Chapter 12: From the ashes, she arises.
The time has come for me to depart from this place, but not without fully harnessing the power of this volcano. The prior ritual, "Ritual of the Bloodflame Awakening," has exacted its toll, yet I continue to reap some benefits even after the force's effects have dissipated. The rituals I am to perform will not be on myself this time, as my hands are already occupied with mastering the skills I possess. Donning my tunic and withdrawing my wand from within, I picture the cavern in my mind, and with a creak, I Apparate into the cavern.
Apparition is the spell I've practiced so frequently that I no longer need to perform the wand movement or incantation. Teleporting is an incredibly useful skill to have. In battle, you could Apparate to the other side and surprise your opponents, but this is only advantageous if you've mastered Apparition. Without mastery, it produces a sound both when you depart and when you arrive. Another drawback is that you can only teleport to locations you've previously visited.
In the future, I plan to master the skill to such a degree that I'll be able to teleport to places I've only seen in pictures or can vividly imagine. It won't be long before I reach that level of mastery. In other areas, I've attained a level of proficiency comparable to an Auror in Harry Potter. I can now perform conjurations and use various charms and spells for defense against the dark arts. The spell I've longed to learn is now within my arsenal.
"Protego Diabolica" is a dark charm that surrounds the caster with a protective ring of black fire, incinerating enemies while leaving allies unharmed. The black fire can also manifest as winged creatures, spreading quickly and capable of immense destruction. Despite being a spell that manipulates fire, it is not difficult to master. Now, I can conjure black fire with just a thought.
After mastering "Protego Diabolica," I began studying the "Fiendfyre curse," prioritizing the counter-curse due to its potential variability in this world. A month into practicing Fiendfyre, I have gained sufficient control to use it safely without fear of it becoming unruly. While its flames may serve a purpose in rituals, their dark essence makes me prefer using conjured fire or dragon fire instead.
Next, I have perfectly mastered Occlumency, and I feel that soon I will be able to enter my inner world. As for Legilimency, I have ventured near town and begun reading surface thoughts without harming minds. I am making good progress at a pleasing rate, but I have not yet delved deeply into their minds, so my experience in this area is not as extensive as I would like. However, I believe it will come with time.
Moving on to the rituals, these remain unnamed as I choose not to disclose them. The first ritual, to be performed just once, could make a Valyrian Dragon Lord so proud, were they alive, that they might gladly offer their daughters in marriage. Dragon Lords were fond of breeding and nurturing new creatures. Contrary to common belief, dragons were not created by our ancestors through flesh crafting. Had that been the case, dragons wouldn't be the sole creatures the Dragon Lords possessed.
The flesh pits of Gorgossos were the result of dragon lords' failed attempts to create new breeds or enhance their dragons. In fact, the Valyrians were not known for flesh crafting before the Ghiscari wars, as this magic originated from them. After their conquest, the Valyrians learned this magic and began experimenting for their own purposes, but they never achieved any success. In every Valyrian dragon lord's castle, one could find gargoyles, paintings, and statues of various magical beasts. Valyrian dragon lords even competed among themselves to see who could possess the most exotic and superior specimens of animals. They invested substantial amounts of gold and slaves for animal husbandry. The slaves tasked with animal care enjoyed a higher status than many minor lords of freehold, as Dragon lords always valued talent, and animal husbandry was highly coveted.
The Order of Dragon Keepers has always been held in high esteem by the dragon lords, who seldom deny their requests. This revered order was one of the sacred institutions in Valyria. Anyway, the first ritual I intend to perform is the creation of a phoenix. Indeed, after searching through the memories of two wizards for rituals that could heal animals and bestow upon them new abilities, I discovered that I could acquire any skill with the aid of essence. However, to do so, I must first understand the skill in question. Utilizing the knowledge and understanding of the two wizards' bloodlines, I learned these skills. Yet, mastering them and finding a way to incorporate them into my bloodline remains my own challenge.
The Dumbledore family does not share a bond with their phoenix as a Dragon Lord does with dragons. Therefore, I had to master this ability as a skill and surpass their level. Upon reaching the cavern, I found the three captives lying unconscious on the floor. These individuals are intended as sacrifices for the ritual. They are the cannibals whom I captured yesterday at the volcano's edge. After probing their minds with Legilimency, I discovered they have been practicing this for a long time.
Afterward, I began to inspect the other ingredients required for the ritual. The weirwood box remained intact post-ritual, but sadly, the dragon heart did not survive. The dragon heat essence, contained in the vial I crafted, will endure until the ritual's completion. To create Valyrian steel shards, I must melt it down with dragon fire; only then can I shatter it to obtain the shards. I utilized cutlery from Valyria for this purpose. Finally, and most importantly, three dragon eggs are necessary—they must be sacrificed to create a phoenix.
Upon reaching the site I had discovered within the volcano, deemed perfect for the ritual, I began arranging the ingredients and eggs into a triangle on the ground. I placed the weirwood box at the center and started positioning Valyrian steel shards and blood essence around it, then roused three cannibals to surround the shards in a triangular formation. After ensuring everything was correctly placed, I positioned dragon eggs around the box to form a protective barrier. You might wonder why I use three elements in this ritual? It's because three and seven are potent magical numbers. Sacrificing seven dragon eggs is not an option, and the weirwood box I possess could not contain the immense power and life force this ritual is set to unleash.
With everything in place. It's time to chant,
"Ānogri perzys, gevives ēngos!
Henujagon ondoso, ēbrion jorrāelagon.
