Legacies: Infinite Journey

Chapter 6: A Morning in The Library

[19/01/2030, Salvatore Boarding School]

The morning was still very chilly, with no student of the Salvatore School awake at this time of the morning on a very saturday. No student but John.

Sat down in the library, John was spending his time reading through the hundreds of pages of many books he chose among the library's examples.

In the last few days, the young man got interested in more than one thing about this world. Among the many interests, Magic was the main one, but from yesterday, his curiosity spread towards two new ones, the physiology of the supernatural species and the creation of spells.

Josie's physiology was quite interesting. Siphoners' ability to siphon magic from others was incredibly useful to say the least. They could remove the magic from a werewolf's venom and save the life of a bitten vampire or use the blood of a vampire to siphon magic. Now, the possibilities of what a Siphoner could do were quite interesting. One that John actually thought was the possibility of killing a vampire by completely absorbing their magic.

Vampires are creatures transformed from humans who drank vampire blood in their systems and then died, resurrecting moments later by the vampire blood in their body and to complete the process they must drink on human blood.

Vampires are creations of magic, their immortality resulting from a fractured Immortality Spell, the same for their enhanced physical attributes and magical abilities like Compelling, a lesser version of Immortals' Psychic abilities.

So, what happens if a Siphoner siphons all the magic from a vampire? Or is it even possible? John remembered that when Mary Louise tried to siphon the magic from Rayna Cruz's sword, Nora had said that the sword was too strong and that Mary Lousie, a Heretic, wouldn't be able to siphon it all without dying.

And here raises many questions. Is the magic in the sword stronger than the one in a vampire? Being an Heretic means that they can siphon more magic than normal Siphoners do or that depends from person to person or they all can absorb the same amount? There were too many questions and few answers for what the boy searched for.

Well, these books at least explain how Elena jumped off a more than one hundred meters cliff and didn't break her legs or how a vampire reaches subsonic or even sonic speeds without their flesh ripping apart, but how a wood stake with no edge can penetrate their skin with so much ease. Looking at the explanation, John thought it quite made sense.

Apparently, any time a vampire's skin is in touch with some wood, they lose their enhanced attributes in the respective part of their bodies which is in touch with their bodies.

That explains why stakes with almost no edge can cut through a vampire's skin with the same facility as a very sharpened steel dagger or knives.

Anyway, returning to the Siphoners topic. Killing a vampire through siphoning their magic seemed a possibility. After all, if the twins could siphon the magic of a barrier spell, they could also siphon the magic of a vampire to end their immortality. After all, their immortality was a result of the magic in them, and without it they would die. The only question was if they could siphon this much magic at once.

I remember Kai Parker saying he could siphon all power from Bonnie and let her die. But due to how things developed, I don't know if that was a bluff or not. I mean, the guy absorbed all the magic the Travelers used to make the Anti-Magic Barrier around Mystic Falls, that must mean he probably can absorb all the magic from a vampire. As for all of Bonnie's Magic? I would need to know how much power Bonnie possessed at that time and how much energy there was on that Anti-Magic spell to know it. However, I bet these two possessed much more magic than a normal vampire did. So the possibility is still up. John thought, remembering all these things from the series, but finding not much practical knowledge in it. In the end, if I want answers, I need to run some experiments to come to any conclusion. And there are too many variables. First, how all supernatural beings seem to have magic released from their souls constantly. John thought, remembering what he saw yesterday during lunch. And that would explain many more things. John thought, this recent discovery made him understand more about this world.

During his time in the school, although a short one, John discovered that the flow of magic going through it was always natural, with no one but himself altering it, with sometimes he noticing a few changes, but he made sure to look at these and checked that all these alterations were due to the twins absorbing the magic coursing through the school to cast their own spells. That means that besides John and the twins, it seemed no one else in the school had the ability to actually absorb magic. And that's a huge discovery alongside the fact all supernatural beings could generate magic from their souls.

A few days ago, when talking with Hera, he already knew the witches from this world had a power of their own, something that was insinuated many times across this Universe's three series, that magic basically coursed through, apparently, almost every human's blood. Be it in small quantities, not enough for someone to tap into it and become a witch, or in huge amounts, like Hope. However, what he didn't know was that they regenerated their power through their own Soul. This discovery alone changed a lot of John's ideas about how this universe works.

So, apparently, besides the siphoners and me, no other witches absorb magic from the environment to use it. But, why of that? Is it because they know that their magical energy will come back with time and simply don't care about absorbing it from the environment, or because they are incapable of that? This question surged in John's mind. I mean, it would be strange if they can't absorb the energy considering they can actually channel magic from other sources to cast specific spells, but from yesterday to now, I didn't sense a single person in the school doing it between me and the twins. Then, that raises only two options. Or every witch in the school is too lazy to do it, or they really can't absorb it and store this power in normal circumstances. John speculated. He thought that he very probably might be right, but he needs more information to be certain of everything.

The only reason he wasn't 100% sure was because John knew there were specific cases that his point wasn't right. But they were so very specific that one might say they stray too much from the curve, not serving as an example. For example, Davina absorbing the power of all the Ancestors and other three Harvest Witches after the failed Harvest Ritual or the Hollow absorbing Elijah's power to fuel her resurrection.

And to get a definite answer for all these questions, John decided to continue his studies, spending the next hour with his face deep in the books, his eyes moving at an incredible rate as the pages of the books flew by at a speed no normal human could follow.

