"God, I love breakfast," Ron muttered before he pounded his chest and let out an unashamed burp, eliciting a grimace from Hermione as she waved her hand in front of her face. "Bloody hell, Ron, do you have to be so repulsive?"
"I can't help that beans give me gas; besides, it's better that it came out my mouth rather than my-"
"Hey Harry, is that your sister?" Hermione interrupted Ron before he could finish and pointed down the hallway as two people walked in from outside, standing nearly shoulder to shoulder and talking enthusiastically.
At the mention of his sister, Harry froze mid-stride and followed Hermione's finger to stare at the duo. At first, all Harry noticed was the disparaging difference in height between the duo as they were turned away, but he could never forget his sister's raven black hair. Harry hadn't gotten a chance to talk to Rose since she had gotten to the school, and some of him felt guilty for ignoring her.
'It's for her own good. The last thing Rose needs is to get caught up with my problems, especially with Voldemort still potentially waiting in the shadows.' Harry consoled himself that he was doing the right thing.
"Wait, is that Thane she's walking with?" Ron muttered as he narrowed his eyes, "It is! The bloody bastard is talking to your sister, Harry!"
"What!" Harry spluttered as he took a closer look at the person Rose was walking with, and he wondered how he didn't recognize Thane's broad figure and the mane of brown hair that trailed down his back, "Why would they be talking?"
"They look shiny as well...I think it's sweat," Hermione chimed in as well, mostly to herself all while haunting memories filled Harry's mind as he remembered Thane's fight with Voldemort and the Dark Lord's subsequent vow to torture them for all eternity.
"She shouldn't be with him," Harry muttered under his breath before he suddenly broke out into a brisk walk, rushing to catch up with his sister.
"Harry... Harry!" Hermione called after him as she jumped to catch up with him, and Ron was quick to follow as well.
"Rose....Rose....Rose!!" Harry called out three times growing in volume with each utterance of his sister's name until she eventually stopped before turning around to face him.
Harry's vision collapsed as he focused on his sister's face, her flushed cheeks, the stray strands of hair plastered to her skin with sweat, and the redness of her eyes. She had been crying not that long ago. Harry's heart pounded in his ears, and his gaze slid from Rose to Thane as he turned around as well. Their eyes met, and all Harry could focus on was the cold, unfeeling gaze in Thane's dark emerald pupils.
"You...what did you do to her," Harry asked in a harsh whisper as he walked up to Thane, his heart pounding with anger, "If you hurt her...I swear I'll make you pay!"
"Hello, Harry," Thane replied calmly, unbothered by his hostile approach, "We were just talking about you."
"Talking about me?" Harry repeated in a confused tone before he glanced at Rosinke, only to flinch back as he met the icy cold fury in her eyes, "Hello, brother."
"R-rose...are you alright? He didn't hurt you, did he?" Harry asked as he took a step towards his sister, only for Rose to take a step back in response, "Why are you here?"
Her question made Harry pause, "I-I saw y-your eyes. I was worried."
"Bullshit," Rose hissed as her hands balled into fists, "Don't act like you care. It's been almost a week since I got here, and you haven't said a word to me. You weren't even at my Sorting Ceremony to see what house I was placed in."
"T-that's n-not my fault. The train station malfunctioned!" Harry exclaimed, "A-and we're talking now, a-aren't we?"
"Last year, you didn't write me a single letter. I checked every day, but there was nothing," Rose mumbled, her voice barely audible, but the raw emotion in her voice could be felt as clearly as a cold, bitter wind.
Harry grimaced, "I-I'm sorry, things got hectic, I-it hasn't been easy for me-"
"Hasn't been easy?" Rose asked, her dark eyes pitch black as she glared at her brother. "What great trauma has the Boy Who Lived suffered?
"You don't understand," Harry replied, "I was just trying-"
"No, you don't understand!" Rose roared as her aura flared with such force that it made the air stir, "You left me with them...as soon as you got the chance, you ran and didn't look back!"
"I-I didn't leave you," Harry stammered, "I just...I just...I was trying to protect you!"
