Lord of Deception

Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Queen’s Gambit

A cold silence blanketed the grand hall. The nobles and officials stood frozen, their eyes shifting between two figures standing at the heart of the storm.

Kael Ardyn, his golden eyes gleaming with amusement, stood at ease, exuding a confidence that rattled the highest echelons of the empire. Before him, draped in regal splendor, was Queen Lysara von Eldoria, the most powerful woman in the empire, second only to the absent Emperor himself.

The tension in the air was palpable. The hall was filled with armed soldiers, led by General Castian, a man known for his unwavering loyalty to the empire. Yet, Kael could already see the cracks in their resolve. They weren't here because they believed in his arrest.

They were here because they had been ordered to be.

And in the empire, orders could change.

Kael's smirk widened.

"The Queen speaks of order," he said, his voice smooth, unfazed by the swords and spears pointed at him. "Yet here we are, standing on the precipice of something far more… unpredictable."

Lysara took slow, deliberate steps forward, her violet eyes locked onto Kael's. A predator meeting another predator.

"You mistake necessity for disruption," she said, her voice calm but sharp. "This empire is built on control, not chaos."

Kael let out a small chuckle. "Control?" His voice carried an edge of mockery. "Your empire is rotting under the weight of its own cowardice. The Emperor is silent, your generals hesitate, and your so-called loyalists are already reconsidering their allegiances."

His gaze flickered toward Castian, who stiffened. The doubt was creeping into his eyes. He wasn't the only one. The murmurs in the crowd confirmed Kael's words—the empire was no longer as stable as it once seemed.

Perfect.

Lysara stopped just a few feet away from Kael. The air between them felt charged—not just with tension, but with something deeper. A dangerous undercurrent neither of them had acknowledged yet.

"If you had the power to seize the throne," she said, tilting her head slightly, "you would have done so already."

A test.

Kael smiled. "Who says I haven't already?"

Gasps rippled through the hall. The nobles tensed, awaiting the inevitable clash. But Lysara…

Lysara laughed.

A soft, knowing sound that sent shivers through the court.

And just like that, Kael knew.

She wasn't here to fight him.

She was here to see if he was worthy.

A Queen's Proposition

Lysara turned slightly, addressing the court.

"The Empire cannot afford weakness. And yet, we are gathered here today because of fear." She let her gaze sweep across the nobles and soldiers, making sure they felt the weight of her words. "Fear of a man who has done nothing but strengthen this realm."

Kael's smirk deepened. She was speaking in his favor now? This was getting interesting.

Lysara's piercing violet eyes returned to him. There was something else in them now. A spark of intrigue. A recognition.

"A man who has… potential."

Whispers spread like wildfire. Even Castian's soldiers exchanged uncertain glances.

Kael raised an eyebrow. "So you're not here to oppose me?"

Lysara took another step closer. The scent of nightshade and something intoxicatingly regal filled Kael's senses. When she spoke next, it was low enough for only him to hear.

"I'm here to decide if you are worth standing beside."

Kael felt his pulse quicken—not from fear, but from intrigue.

The Queen of the Empire was no mere puppet. She was a player in this dangerous game. And she had just placed her first piece on the board.

His smile widened, his golden eyes gleaming with something just as dangerous.

"Then let's talk, Your Majesty."
