Chapter 2: Chapter 2 – Unknown Memories
Ren continued to clutch his head as waves of pain coursed through his skull, making it hard to focus. He blinked several times, disoriented. Where am I? The last thing he remembered was the impact with the car. His body slumped forward, and as his vision cleared, he noticed the massive, grand bed he was in.
If my head wasn't pounding, I'd think I'd woken up in a palace bedroom or some kind of royalty suite, Ren thought, his mind barely able to register the details.
"Ugh… just how did I end up here?" he muttered, rubbing his temples as the pain slowly ebbed.
He tried to remember, but everything after the car accident was blank. No hospital bed, no doctors around me, nothing like I'd expect after a collision. He scanned the room, finding it empty and silent.
Just what the hell happened to me? Where am I?
As he began to push himself up, a distinct sound echoed in his mind—a soft, metallic chime.
-Ding!
Before his eyes, a faint, glowing blue screen appeared, as though suspended in mid-air.
[The synchronization of memories is completed.]
[You can now see the memories of the previous owner of this body.]
Ren's eyes widened as he didn't even know what to think. Synchronization of memories? Previous owner? Does that mean... this isn't my body?
Questions kept appearing in his mind as the pain had completely disappeared. He didn't try to go through the new memories which he now supposedly had access to. Instead, he walked toward the grand mirror installed in the right corner of his room.
He wanted to get a good look at himself. It was the best way to know if he had truly inherited a different body.
He walked in front of the mirror, and… once more, confusion arose on his face. His reflection wasn't anything like he had expected; it wasn't him.
Ren touched his hair. Why is my hair blonde?
For all of his life, it had been brown. Then, he looked at his eyes; they were now a beautiful green color, which was pretty much the opposite of the brown eyes he previously had. However, the one thing that jumped out at him was his new body. It was… so frail, there was practically not an ounce of fat on his body, and there was also practically not an ounce of muscle.
The body he now possessed clearly had never trained in his entire life. It was either that, or he could barely feed himself. But the latter made no sense considering the luxury of the room he had found himself in.
I guess there's only one way to find out, Ren thought as he closed his eyes and started to think of his past.
Memories that weren't flashed inside his mind. He could see a young boy with brown hair and brown eyes. But he could also see the blonde-haired boy and his green eyes. Whatever those messages were that had appeared before him, they weren't lies.
Ren continued to look through his memories as he wanted to see the life of the young man who had previously occupied this body. The name of this body was also Ren, surprisingly. The Ren of this world was eighteen years old, and he didn't seem to be the most liked by his family. With only a quick glance at his memories, Ren had seen multiple instances of bullying, getting beaten to a pulp, and his father and mother looking at him in disdain.
It took a few minutes, but Ren had managed to gather the most important information about this new body he was now in control of.
Three years ago, every single child at the age of fifteen went to the Awakening Ceremony, where they would obtain access to a Status. By obtaining a Status, you would gain access to an interface similar to the one you would see in video games. You would have a level attached to yourself, stats such as strength, agility, and stamina. However, most importantly, you would learn of your class. The class obtained would truly dictate the future of everyone, including this body's previous owner. However, when he learned about his class, that's when everything went south.
He had awakened the class of a [Summoner]—a class that was renowned to be considered useless because you would need to rely on others to fight, and from what the world had seen, the beasts that summoners could use to fight were complete trash. Skeletons, zombies, half-dead creatures were the only things that they could summon, making their summons have extremely low fighting abilities. However, getting the class of a [Summoner] was still manageable for Ren. It's what came afterward that completely ruined his life.
Born into a noble family, the pressure was extremely high when it came to upholding the family's honor, and part of that came from your abilities as an Awakener. Not only had Ren awakened one of the worst classes known, he hadn't once leveled up.
Leveling up, especially at low levels, is considered easy because the requirements to do so are ridiculously low. However, no matter how hard the previous owner of this body tried, he was stuck at Level 0. His family had even bought monsters and beat them half to death just for him to level up at least once. But even then, there was a problem… a problem that had kept him at Level 0 for now more than three years.
