Chapter 208: Deputy Head of the Fifth Investigation Team
"What?"
Upon hearing this, Luo An's expression showed some surprise.
How could it be so quick?
But before Luo An could ask about the reason behind it, Augustus softly added:
"Vireness has almost fully recovered, I just inquired, she will be discharged tomorrow."
Hearing this, Luo An's eyes immediately lit up.
Then, seeing Augustus's big black face raise an eyebrow in a sign, a smile also appeared on Luo An's face as he quickly picked up the bottle of wine and clinked it with Augustus:
"Thank you, boss, for the news."
"Don't thank me, you earned this through your own effort."
Patting Luo An's shoulder, Augustus picked up the bottle and clinked it with him, then took a big swig, and the two exchanged a glance, bursting into laughter together.
On Sunday, Luo An and Augustus went to the hospital where Vireness was staying, and while visiting her, they helped her pack up some of her belongings for discharge.
Early Monday morning, Augustus received notice to attend a meeting upstairs.
Five hours later, William, who had the quickest access to information, was the first to find out the news that the head of the New York Branch of the FBI - the Criminal Investigation Department, Special Agent in Charge Kobert, was transferred to the Washington Headquarters.
And the one to take over the position of Special Agent in Charge was a woman named Vireness!
At that moment, when the news was heard, various departments within the FBI New York Branch became instantly abuzz.
After all, it was the year 2005, and without political correctness, there were not many women leaders within the Federation Government, not to mention an enforcement department like the FBI that is completely led by men and predominantly male.
The ground-level agents were quite astounded by this, while some well-informed leaders above understood the reasons behind Vireness's successful climb.
Apart from having strong support behind her, another important reason was her team, Investigation Team Five, and an agent named Luo An Greenwood in that team, who continuously solved cases, unrelentingly pushing Vireness to the top.
The success rate of cases solved by Investigation Team Five is not one hundred percent, and it likely won't be in the future.
Because before Luo An was transferred here, Investigation Team Five had taken on several cases but failed to resolve them, ultimately having to hand them to other teams.
Thus, at that time, Investigation Team Five had a success rate of 0%, trailing directly as the last among the thirteen investigation teams.
But ever since Luo An joined Investigation Team Five, the success rate here began to soar, rapidly approaching one hundred percent.
When Vireness took office as the Special Agent in Charge, finished her inauguration speech, and began announcing new orders.
One of them was to promote Agent Luo An Greenwood to Deputy Team Leader of Investigation Team Five, and as the leaders looked at one another, no one raised any objections or dissent.
Aside from Vireness asserting her authority as the new boss, another reason was that Luo An Greenwood truly deserved it!
Vireness's two rivals also felt somewhat moved; if she hadn't had Luo An Greenwood, or if Luo An Greenwood had been under their command, perhaps they could have replaced Vireness as the Special Agent in Charge.
When the news of Luo An's promotion to Deputy Team Leader came from Augustus, the agents of Investigation Team Five first paused, then erupted in unison into applause.
"Fantastic!"
"Congratulations, Luo An!"
"No, from now on, we should call him Deputy Team Leader Luo An!"
The agents whooped and hollered cheerfully, among them Mona's eyes gleamed with the most delight, and Reesi clapped the hardest.
While Laid clapped, a reflective look crossed his face:
"Luo An becomes a deputy team leader at 25, am I too old?"
When 35-year-old Reesi, who was next to him, heard this, the corners of his mouth twitched, and he gave Laid's arm a hard slap.
Although he had been somewhat prepared, when the appointment was officially issued and the document was handed over by Augustus, a smile involuntarily appeared on Luo An's face.
After all, with the promotion to deputy team leader, his salary had increased from 3000 to 4000!
That was the real reason he was most happy.
After fooling around with the agents for a while, Luo An entered the team leader's office and wondered:
"Chief, now that Vireness has been promoted to Special Agent Supervisor, who will be our new investigation team leader?"
Augustus chuckled and took a sip from the coffee cup on his desk before replying:
"It's the former head of the second investigation team, Hurel Host."
There were two reasons why Augustus hadn't been promoted; the first was that he had been transferred from another department to head the fifth investigation team for too short a time. The second was that he was too old.
The latter, his age, was the most significant factor, even if Luo An rapidly increased the fifth investigation team's case-solving rate.
"Hurel is an old friend of mine. After the meeting just ended, I had a chat with him."
After putting his coffee cup back on the table, Augustus looked at Luo An and chuckled:
"Handle cases the way you always do, he won't interfere with the fifth investigation team's work."
Officially, the fifth investigation team is under the jurisdiction of the newly promoted team leader, Hurel Host, but now everyone knows Luo An Greenwood is Vireness's man.
Moreover, the reason Hurel Host was promoted to team leader was because of his many years of experience, not because he had someone backing him or for any other reason.
Barring any accidents, Hurel will retire as a team leader at most and won't get promoted further.
Therefore, facing Luo An, a young talent who became the deputy team leader of the investigation team at the age of 25 and was clearly under Vireness's protection for future advancement, Hurel would not bend over backward to ingratiate himself but certainly wouldn't trip Luo An up. Cooperation for mutual benefit is the best strategy.
And with Hurel's years of experience, he believed that the position of team leader was the next step that Vireness had prepared for Luo An!
Upon hearing Augustus's words, a smile immediately appeared on Luo An's face. After a brief chat, Luo An stood up and left the office.
After a brief interaction with Mona and others, Luo An left the fifth investigation team's office area and headed to Special Agent Supervisor Vireness's office.
When Luo An arrived, Vireness was sitting behind her desk, head down, dealing with a stack of papers twice as tall as her head.
Knock knock knock—
"Come in."
Vireness's response was still brief and to the point.
After entering the office and closing the door, Luo An chuckled:
"Congratulations, Chief."
When Vireness looked up and saw Luo An, a slow smile spread across her expressionless face, and she pointed to the sofa next to her:
"Sit."
"Thank you, Chief."
Luo An sat down on the sofa, his eyebrows raised, as Vireness not only got up from her chair and walked over to the sofa but also personally poured him a cup of coffee.
"Thank you, Chief."
Taking the coffee, Luo An sipped lightly, his eyes lighting up immediately. It tasted better than the new coffee at the fifth investigation team's office.
Seeing the sparkle in Luo An's eyes, the corners of Vireness's mouth lifted slightly:
"When you leave later, you can take some of these coffee beans with you. They are of good quality."
"Thank you, Chief."
Luo An grinned and accepted, Vireness's gaze growing more satisfied. After thinking for a moment, she handed Luo An a folder.
As Luo An expected, it contained a notice of his rank advancement at the Columbus Foundation.
"Wow."
Luo An's smile grew wider, and just as he was about to look up and speak, a rapid knock on the office door suddenly sounded.
Before a frowning Vireness could speak, the door was abruptly opened, and the newcomer said urgently:
"Chief, NYPD just called us, reporting the discovery of the body of one of our FBI senior agents!"
Hearing this, the two people in the office had a swift change in expression, and Vireness immediately stood up:
"Which agent? What's their name? Which department did they come from?!"
