Lord of Deception

Chapter 107: Chapter 107: The Gods That Whisper

The Imperial Capital lay in a stunned silence, as though the city itself dared not breathe after what had transpired. The execution of the rebellious nobles had been more than a mere spectacle of power—it had been a declaration.

Emperor Castiel was no longer merely a ruler. He had become something else.

The people whispered in hushed tones, their voices laced with reverence and terror. The scent of ozone and scorched stone still lingered where the divine lightning had struck, erasing men from existence with a force beyond mortal comprehension.

But Kael Arden had watched it unfold with calculating eyes. He was no mere spectator in this grand game.

If the Emperor had ascended beyond humanity, then it was time to unearth the ones who had granted him that power.

Beneath the vast halls of the Imperial Library, hidden behind layers of deception and long-abandoned corridors, lay the Forgotten Vaults—a repository of ancient knowledge so dangerous that even the Empire's scholars feared to speak of it.

Kael and Ilyssia moved without hesitation, their footsteps echoing against cold stone as they descended. The air grew heavier, charged with the presence of forgotten secrets and wards left behind by long-dead sages.

Before them, a massive door of black iron and etched silver blocked the way. Unlike the grand doors of the Imperial Archives, this one bore no handle, no keyhole—only a single inscription written in a script older than the Empire itself.

Ilyssia's keen eyes traced the symbols. "A sealing enchantment," she murmured. "No ordinary scholar could have left this here."

Kael placed a hand against the metal. His lips curled slightly.

"And yet, here we are."

From within his robes, he withdrew a fragment of parchment—a stolen incantation from the Emperor's most guarded texts. The moment he spoke the words, the ancient lock shuddered. The silver etchings flared to life before cracking apart like brittle glass.

The way was open.

Inside, the chamber was a tomb of knowledge. Shelves lined with forbidden tomes, their pages untouched by time. Artifacts pulsed with dying enchantments, and scrolls crackled as though resisting the mere act of being read.

But Kael's eyes fixed upon a single pedestal at the room's center.

Upon it rested a tattered black tome, bound in something that seemed to shift between leather and shadow.

Ilyssia exhaled. "That book…"

Kael reached for it.

The moment his fingers brushed the cover, the world around him vanished.

Kael stood in a boundless void, cold and formless. There was no sky, no ground—only an endless abyss.

Then, they spoke.

"You seek knowledge beyond your station."

The voices were layered, distorted—a chorus of countless beings speaking as one, yet never in perfect harmony.

Kael remained still, unshaken. "I seek understanding."

"You seek power."

From the abyss, something emerged.

A being wrapped in golden radiance, its form shifting, neither man nor woman, neither divine nor mortal. Its face was an ever-changing tapestry of light, incomprehensible to the human mind.

An Archon.

"We are the silent architects. The ones who whisper fate into being."

Kael's lips curled slightly. So, they existed.

He stepped forward. "Then tell me, Archon—what have you done to the Emperor?"

The golden light dimmed.

For the first time, there was hesitation.

Then, the voice returned.

"He is no longer yours to control."

Kael's smirk deepened. They feared something.

Good.

The vision shattered.

Kael snapped back to reality, his breath steady, but his mind racing.

The Archons had granted Castiel his power—but they were not omnipotent.

They could be challenged.

He turned to Ilyssia, his mind already piecing together the next steps.

"We need to move," he said, his voice calm but decisive. "If the Archons are manipulating Castiel, then it's time we start manipulating them."

She studied him, her keen elven eyes narrowing. "How?"

Kael's fingers brushed the cover of the tome once more, his thoughts sharpening into a singular objective.

"We dethrone a god."
