Chapter 34: The Assessment Team Arrives!
Han Dang coming to Oto City wasn’t particularly surprising.
This was something he could do.
Needless to say, he was definitely here to dig deeper into the fire case and wanted to make an issue out of the pardon order to impeach their teacher.
“He really came. He’s an out-and-out dangerous person.” Zhong Wei sighed heavily. “Junior Sister said that he might visit Gu Shen’s residence. It’s exactly like the person in the email said. How strange. Is someone keeping an eye on Han Dang for us?”
Senior Sister Luo was deep in thought. “Interesting… Han Dang is famous for being a mad dog. Anyone he targets will lose a piece of flesh even if they don’t die. But Gu Shen met him and came out unscathed. How can there be such coincidences in this world? How can there be such a lucky person?”
Gu Shen was an incredible fellow.
Starting from the A-009 incident, his journey was full of bumps. Just looking at the files gave rise to the sense of ‘this kid is so lucky’. Every time he faced danger, he always managed to escape by some stroke of luck.
But in reality, there was no such thing as absolute luck.
“Little Gu must have some secrets,” Zhong Wei said. “I could tell during the special training. He didn’t create the fire on the roof with his transcendental ability.”
“Yes. But who doesn’t have secrets?”
Senior Sister Luo smiled, but her gaze lingered beyond the umbrella, in the layers of dark rain clouds. “Those who can enter the Adjudication Bureau, no matter how ordinary they may seem, all have extraordinary secrets. At least, that’s how it is in this era, right?
“Let’s put aside the matter of that mad dog for now.”
Senior Sister Luo took a deep breath and looked up at the sky. “After waiting so long, the most troublesome people are finally here.”
There was still a tough battle to come tonight.
The deep roar of rotating blades resounded in the distant sky.
Lightning flashed in the rain.
A heavy-duty helicopter sliced through the rain and slowly approached. Its rotor blades pierced through the clouds and rain like a ferocious monster bathed in lightning. This helicopter was nearly four times the size of typical civilian ones.
“This flight from the Dadu District is indeed different.” Zhong Wei stared at the helicopter slowly descending and mocked expressionlessly, “So damn rich.”
The thick cabin glass was wiped clean.
Someone sitting by the window waved at the two waiting on the tarmac while wiping the glass. They looked very enthusiastic, but the rain was too heavy to see this person’s face clearly.
This surprised Luo Er and Zhong Wei. Logically speaking, this assessment should be very strict.
The meeting to determine the assessors and the meeting to impeach their teacher had been held together. Judging from the complex internal situation and competition within the East Continent Parliament, the selected people in the end should be cold-blooded and ruthless!
Those who were close to their teacher or had vested interests in him had likely been excluded from the Parliament’s proceedings due to the suspicion of bias.
Then, who was this enthusiastic person wiping the glass?
“Senior Sister, I’m feeling a bit nervous.”
The helicopter landed.
Seeing the helicopter’s cabin door slowly open, Zhong Wei whispered, “What if these guys are uncooperative and ignore us?”
“We’ll have to adapt accordingly.” Luo Er stood upright, calm. “Our task is very simple. Get information about the direction of the Parliament’s assessment from these guys and minimize resistance for Gu Shen as much as possible. If we can find out the content of the assessment, it will be a total victory. Even if these guys don’t give us face, how can they not give Teacher face? Don’t forget. The big shot who issued the pardon order has been paying close attention to this matter. His assistant is also on the plane.”
The wind and rain howled.
The two of them stood tall and straight like pine trees, waiting for the arrival of the iron-blooded assessment team.
However, after the helicopter landed, the engine roared, and the cabin opened, but no one came out.
No one appeared.
There was silence.
“What’s going on…” Luo Er frowned, feeling puzzled. The cabin door opened. Is this a signal for us to… go over?
Zhong Wei stared at the helicopter, his expression becoming increasingly strange.
The person sitting by the window was still waving at them through the glass.
“Senior Sister, look at this person.” Zhong Wei stretched out a finger and pointed at the figure behind the glass blurred by the rain. “Doesn’t he look familiar?”
…
The interior of the heavy-duty helicopter was spacious enough to seat several burly men comfortably.
Outside the window, the rain pattered continuously.
Inside, soft lighting filled the cabin, accompanied by jazz music. A few uncorked bottles of champagne were on a small foldable table.
Zhong Wei, who boarded first, was dumbfounded the moment he saw the scene in the cabin.
He wondered if he was hypnotized.
Zhong Wei could hardly believe the scene in front of him. Sitting in the cabin was indeed a luxurious lineup of top assessors. At first glance, he could see two heavyweights. One was the grand magistrate praised by the people of the Ying Sea District as the ‘Archduke of Law’, and the other was the famous cold-blooded and ruthless chief justice of the Penitentiary Bureau in the Redwood District. These two famous big shots were locked in a fierce staredown… separated by the small table.
There were two bottles of champagne on the table, but the rest of the space was cluttered with large glasses of white beer, most of which were already empty, indicating that they had experienced several rounds of fierce battles.
The most unbelievable matter was the person sitting in the center of the iron-blooded assessment team. He was wearing a simple tunic suit, with his hair meticulously arranged.
“Sit.” Mr. Tree laughed and waved to signal his beloved disciple to come in and join the fun.
“Wh-what’s going on?” Zhong Wei was dumbfounded. Why did his teacher appear here?
When Luo Er, who boarded later, saw this scene, she was shocked. These law giants of the East Continent, known for their strict adherence to principles, were gathered together to drink and play games. This was completely different from what she had imagined.
“The impeachment meeting against me just ended, and I happened to catch this flight and make a few more friends along the way.” Their teacher had a pipe in his mouth, and the smoke swirled around the cabin, obscuring his face. He laughed uninhibitedly and said, “It’s all thanks to Mr. Cui’s help.”
Only then did Zhong Wei and Luo Er notice the out-of-place figure sitting in the most secluded corner, quietly reading a newspaper.
This man was incredibly inconspicuous, sitting in the corner like a faint shadow.
Everyone would subconsciously ignore him.
The reason was simple.
His facial features and temperament were too ordinary, so ordinary that they could be described as utterly unrecognizable. This was not an exaggeration… Perhaps the only thing memorable about his face was the monocle in front of his right eye.
At most, there was the modest smile that never left the corner of his lips.
This man looked like a remnant of the previous era, without any hint of ‘new’ on him. From his hair to the soles of his shoes, everything was immaculately clean. But at a glance, it somehow evoked words like old and retro… A closer look would make people feel that he must be a very dull person.
But suddenly…
The mention of Mr. Cui seemed to have a magical effect, making the big shots of the assessment team look over, and even much of the drunkenness in their eyes dissipated.
All eyes fell on the back row.
“Everyone, there’s no need to look at me like that or be nervous.” Mr. Cui smiled, as though he couldn’t feel these gazes. From beginning to end, he remained focused on his newspaper. He said softly, “Thanks to Elder Zhao, we can work together. It’s not easy to meet up when we’re scattered all over the place. Before getting down to business, it’s fine to drink and catch up.”
With these words, the atmosphere inside the cabin eased.
“Thanks to Elder Zhao…”
Luo Er and Zhong Wei exchanged glances and seemed to understand something.
The fact that their teacher arrived in Oto City with the assessment team meant that the outcome of the two meetings had been finalized.
There were a total of twenty seats for members of the Parliament in the nine districts of the East Continent. Those who could occupy them were all formidable figures who held great power, but there were still differences in hierarchy among the twenty seats.
The Dadu District was the core of the four districts in Riversouth.
And ‘Elder Zhao’ was the one standing at the highest point of the Dadu District.
