Lockhart of The Kaleidoscope

Chapter 23: The One with The 'inator'

The Kaleidoscope portal shimmered and crackled as Gilderoy and Senku stepped through, leaving behind the primitive landscape of the Stone World. Gilderoy could feel the familiar, dizzying rush of interdimensional travel as they crossed through the swirling void between realities. Senku, ever the scientist, remained calm but watchful, his eyes darting around, taking in every detail of the shifting space around them.

Moments later, the world solidified around them, and they found themselves standing on a tall, gleaming rooftop overlooking a strange city. The skyline was dotted with oddly shaped buildings, most of which seemed to defy architectural logic. Some were impossibly thin, others had no visible means of support, and a few were even floating slightly off the ground.

"Welcome to Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated... sort of," Gilderoy said with a wry smile as they gazed down at the chaotic city below. "We're in the world of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz—a mad genius who's never quite gotten the recognition he deserves."

Senku raised an eyebrow, taking in the odd surroundings. "Mad genius? This place looks like someone's wacky science experiment gone wrong. You're telling me this Dr. Heinz is the guy we're here to recruit?"

"Precisely," Gilderoy said, clasping his hands behind his back. "Despite the... eccentricity of his designs, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz is an inventor with unparalleled potential. His inventions are a blend of wild creativity and surprisingly advanced engineering, though he's never quite been able to use them as effectively as he hopes. His peers... well, they don't exactly respect him."

Senku gave a small nod, though his skepticism was clear. "So, he's a genius whose ideas don't always work out. And you think he's worth recruiting?"

"Absolutely," Gilderoy replied confidently. "What Dr. Heinz lacks in execution, he more than makes up for in innovation. With the right guidance and resources, he could achieve breakthroughs that others would deem impossible. He's the kind of mind that can think outside the box, and that's exactly what we need."

Senku remained quiet, watching as a hovering billboard floated by, displaying a garish advertisement for Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated. The words "Now Open Every Tuesday!" flashed in neon letters, accompanied by a bizarre jingle that filled the air.

"This guy sounds like a real character," Senku muttered.

"He is," Gilderoy agreed, chuckling. "But don't underestimate him. There's genius in his madness."

As they descended from the rooftop via a haphazardly placed elevator that seemed to creak under its own weight, Senku shot Gilderoy a sideways glance, his expression thoughtful.

"You've shown me interdimensional travel, and now we're hopping worlds to recruit a guy I've never even heard of," Senku began, his voice casual but probing. "But that brings me to something that's been bugging me."

Gilderoy raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"If you're from another dimension, and you've got access to all these different timelines, how do you know about me? Or this Dr. Heinz guy, for that matter?" Senku asked, his sharp eyes gleaming with curiosity. "If we're all in different realities, why did you choose us specifically?"

Gilderoy felt a slight pang of tension as Senku's question hit. He had anticipated that Senku would ask something like this, but the time had come to fabricate a convincing lie—one that would keep the scientist engaged without unraveling his entire plan.

"Ah, I was wondering when you'd ask that," Gilderoy said smoothly, giving Senku a knowing smile. "The Kaleidoscope doesn't just allow me to travel between dimensions, Senku. It allows me to gaze into different timelines, different realities, even across multiple universes. I've spent a great deal of time searching for the right people—people who fit the exact qualifications I need for my... larger goals."

Senku's gaze narrowed slightly, but his expression remained neutral. "So, you're saying you spied on me from another dimension? And this Dr. Heinz too?"

"Spying is a harsh word," Gilderoy replied with a chuckle. "Think of it more as... observing. When I was looking for minds that could help me with my specific requirements—yours being your mastery of science and Dr. Heinz's creativity—I found you both. I've seen your work, Senku. Your ability to rebuild an entire civilization from scratch, using nothing but your knowledge of the scientific method, is exactly the kind of genius I've been looking for. And as for Dr. Heinz..." Gilderoy gestured toward the bizarrely structured buildings in the distance, "well, he's an inventor with skills that may be rough around the edges, but he has the raw talent I need."

