Living as an Unemployed in Another World

chapter 6

6 – 1. Footsteps of the Mule (6)

6.

Cleaning the smashed table was surprisingly quick. It was Dylan who broke the table, but because of Celine’s wrath, the adventurers, who were obvious guests, took brooms instead of knives and picked up pieces of wood. They didn’t do anything wrong, but there was no big guy who could stand up to the big lump on her head.

Just looking at it, I wonder if this is what true strength is. Seeing how the people who fly and crawl in my hometown get stuck on one of the hot-tempered waitresses at the inn. Also Celine. She calmly does what I can’t do, and it makes me shudder! I will admire you!

“Oh my God, please don’t be cowardly! Don’t hang out with these guys! What would have happened if I had been hurt!”

…… In the meantime, I was dragged into a corner and explained everything to Celine, but I heard a nagging noise like a storm without getting out of my expectation. No, did someone intervene because they wanted to intervene?

The only men in this big old inn are me and the owner, Mr. Cooper, and while he is away from work like today, I have no choice but to step in and protect the inn. It’s like a tacit promise between the two of us that women don’t know about.

Of course, compared to him, who has a career as a former adventurer and looks rugged in the first place, honestly, what kind of power can I have against adventurers who are corrupt? If we mobilize all we have, we will be able to somehow protect this inn in case of emergency. Such thoughts were hidden in the background. Furthermore.

“Well, I had an idea. Why, the Geralds were there too.”

To put it bluntly, if I hadn’t had a back stomach, I wouldn’t have been able to get bitten by that big guy. I always have plans. When I mentioned myself, Gerald showed a smile of repentance, revealing white dry teeth, but Celine didn’t even look at Gerald. Not even pity

Anyway, after she confirmed that nothing was wrong with me, Celine gave an exhilarating and gruff voice and she went upstairs to the second floor. With such a temper, no matter how pretty she is, who the hell will take her, I’m worried about the future, just like Gerald said.

After the fuss subsided and the lunch business was over, while Celine was washing her dishes, after I finished repairing her bed, I was leisurely basking in the sun in the yard…… Mr. Cooper’s wagon has finally returned.

“Are you here?”

“Okay, was everything okay?”

“That’s what.”

Mr. Cooper, the owner of this inn, is a distinctive middle-aged man with an angular face, brown hair with a hollow forehead, and a wooden prosthetic leg attached to a rugged upper body. While he paid the balance to the coachman, I set down the oak barrels and sacks full of luggage. As the wagon went back the way it had come, we stared at the wheat fields under the sunset for a while.

“I’ll go next time. Call me today.”

“Stop talking nonsense, here, roll this barrel with me. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but my waist isn’t very good.”

“Yes.”

Don’t lie, my forearms are the size of my calves, I almost said the words that came to my mind. Replying to me, I swallowed it in my heart. I’m not kidding, the other day we were both drunk and arm wrestling with a table in the middle, and even with all my strength I couldn’t break one of my wrists. It really made me realize that he was quite a skilled adventurer when he was young.

As I rolled the keg towards the backyard and Mr. Cooper hung the remaining sacks on the backyard, we were greeted by two mothers and daughters hanging out the laundry. Celine didn’t even look at me when I was sweating. The sorrow of the military family is like this.

While Ms. Angela went to get some cool water, Ms. Cooper slipped out and sat down on an empty table. He must be tired, having walked all day except when riding in the carriage. Opposite Mr. Cooper rubbing his prosthetic knee, I naturally sat across from him.

“Did something go wrong today? Wait, the table is a little empty?”

You’re quick to notice. I explained everything. He grumbled, saying that he had to pay for the destroyed table, but unlike Celine, he seemed convinced.

“Isn’t that the guy with the ax handle? It looked like he had a big temper. I managed to dry it.”

“The others helped, what.”

“But don’t go around alone for a while. Don’t even sneak into the city at night. There are many eyes that only see inside the inn, but you don’t know what’s going on outside.”

You sound similar to Janice. If it were me, I don’t think I would hit someone with an ax blade just because I was hurt once. The cost of relieving emotions is too high, but it is the kind of adventurers who cannot easily apply the standards of ordinary people. I replied with a gentle nod.

“Yes. Okay.”

“Tsk, and…… Celine has been very picky lately. Take good care of you.”

She is like that. She is my own daughter, but I still don’t know. I silently nodded my head this time. You can’t uselessly go against the landlord. Instead, he speaks with a shudder.

“That’s how they all grow, well.”

“…… Come to think of it, when you first came here, weren’t you about your daughter’s age now?”