"You didn't protect me from anything," Rose screamed as she slammed her foot on the ground, and a layer of deep blue frost spread out from her foot and crept across the ground, making Harry stumble back in surprise.
"But you know who did," Rose asked, her voice at a whisper again, "Thane protected me."
Harry blinked as he briefly glanced at Thane before shaking his head, "No...he doesn't want to protect you, Rose. It's just a trick...don't trust him for a moment...he's dangerous."
"I know he is," Rose replied in an almost giddy tone as she glanced at Thane out of the corner of her eye, "He nearly killed Malfoy after he had those trolls put their hands on me."
"Malfoy did what?!" Harry exclaimed, "He didn't hurt you, did he?!"
"Just some bruises, but Thane stopped him before he could do anything worse and even took care of me after," Rose replied as a taunting and malevolent smile spread across her face, "He's even offered to teach me magic so I can defend myself."
"That's not a good thing! He managed to kill a troll barely a month after we started school last year! I doubt even third-years can pull that off! The magic he uses is dangerous and you should be as far away from it as possible." Harry shouted back before whirling around to address Thane, "I don't know what you're playing at, but stay away from my sister. She doesn't need to get caught up in your mess!"
"You don't control me, Potter, and your sister is a free person. She can decide who she spends her time with," Thane replied, his voice still unwavering.
"Don't lie to me! I've heard the rumors. You've had your eyes on Rose since you saw her at the Sorting Ceremony!" Harry snapped back, "Was my cloak not enough? Are you trying to take my sister left as well?"
"You're reaching Potter," Thane warned, "The only reason I was staring at your sister was that I was surprised to find out that you had a younger sibling. And even more surprised that she was sorted into Slytherin. I knew how much trouble she would face thanks to your reputation."
"Shut up!" Harry screamed as he took a step toward Thane, who flinched, not at Harry's approach but at the a dangerous note that sliced out through the air with all the subtly of a dagger.
Thane watched as Rose stepped in front of him and raised a frost-covered hand so cold that vapor trails rose into the air like steam. Her mana sang out from her pathways a shrill note that was almost painful to listen to, "Take another step, and I'll bury you in ice!"
"R-rose, h-how are you doing that?" Harry stammered as he looked at his sister, confusion and betrayal evident in his eyes.
Before Rose could follow through on her promise, Thane moved in behind her, gently reaching out and placing a hand on her arm. "Don't do something you'll regret...not for my sake."
Rose's frosty hand trembled for a moment before the frost covering her skin disappeared as she lowered her hand with a choked gasp and took a step back.
"Easy now," Thane consoled her as Rose backed up into him, and he placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, "Deep breaths, you're alright."
Rose sniffed before taking a deep breath and nodding, "I-I'm good...I'm good. Let's get out of here."
"Rose, I-" Harry started, but he was cut off as Thane glanced down at him, his emerald eyes seeming to glow as his pupils narrowed into verticle slits, "I think you've said enough for now."
Harry tried to get out a response, but it was like the air in his lungs had turned to concrete, and an invisible but tangible pressure rolled off Thane as his eyes pinned him down. After a second, the sensation passed as Thane blinked, and his eyes returned to normal so smoothly that Harry doubted they had even changed in the first place.
Then, without another word, Thane turned around, arm still around Rose's shoulder, and all Harry could do was watch as they walked away.
"You're just letting them go like that?" Ron asked as he stepped up next to Harry, who hadn't taken his eyes off his sister's distant back.
"Shut up Ron! I didn't see you jumping in to interfere," Hermione snapped back, making Ron's face flush with embarrassment, "I-It was a family matter. It wasn't my place."
Hermione rolled her eyes before turning back to Harry, "We should get going. We have Defense Against the Dark Arts in less than an hour."
Harry, with a visible effort, looked away from his sister and met Hermione's gaze, "Did...did you see Thane's eyes?"
"W-what?" Hermione asked, taken off guard by the question, "Sorry, I didn't notice...I was too busy trying to piece together the magic Rose used. I've never seen anything like it...she didn't even use a wand."
"...Just like Thane," Harry muttered before he suddenly turned around and started to walk away, "Come on, let's go to class."
