Chapter 37: Explode with Romance
The morning after the celebration was filled with festive vibes. During breakfast, the Viscount and his brother, the Baron Kabaneru, discussed and occasionally sought approval from themselves for the wedding date, happily planning their marriage. It seemed like everyone in the Kabaneru family had always wanted these two to be together. The professor was still flustered, but Carol smiled beside him. They already had a seat prepared in a position resembling a newlywed couple. It was a picture-perfect happy ending.
“Thanks to Alexi, you know,” said the Viscount.
Seated at the corner of the long table, being a commoner among the guests, I had an awkward position. Until yesterday, Professor Kabaneru had been sitting on this side too. I sat alone, quietly having breakfast. Corinne gave me a thumbs-up. Thank you. It’s good medicine.
Today, we planned to serve dishes using sweet potatoes and buckwheat flour farine de Sarrazin, including Sweet Potato Patate Douce and Buckwheat Flour Saracen. Unlike potatoes, these were from the previous season. I didn’t know much about sweet potato and buckwheat dishes myself. Sweet potatoes were familiar as sweet potato fries, roasted sweet potatoes, sweet potato croquettes, galettes, and buckwheat noodles. I couldn’t make soba, and sweet potato croquettes lacked soy sauce. Well, in short, I had expertise in making only one thing.
“I’m good at this.”
“Well, it’s fantastic!”
Professor Kabaneru energetically mashed sweet potatoes. When he got absorbed in one thing, he became oblivious to his surroundings. Carol casually touched him from behind. Compared to yesterday, they were much closer. She might seem simple at first glance, but at twenty, she was already an adult woman here.
In short, it was their world. Let them be. Explode.
Leaving them to their own devices, we started working on the other dishes. First, sweet potato french fries. I had eaten these at an izakaya before; when deep-fried and sprinkled with salt, they were sweet and salty. Then, buckwheat flour galette. Since crepes made with wheat flour were already being eaten, I just replaced the flour with buckwheat flour.
“It has a distinctive flavor; this is good too!”
“Some people may not accept it due to body constitution issues, so please be careful.”
The head chef spoke to me more comfortably than yesterday. Not only him, but everyone was kinder to me than yesterday. Everyone probably wanted to say, “Just start dating already.” But if one of them wasn’t interested, it could lead to a disaster. As an outsider, I could easily brush it off with a “Just joking.” I did a good job.
Professor Kabaneru brought me to Charlois, but now I had nothing to do. I thought a more enthusiastic presentation was necessary, but potatoes, sweet potatoes, and buckwheat were easily accepted. With the professor and Carol being together, their hobby of unprofitable play and make-believe stories continued in the past loops, but now they elevated to becoming a big couple bringing benefits to Charlois. The preparations for the son-in-law’s arrival in the Viscount’s family were progressing steadily (Carol seemed to be the only daughter), and it was all a mood of celebration. I, the alien molecule, wanted to go home quickly.
However,
“Don’t say that. We have local dishes and tourist attractions here. Please take your time and explore.”
When the Viscount said that, as a commoner, I couldn’t refuse.
I couldn’t go home. Boredom. In that case, there was only one thing to do.
“Um, are there any dungeons around here?”
The best way to kill time. Leveling up.