Senku leaned back against the elevator railing, his arms crossed. "So, you're saying the Kaleidoscope allows you to watch different timelines, find people, and then travel to recruit them?"

"Exactly," Gilderoy said with a nod. "It's how I knew you were the right man for the job. Your work caught my attention. It's also how I know that Dr. Heinz, despite his... questionable reputation, has the kind of mind we need to push the boundaries of science and technology."

The elevator rattled to a stop, and the doors creaked open with a loud groan. Gilderoy and Senku stepped out onto a raised platform overlooking a large, cluttered laboratory. The lab was a chaotic mix of towering inventions, half-finished machines, and scattered blueprints taped haphazardly to the walls. The smell of burning metal and oil hung heavy in the air.

At the far end of the room, a man in a white lab coat was hunched over a workbench, tinkering with what appeared to be a giant laser cannon. He muttered to himself in frustration, his wild, unruly hair standing up in every direction.

"That's him," Gilderoy whispered to Senku. "Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz. Keep an open mind."

Before Senku could respond, the man at the workbench turned around, revealing a tall, thin figure with a large nose and a comically exaggerated frown. He wore a long lab coat over a black turtleneck, and his eyes lit up with sudden recognition when he saw the newcomers.

"Ah! Visitors!" Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz exclaimed, waving his wrench enthusiastically. "I wasn't expecting anyone today—at least not until Tuesday. But welcome, welcome to my evil lair! I'm Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, inventor, evil scientist, and... well, sometimes soft-hearted villain!" He paused, then added in a quieter tone, "Mostly evil, though. Mostly."

Gilderoy stepped forward with a friendly smile. "Dr. Doofenshmirtz, it's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Gilderoy Lockhart, and this is Senku Ishigami. We've come to discuss an opportunity with you—one that involves scientific collaboration on a... multiversal scale."

Dr. Heinz's eyes widened at the mention of "multiversal scale." He dropped his wrench and rushed over, practically tripping over his own feet in his eagerness. "Multiversal? You mean... I could take my inventions to other dimensions? I've always wanted to take my inator technology global, but I never thought about going multiversal! Oh, this is exciting!"

Senku raised an eyebrow, glancing at Gilderoy. "This guy is... something else," he muttered under his breath.

Gilderoy smiled. "Give him a chance."

As the conversation continued, Dr. Heinz eagerly showed them around his lab, explaining his many inators—each more bizarre than the last. There was a Shrinkinator (for shrinking things), a Chicken-Replacementinator (for replacing chickens with more convenient animals), and even a Weatherinator (for controlling the weather on specific holidays).

Senku remained largely silent, his expression unreadable as he observed the chaotic inventions around them. But Gilderoy could tell that Senku was analyzing everything, breaking down the designs in his mind, looking past the absurdity to the core of each invention.

Finally, as Dr. Heinz finished showing them his latest creation—a Memory-Eraseinator—Senku spoke up.

"Your designs are... unconventional," Senku began slowly. "But I can see the underlying principles behind them. The science isn't flawed, but the execution is... well, let's say it leaves room for improvement."

Dr. Heinz blinked, taken aback. "Room for improvement? But I worked really hard on that Memory-Eraseinator! It even has adjustable settings for how much memory to erase!"

"It's not about the settings," Senku said, stepping forward. "It's about streamlining the design, improving efficiency, and maximizing output. Your inventions are genius at their core, but they're not reaching their full potential because the designs are too convoluted."

Dr. Heinz stared at him for a moment, then suddenly grinned. "You know, you might be right! I've always been more of an ideas guy, but when it comes to execution, I could definitely use a little help. Maybe we can make some improvements together?"

Gilderoy smiled, watching as Senku and Dr. Heinz began discussing the finer details of engineering and design. It was clear that, despite the initial skepticism, Senku saw the potential in Dr. Heinz's inventions. And that was exactly what Gilderoy had hoped for.

This was the beginning of something far greater—an alliance of geniuses that would push the boundaries of science and technology across the multiverse.