And he continued like that until the sound of footsteps approached the library.

"What are you doing so early?" The rough voice of Dorian, the school's librarian resounded through the almost empty place.

"Studying." John replied, his eyes not leaving the book. "Too many questions and few answers."

"Anything I can help with?"

"Do you know why witches apparently can't absorb power from nature and have to rely on their own power?" John asked, raising his eyes from the pages and facing Dorian.

His question actually brought a curious expression to Dorian's face, making him raise his eyebrows.

"That is a good question…" He said. "Where did it come from?"

"After spending a few days in the school, I actually noticed how besides me and the twins, no one else seems to have the ability to actually absorb magic. They can channel it to cast their spells, but not absorb them. And there is even a difference between me and the twins as I can store this magic for later, but that's not the same for the twins. If not used, the magic they siphoned eventually leaks from their bodies and come back to nature. When seeing this, I started to question myself: Why? Why can't witches absorb magic normally? What stops them from doing it?" John asked, explaining only half of his reasons to Dorian. He couldn't actually tell the man all of this was the result of him thinking if a Siphoner could kill a Vampire by siphoning all of their magic.

To his explanation, Dorian actually brought an answer to him. "There are certain theories for that in the witch community." He said, walking around and approaching one of the bookshelves, getting one of its books. "According to some witches, this is a limitation nature puts onto witches themselves for them having the blessing of magic. Something following the line of: 'I already gave you so much, be happy with it.'" He said, handing the book to the boy.

Taking the book, John passed over the pages quickly, reading what Dorian just explained.

Druid Circles from Europe, Shamanic groups from Asia and America, Tribes from Africa and there was even a mention of the Gemini Coven.

So that's why the Gemini Coven treats siphoners poorly? Because of the belief that magic can't be absorbed, that someone can only use their own power, which was granted by nature. That would make sense considering how the Gemini Coven prioritized the balance of nature. John thought, a few pieces of the puzzle finding their places in his mind. Is that why siphoners can become Heretics? Very possibly. Because they are outside of nature's standards, a loophole, the siphoners can become witch-vampire hybrids. They are not restricted to the same laws as normal witches. Interesting. Very interesting…

"So that's why things like Sacrificial Magic and Rituals are also not seen well by others and labeled as Dark Magic? Because it theoretically is against nature's order?" John asked Dorian.

"You could say so." Dorian nodded.

Although an affirmative answer, Dorian's reply didn't bring out a satisfied reaction from John. "Urgh, how the hell does all of that work?"

"What exactly are you referring to?" Dorian asked.

"Everything. I had this talk with Hope yesterday, about how magic seemed way easier than expected. And then I asked her if Nature, which seems the governing body of the world, was alive. But not in an instinctual way, I meant real conscious."

"Is that something even possible?" Dorian asked.

"Well, Hope replied me with a good answer as to why that shouldn't be possible. Loopholes." John said. "Spaces in nature's laws that permits the existence of things who technically shouldn't exist. She said that if Nature was conscious, it wouldn't permit beings who defied its own laws to exist."

"Well, that makes a lot of sense…" Dorian said.

"But there is something that is bothering me." John said. "We are aware that Nature, at least, has an instinct or a natural programming of it, something that notices the changes in itself and tries to find balance for it. Although not entirely applicable biologically, since there are always exceptions, it's common that all organisms try to find ways to increase their survival chances or reproduction so as to have better future generations. In Nature's case, this instinct would be the desire to find balance in itself. However, to better resolve these loopholes, wouldn't it be better to completely get over them instead of simply finding weakness? And then I started to think, why Nature behave like that? And from there, I came up with two paths for what Nature can be."

"I'm all ears." Dorian said, sitting down on a chair as he was finding the conversation interesting.

John raised one finger. "First, Nature is… restricted. Be it instinctual or conscious, it is restricted in some way. It can't change things as it pleases. If it was all powerful as we think and free, beings like Vampires or any type of immortality wouldn't even exist. So, instead of actively intervening in it, it uses the best ways it has to find balance again." After explaining his first theory, John raised one more finger, but this time slower, to give more impact to his following words.

"And second, Nature is unrestricted, and the existence of loopholes then can only mean one thing, it is conscious and the 'loopholes' are not accidental, but purposeful, left there by Nature itself." John said, lowering his hand.

"But why would it leave them there? Wouldn't it be better for it to simply erase them?" Dorian asked.

"I have no idea." John shrugged his shoulders. "In the end, I have no proof for these theories. They are just my ideas and nothing else. I may be missing something or I'm wrong. Who knows?" John said, grabbing a book from the pile of books he prepared earlier. "And unfortunately, it seems nothing I find in these books can help me find these answers." He flipped the book's pages, reading it at super speed whilst talking to Dorian.

Looking at him, Dorian thought a little before rising from his chair and approaching the bookshelves, grabbing one book or another here and there. And before someone noticed, there was a pile of them in his hands.

With large steps, Dorian approached John and handed him the books.

"These ones might give you something useful, or hopefully some insight." Dorian said after tapping on the top of the pile. "If you have any doubt, you can just call me out."

"Thanks, Dorian."

"You are welcome, kid." He replied with a smile. "If you find anything, try to share it with the school. Although we are not a research facility, it's never bad to understand a little bit more of this strange world we live in."

"No problem." John said, getting one of the books before starting to read it.
