Chapter 11: The One Without Hermione
Gilderoy Lockhart sat behind his grand desk, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the enchanted satchel that now held Medusa's head. He had spent years curating an image of charm, adventure, and bravery, but this—this was true power. The severed head of the legendary Gorgon pulsed faintly with the dark energy contained within it, waiting for its next victim. Even in its dormant state, Gilderoy could feel its weight, its promise of absolute destruction, and control. No magical beast or foe could resist its deadly gaze.
Yet, his triumph was tempered with a strange tension. The Chamber of Secrets, the ancient mystery that had stirred so much chaos at Hogwarts, still loomed over everything. He knew the students, especially Harry Potter and his friends, were becoming more determined in their quest to uncover its secrets. The longer the Chamber remained hidden, the more danger it presented to his plan. But now, armed with the ultimate weapon, Gilderoy felt invincible.
He wasn't just a professor anymore. He wasn't merely a figure of celebrity in the wizarding world. Now, he was the man who held a piece of ancient power that few could ever dream of. With the Gorgon's head, he could stop any creature lurking in the Chamber, neutralize any threat, and position himself as a hero in the eyes of the wizarding world—again.
He leaned back in his chair, running through the events of his journey in the world of Clash of the Titans. His intervention had gone perfectly, better than he had anticipated. Saving Perseus's foster family and Io had secured his claim to Medusa's head, and he had let Perseus play his part as destiny dictated. But now that the head was his, Gilderoy's thoughts turned back to Hogwarts and the puzzle he needed to solve.
The Chamber wasn't just a nest for a basilisk—it was a test. A test of power, control, and survival. And Gilderoy would be ready for it.
Just as he was lost in thought, there was a knock at his door. He blinked, shaking himself from his contemplation. A part of him was annoyed—he had grown accustomed to working in secrecy since returning from his journey. But he knew the life of a professor came with its distractions.
"Enter," he called, his voice returning to its usual charismatic tone.
The door creaked open to reveal Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley standing at the threshold. Their faces were filled with a mixture of curiosity and anxiety, their eyes reflecting the weight of the secrets they had uncovered about the Chamber. Gilderoy immediately slipped into his persona, flashing them a charming smile.
"Ah, Harry, Hermione, Ron," Gilderoy said smoothly, rising from his desk. "What brings you to my office today? Another inquiry about some dangerous magical creature I've vanquished?"
Harry and Hermione exchanged a glance before stepping forward. Harry spoke first, his tone careful, but firm.
"Professor Lockhart, we've been doing more research on the Chamber of Secrets," he said. "We know it's been opened before, but we also think it's been opened again. We think—"
Gilderoy raised a hand, cutting Harry off with a knowing smile. "Yes, yes, the Chamber of Secrets. Nasty business, isn't it? I've heard the whispers, too. But, you see, the Chamber is more than just a hidden room. It's a place designed to test those who seek it. And if it has indeed been opened again, then it's likely far more dangerous than we initially thought."
Hermione's eyes widened. "So you believe it too? That someone's opened it?"
Gilderoy nodded, playing along with their concerns. "Of course. There's always truth to such rumors, especially here at Hogwarts, where magic runs deep in every corner." he said, smiling reassuringly. "it's said only salazar slytherin's heir can open the chamber , so if its really open a very powerful dark wizard must have opened it.But don't worry I've dealt with far worse in my time. If something dangerous is lurking inside that Chamber, I'll deal with it—just like I always have."
Ron seemed unconvinced, his skepticism clear in his furrowed brow. "But what about the monster that's supposed to be inside? What if it's something none of us can stop?"
Gilderoy leaned forward, lowering his voice as if sharing a great secret. "Ah, now that's where I come in. You see, I've acquired something special recently—something that can stop even the most fearsome of creatures. But let's keep that between us for now, shall we?"
Harry, Hermione, and Ron exchanged curious glances. "What is it?" Harry asked, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied Lockhart.
Gilderoy waved a hand dismissively. "All in good time, my boy, all in good time. The important thing is that you stay vigilant. The Chamber will reveal itself soon enough, and when it does, I'll be ready."
The trio nodded, though Gilderoy could tell they still had their doubts. They thanked him and left his office, leaving him once again in the quiet stillness of his own thoughts. He watched the door close, his smile fading as his mind turned back to the real problem at hand.
The Chamber of Secrets was indeed opening, and the creature inside would not be a mere obstacle. It would be the greatest challenge he had faced yet. But he had Medusa's head. No monster, no spell, no enchantment could withstand that.
The days at Hogwarts were growing darker, the tension among the students palpable. Gilderoy Lockhart had sensed the shift, and with each passing day, the rumors surrounding the Chamber of Secrets grew more intense. The whispers of fear among the students were now grounded in reality—petrified victims had begun to appear. He had anticipated this, knowing that the Chamber's true power would soon come to light. But now, something had changed, something that required his immediate attention.
He was in his office, sorting through various old texts and artifacts he had "borrowed" from other dimensions during his travels through the Kaleidoscope, when a sharp knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts.
"Enter," he called, hiding the satchel with Medusa's head under his desk.
The door opened to reveal Professor McGonagall, her expression unusually grave. The usual sternness in her face was overshadowed by genuine concern, and Gilderoy instantly sensed that this wasn't just an ordinary visit.
"Professor Lockhart," she said, stepping inside briskly. "There's been another incident."
Gilderoy put on his most concerned face, though inwardly he was calculating what this new development could mean for him.
"Another student, I presume?" he asked, leaning forward in mock seriousness. "This is troubling news indeed."
McGonagall nodded, her lips pressed into a thin line. "Yes. Miss Granger… Hermione Granger has been found petrified."