“I was still an adult. Eighteen.”

“Similar, what. At first, I thought some young boy was pretending to be a beggar. The clothes you wear, the weird way you talk. I’ve fixed it now.”

“No, that’s all in the past.”

Why does everyone keep talking about that time? Let the trauma rise. When I made my excuses, Mr. Cooper giggled.

“But dude, don’t you know the impression I got back then? It’s daunting to even manage an inn the size of a snot, but a suspicious guy walks in and knows what’s going to happen. However, when he was kicked out, he thought that some noble family might retaliate later on. It’s just what I’m talking about now.”

Mr. Cooper giggled as if he were talking about what had happened the previous week. Hagisa, I realized that it was really in the past that we could talk like this with a smile.

“Just be honest with me, aren’t you really an illegitimate child?”

“Because it’s not.”

“Or not.”

Above all, I am still grateful to have accepted such a suspicious fellow as a member of this inn. I spent all my money and everything I had to run away from that mansion as far as possible. What could I have done in a remote remote area? At best, he would have been a tenant farmer, or an adventurer. Either way, it would have been much worse than the current life. You have to work all day to barely survive.

“Now, I must have adapted to this place. It would be perfect if I could get a woman and a decent job.”

“Well, isn’t the order reversed?”

“What are you saying, women come first. Traditionally, as long as a man has a cock…….”

Just as Mr. Cooper was about to teach me his own philosophy of life, punctuated by the adventurous lifestyle, silence fell between the two of us as Mr. Angela brought her cold water to cool her knees. Living with such an angelic wife, if you have a conscience, you won’t be able to brag about her masculinity in front of him. He coughed and said again.

“Thank you, honey.”

“What?”

“Kuhm, anyway! I’m sure everything will be fine. And the job search.”

No, well. Because I’m not going to work. Forever. I don’t know why both of them treat me as a pitiful bastard who isn’t ready to go out into the world. You don’t even know what an optional leave of absence is.

Ms. Angela took the bucket and left, leaving the two of us alone in her hall again. When they were together again, Mr. Cooper checked for deafness this time and whispered to me.

“And about what I said last time…… You were right.”

“What is it? No, can you?”

“I can’t believe it.”

Whoa, Mr. Cooper let out a deep sigh for the first time. From the reaction, I knew the words were true. As he told me the story of his visit to the city, he told me in detail what a wonderful view he had of the inn.

“It’s so close to here, and you have a good neck. So, everyone was watching to see what was going to happen…… No way, in this day and age, I would have thought that a new inn would be built in the middle of the city.”

I felt like my eyes went dark after hearing Mr. Cooper’s words. I heard from adventurers that someone was opening a large inn in the port city of Eastside, and I told Mr. Cooper about it.

Rumor has it that the owner is a young female president with great connections in the business association. She is not a daughter of an aristocratic family, so where did she get the money to buy the entire building? If she could transform the entire grandiose four-story building into an inn, the cost wouldn’t be a joke.

“I don’t know how many gold coins I used, it was very shiny from the entrance.”

“Well, then what should I do?”

“What should I do? You have to do business as you normally would.”

Mr. Cooper said resolutely.

“Looking at it, it’s only been a while since the business started, so it’s only attracting attention. The customer was not even half full.”

“But… ….”

“I know what you’re worried about, but there’s a bit of a distance between here and there in the first place. It wouldn’t matter if the guests overlapped, but luckily the guild and the streets were similar, so adventurers who were tired of the city’s waterfront would stay here. Besides, our Angela’s food skills are rather good.”

Mr. Cooper said worriedly but indifferently. The ‘Golden Mule’, which monopolized adventurers around the area as guests without any major competitors for the past several years, now has a rival again. I wish I could be carefree like this, but I also didn’t have a way. In the first place, the number of seats, the number of rooms, and the unit of money will be different. It’s not an opponent that can be won with sales, so I have no choice but to pray so that I don’t steal a lot of customers.

And then, exactly three days after that.

As soon as the entry restrictions for the dungeons Gerald mentioned were lifted, their party was the first to leave for the mines. As soon as the rumor spread, all the adventurers who used the outskirts as their base rushed towards the artifact with their eyes on.

The inn that was newly opened in the city had a similar distance to the guild, but it was very close to the dungeon, so even though they paid a lot of money, there were regular customers flocking there.

On the other hand, the ‘golden mule’, which requires a half-day ride in a wagon to go to the mine…… Like a lie, customers suddenly cut off.

Our inn is open as normal.

But no one is looking for it.

It’s been five years since I fell to another world, and I’m in danger of starving for the first time.
