevitable. Power called to power.
"You want the throne?" he finally asked.
Selene's lips curled into a smirk. "I want to rule. Whether from the throne or the shadows, I do not care. But I will not be a prisoner any longer."
Kael leaned back in his chair. "A tempting offer."
"Then consider it carefully," she said, turning toward the door. "The game is already in motion, Kael. Choose your side before it is too late."
She left, her perfume lingering in the air.
Kael sat in silence for a long moment.
Then, slowly, he smiled.
The Empress had moved her piece.
Now, it was his turn.