Hermione and Ron shared a concerned glance before shrugging and moving to follow Harry, who was still lost in thought.
---
"I should have given him frostbite for talking to you like that! You've helped me more than he ever has!" Rose muttered angrily under her breath as she and Kenji walked his arm no longer around her shoulders, "I mean, what is his problem!"
Thane exhaled through his nose, "Your brother has good reason to dislike me, but I think he was more concerned for your well-being."
"He lost the right to be concerned about me when he left me with those pigs," Rose snarled, and Thane watched as her crossed arms started to mist as ice crystals spread across her skin.
"Rose, your arms," Thane pointed out, making Rose stop mid-stride and curse as she dropped her arms to her side, "Damnit, what the hell is happening to me!"
Thane stared at the frost covering Rose's arms, and after a moment of internal debate, he decided to answer her, "Intrinsic magic."
Rose blinked and glanced back up at him, "I-intrinsic magic? What's that?"
"What I'm about to say you can't tell anyone else, alright?" Thane asked, and Rose quickly nodded, "It's a lost form of magic that doesn't use wands or incantations. Instead, you use the natural frequency of mana. Here, take my hand."
Thane held out his hand, and Rose glanced before slowly extending her own. Thane flashed Rose a reassuring smile as their fingers interlaced before focusing on his mana. A note rang through the air a second later, but instead of the deep bass chord that flared with the intensity of a raging inferno, a lone solitary pitch rang out like a flute carried out on a spring breeze. For a moment, Thane was thrown off, confused at the sudden change in frequency, before he realized what was happening, 'This is my harmony...not my beasts. I didn't know there was a difference.'
Meanwhile, Rose gasped as she heard an echo of the note, and her own mana stirred in response, trying to respond. But instead of a steady, rounded pitch, Rose's harmony wavered and faltered her pathway and reserves far too small to support the taxing magic.
Thane dropped the harmony a few seconds later and let go of Rose's hand as a slew of emotions passed across her dark eyes, "T-that was beautiful..."
"Thank you...your harmony is stunning as well. I can't wait until you can hear it for yourself." Thane replied with a smile.
Rose nodded, "Your welcome also. I think there might be someone else that can use Intrinsic Magic."
"There is?" Thane asked, surprised only for Rose to nod her head after thinking for a second, "Yeah, there's this girl in Ravenclaw; we have charms class together. And I always catch her looking at me and smiling...but her magic...it feels familiar. I got the same feeling when you just used yours now."
Thane stared at Rose for a second before a broad grin split his face, and he laughed. Rose blinked before her face fell, "I knew I shouldn't have said anything."
Rose went to turn away, but Thane caught her hand. "Wait, Rose...I'm not making fun of you. You're a hundred percent right. The girl's name is Luna, and she's just like us. We've actually been working together on a project."
Rose stopped pulling away, "Really a project; she seems like an airhead. I heard some people calling her Looney."
A tiny mote of anger rose up within Thane, but he pushed it aside and shook his head, "Well, they're wrong. Luna is brilliant...she just cares less about fitting in than most. I'll have to introduce the two of you properly sometime, but I suggest you try just walking up and talking to her. I think the both of you would get along."
"Really?" Rose asked skeptically.
Thane's mind flashbacked to the shared laughter of Elara and Solara as they sat in their respective thrones, and a smile spread across his face, "Yeah, I do, trust me."
---
Running later than usual, Thane was forced to take a seat toward the back of the class, though it was more than okay with him considering who was teaching the class, 'How the hell did he get this job.'
"So there I was, in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, surrounded by sirens..." Lockhart sat on the corner of his desk as he recounted the most likely fictional tale to the class, which was how most of his classes went. Thane had to admit it wouldn't be that bad of a teaching format if the man knew what the hell he was talking about.
Thane could only shake his head in discontent and was about to pull out his grimoire to study on his own. He was suddenly interrupted by a warm buzzing sensation crawling over his skin as someone sat down next to him.
Thane glanced over to his left and froze when his eyes landed on the person beside him, "Daphne?"
The platinum-blonde migraine incarnate smiled, her lips stained with dark lipstick only noticeable with how close they were, "Morning, Thane."