Syz zōbrie īlva, gevives lēda drējī,
Hen ōños ēngos, gevī jorrāelan!"
"Spirit of fire, ignite the flame!
Rise from the earth, beloved reborn.
Good ashes ours, reborn with strength,
From death's embrace, rise anew!"
After stirring magic with chanting, I started to sacrifice cannibals by slitting open their throats with Valyrian knife. After their death, as a result of excessive bleeding, their magical energy and life force began to flow towards the weirwood box, fuelling the ritual. As the ritual advanced, the dragon eggs started to glow with a fiery light, signaling the accumulation of life energy. The essence of the dragon's heart, enriched with the life force from the sacrifices, was then drizzled over the eggs.
Magical energy and life force began to coalesce into the box from the surrounding environment and the ritual itself. The accumulated energy was so intense that it was visible to the naked eye. I then directed this energy to the center of the circle, where it fused with the essence-infused dragon eggs, resulting in a fiery explosion that forced me to step back. Once the dust from the explosion began to settle, and after dispersing it with a spell, I approached the eggs.
But there was nothing left of them, nor the ingredients and sacrifices used in the ritual. The only thing visible on the floor was an ash pile that hadn't been blown away by my spell. As I approached, a small head emerged from the pile, resembling a delicate chick, barely larger than a human hand. Its feathers were a soft, glowing amber, shimmering faintly with embers flickering like a dying flame. The chick's eyes were large and bright, exuding a fiery intelligence.
I bent down and picked it up in my hand. Despite its small size, the newborn phoenix was radiating warmth and vitality, its presence comforting yet otherworldly. It felt magical, much like when I first encountered Anarion. After the ritual was complete, he let out a roar as if welcoming someone. I began to contemplate a name for it, or rather her, as she seemed to prefer. As I pondered over her in my mind, I instantly understood her capabilities and what she might achieve in the near future.
After considering her abilities, I knew the perfect name for her would be "Vezofina." As I uttered "Vezofina," she tilted her head back, her fiery eyes shining with a sense of acceptance and satisfaction, as if she approved of her new name. Then, from the depths of her glowing chest, a soft note emerged—a sound that resonated with the very core of the earth. The note was pure and clear, reminiscent of a crystal bell's chime, yet it held the warmth of a thousand flames. As Vezofina's song filled the air, the melody grew, weaving a tune that was both hauntingly beautiful and evocative of a long-lost dream.
After a while, she ceased singing, and I opened my eyes. Truly, magic is a blessing, and anyone who says otherwise is a fool of the highest order. What else but a blessing could create such a being? Her song is divine; there are no other words for it. One could listen for an entire day and still feel disappointed when it ends. I intend to listen to her as much as possible because her music also has a healing effect on me. Following her song, my bond with her grew stronger than ever.
Afterward, I retrieve the ashes I had previously collected, along with some herbs and spices I have with me. She only eats that from my recollection; if she fancies something else, I would simply purchase it from the nearby harbor. Upon seeing the herbs and ashes, she emits a joyful trill and begins to nibble on them.
While Vezofina was eating, I began to contemplate a suitable place for her growth and habitation. Currently small, she will require a safe haven after each rebirth to mature and thrive. In her present vulnerable state, she needs protection, but once fully grown, she will be self-sufficient. My thoughts were interrupted when I noticed the pile of ashes from which Vezofina had emerged. Realization dawned on me; I had entirely overlooked the fact that phoenix ash is a magical ingredient with numerous uses.
After securing it in the jar, I throw the jar into the trunk. Now that I know where Vezofina will live and have time to grow, I plan to create a space for us with the aid of an extension charm and runes. If Newt could do it, so can I. I've begun searching for the tools needed to make the suitcase, as the trunk is too cumbersome to carry everywhere.
It appears my stay here will be extended for a while. It will take some time for Vezofina to grow, protect herself, and utilize her healing powers. Vezofina may not possess Fawkes' teleportation abilities, but she has healing flames, a lesser version of her tears. The choice of healing powers over teleportation was not mine to make; it lies in the hands of the world and magic. They determine whether a phoenix will be born and the powers it will possess. As Vezofina grows, she will become more powerful than Fawkes and reach the size of smaller dragons.
The second ritual I intended to perform was to heal Anarion's wing tears. However, Vezofina can now accomplish this with her flames. In the meantime, I will create a suitcase where Vezofina can grow and heal Anarion's wings, as I am uncertain how Targaryen would respond to my presence. It is essential for Anarion to be in his best form.
*****
One month has passed, and today is the day Anarion will be healed. As I leave the potion room I created in the dimension for Vezofina's habitation, my intention to construct a castle with the luxuries of the modern world remains. However, I postponed it to ensure the best environment for Vezofina and Anarion to thrive. My ambition doesn't end with Vezofina; I plan to create as many magical creatures as possible.
As I exited the dimension, the trills of Vezofina echoed behind me; she soon followed. I began to pack all my essential belongings. Then, I made my way towards the heart of the volcano where I had placed the dragon eggs. Reaching a section hotter than the cavern, I carefully gathered the twelve eggs and brought them to the magically created volcano, setting them within the runes that would keep them in stasis. They would remain there until the time was right, or until I found someone to nurture them into hatching.
Vezofina and I began our journey towards Anarion's cave, nestled deep within the volcano. Upon arrival, I roused him from his slumber, and upon seeing Vezofina, he let out a huff. Anarion and Vezofina share a competitive relationship as they vie for my affection. However, when not in competition, they coexist quite amicably.
