Lord of Deception

Chapter 32: Chapter 32: The Grand Banquet Begins

The Imperial Palace of Elarion stood as a monument of power, its golden spires piercing the night sky. Beneath its vast chandeliers, a gathering of the most powerful figures in the empire had begun. Lords, generals, merchants, and emissaries—each vying for influence, alliances, or the simple pleasure of watching their rivals fall.

And tonight, Kael Ardyn would walk among them.

His carriage arrived at the grand courtyard, where nobles in extravagant silks and enchanted jewelry whispered at his presence. The young duke who had risen from nothing now strode through the halls of power.

The real game had begun.

A Dangerous Gathering

As Kael entered the Banquet Hall, he took in the scene.

A long, opulent table stretched across the chamber, filled with rare delicacies and vintage wines. Servants in enchanted robes weaved through the crowd, carrying trays of delicacies from across the empire—Phoenix-roasted meats, Lunar Blossom wines, and Void-born fruits from the northern reaches.

But it was not the food that mattered tonight.

Seated at the far end of the hall was Emperor Alden Vetra, his gaze unreadable beneath his jeweled crown. Beside him, Empress Selene, one of the most stunning and cunning women in the empire—whispered to an advisor with a knowing smirk.

And then, at the Hero's seat, sat Aldric.

His face was blank, but Kael noticed the subtle tension in his jaw. The Hero's fall had begun, and he knew it.

Kael's lips curled. Perfect.

But then, a voice—smooth, confident, and laced with amusement—called out.

"So, you're the new Duke of Ravenmire?"

Kael turned to see Queen Isolde of Veyland—the most beautiful queen in the empire. Her sapphire dress clung to her figure, her silver hair cascading over her bare shoulders. But her sharp eyes held something dangerous.

She was watching him. Assessing him.

"Your Majesty," Kael greeted with a respectful bow.

She smirked. "I hear you've been causing quite the stir. Bringing down heroes, bending nobles to your will. If I didn't know better, I'd say you intend to claim the empire itself."

Kael chuckled, meeting her gaze without hesitation. "And if I did, Your Majesty? Would that intrigue you or concern you?"

She laughed, stepping closer. "A bit of both. But I do love a man with ambition."

For a moment, the air crackled between them.

The Queen was testing him.

And Kael had no intention of failing.

The Emperor's Game

A loud chime echoed through the hall.

"Duke Kael of Ravenmire," a herald announced, "The Emperor wishes to speak with you."

The hall grew silent.

All eyes turned toward the imperial throne.

Kael moved forward, feeling the weight of every gaze on him. This was the true test.

As he stood before Emperor Alden, the ruler observed him with cold calculation.

"You rise swiftly, Duke Ardyn," the Emperor stated. "Too swiftly."

Kael bowed. "Only as swiftly as fate allows, Your Majesty."

Alden studied him. "And do you believe fate favors you?"

Kael smiled. "I believe fate favors the strong."

A slow silence followed.

Then, the Emperor chuckled. A dark, amused chuckle.

"Then let us see if you are strong enough to survive what comes next."

Kael felt the challenge beneath those words.

This was only the beginning.