His life, which had been absolutely perfect three years ago, had turned into a nightmare. With his inability to level up and his horrible class, his noble family had given up on him; his siblings would pick on him every chance they got, and his "friends" that he had made in the past were now bullying him. Long story short, his life had reached such a terrible state that the past Ren was in a state of depression, not saying anything even if he would get beaten up to a pulp by his own family. He had decided to give up.
Ugh… why did I inherit the body of such a useless person? He literally has nothing going for him, Ren thought with a frown. In all the isekais I read, the main character would get reincarnated into the bodies of characters with overpowered powers. Not only did I get reincarnated into the body of a trash, the only thing he could do was summon useless undead that can barely fight.
Honestly, Ren had no idea what to do or think of this situation. He didn't even know where to start. The only thing he knew for sure was the fact he had been transmigrated into a world of fantasy, where beasts, monsters, and powers he had never seen before existed.
Status, Ren decided to call out as an informative panel appeared before him.
[Status of Ren Allen]
[Level 0]
[Class: Summoner]
[Strength: 1]
[Agility: 1]
[Stamina: 1]
[Skills: Undead Summoning (Lvl.1)]
Ren looked at his status, unimpressed and without the slightest surprise. It looked the same as in the memories he had just seen, absolutely abysmal.
"You'd think that I would get some kind of gift to help me in this new life of mine…" Ren complained, letting himself fall onto his gigantic bed, his mind filled with all kinds of thoughts.
-Click!
The door to his room quietly opened without Ren hearing it as he continued to talk to himself, staring at the ceiling.
"Let's hope I can get some kind of cheat soon enough. Otherwise, my life will continue to be hell on Earth," Ren mindlessly uttered as the person who had just entered his room simply observed him, unsure what was currently happening.
"Uh… young master? Is something wrong?" a soft, beautiful, and feminine voice uttered.
Ren, who had no idea someone had entered his bedroom, jumped up in surprise. When he saw who the owner of that voice was, an innocent smile crept up on his face.
It was his maid, Emma. She was probably the only person who had not done anything against this body's previous owner, from what he had seen. She had always done her best to be supportive even if things… well, were not exactly going well.
"Yeah, everything is totally fine… totally fine," he said with a bright smile.
Emma found his behavior a little strange compared to his usual self. However, she didn't make a comment on it. It was not her role as a maid to do so, anyway. "I see, that's good. Did you sleep well?" she said as she immediately started making the bed Ren was lying down on.
Ren nervously nodded as he wasn't sure how to act or what to say. After all, he didn't want people to find out that he came from another world. Who knows what they would do to me? Kill me? Torture me? The possibilities were endless.
"Uh… it wasn't too bad."
Emma frowned as she turned her head. "Oh, you didn't have nightmares this time?"
"Oh, yes. Of course, I had nightmares. I'm just so used to them now that I ignore them as if they don't exist in the first place," Ren said as he feigned to know about the existence of those nightmares. After all, Ren hadn't gotten the time to look through every single memory. There were simply too many.
She nodded. "That's good. What are you planning today, young master? Will you stay in your room today as well?"
This time, Ren truly took his time as he didn't know what was the best decision for him to take. He had two major options up for the taking. He could continue to act like this pitiful and pathetic self by hiding in his room all day. Or, he could decide to take his life into his own hands, taking drastic changes, trying to become more powerful and level up for the very first time.
Maybe something changed since I'm the one in control of this body now? Ren thought as he made his choice. After all, there was only one way to find out if that was the truth.
"Actually, I would like to go to the nearest hunting grounds. I want to practice my skills at killing beasts."
Emma's eyes completely widened as she continued to make the bed, not saying anything just yet. But the look on her face was one of pure surprise. It had been more than one year since Ren had willingly come out of his room on his own.
After a few moments of silence, she had no choice but to break it out of excitement.
"Y-You want to go to the nearest hunting grounds?! This isn't a joke, right?"
"Yeah… who knows, maybe something changed about my class."
