Ch5- I See Dead People
As they neared the front door, Kai's eyes suddenly widened, and he stopped dead in his tracks. There, standing near the entrance, was the ghost of Orihime's brother, Sora. At first, Kai thought he was just seeing things, but as he focused on the apparition, he realized it was all too real.
He tried to act nonchalant, not wanting to alarm Orihime, but the weight of the situation was too much to bear. He had to tell her the truth, no matter how shocking or unbelievable it might seem.
"Orihime," he began, his voice tense with urgency. "There's something important I need to tell you. Can we go inside?"
Orihime looked at him, her eyes filled with concern. "Of course, Kai. What's wrong?"
He shook his head, unable to find the words to explain just yet. "I'll tell you everything once we're inside."
Orihime unlocked the door and led him into her living room. As they sat down, Kai took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He knew what he had to say would change everything, but he couldn't keep it from her any longer.
"Orihime, I need to tell you about some strange things that have been happening to me recently," he began, his voice wavering slightly. "All of a sudden, I started to see souls and monsters. And lately, I've started to see people dressed in black fighting those monsters. I don't know why it's happening, but I can't ignore it any longer."
Orihime stared at him, her eyes wide with shock. "Kai, that's... that's unbelievable. Are you sure you're not just imagining things?"
Kai shook his head, his expression deadly serious. "No, I'm not. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. And there's something else I need to tell you."
He hesitated for a moment, steeling himself for the revelation to come. "Orihime, your brother's soul is in this room right now."
Her eyes grew even wider, and her face paled. "My... my brother? Are you... are you sure, Kai?"
He nodded, his gaze locked on Sora's ghost. "Yes, I'm sure. I can see him, clear as day. I know this is a lot to take in, but I promise you, I'm telling the truth."
Orihime's hands trembled as she tried to process the enormity of the situation. Her eyes filled with tears, but she held them back, desperate for answers. "Can you... can you tell me what he looks like? What he's doing?"
Kai looked at Sora's ghost, his expression solemn. "He's standing near the door, watching us. He looks... sad, but also a little relieved, as if he's been waiting for this moment for a long time."
Orihime's breath caught in her throat, her heart aching with a mixture of hope and sorrow. "And... and can you talk to him? Can he hear us?"
Kai hesitated, uncertain of the implications of his newfound abilities. "I... I think so. I've never tried to communicate with a soul before, but it's worth a shot. I have always ignored them."
As he said that, Orihime started to softly hit his chest, pouting. "You were always like that, avoiding anything troublesome. You should have been more caring!"
Kai couldn't help but smile at her reaction, even though he knew she was right. "I know, and I'm sorry. I should have taken it more seriously from the start."
Taking a deep breath, Kai turned his attention to Sora's ghost, who seemed to be watching them intently. "Sora, can you hear me? We want to talk to you."
The ghost's eyes widened in surprise, as if he hadn't expected anyone to address him directly. Slowly, he nodded, his gaze filled with a mix of hope and caution.
Kai relayed the response to Orihime, who clung to his arm, her eyes brimming with tears. "He can hear us, Orihime. He's listening."
Orihime took a deep, shaky breath, struggling to find the words she wanted to say. "Onii-chan... it's been so long. I've missed you so much. I never thought I'd get the chance to talk to you again."
Sora's ghost smiled softly, his eyes filled with love and affection for his sister. He reached out a hand, as if trying to touch her, but it passed right through her.
Orihime gasped at the sensation, her tears finally spilling over. "Onii-chan... I wish I could hold you one more time. I'm so sorry I couldn't do more for you."
Sora shook his head, his expression gentle and forgiving. "Don't apologize, Hime. It wasn't your fault. I've been watching over you all this time, and I'm so proud of the person you've become."
Kai translated his words for Orihime, who sobbed quietly as she listened. "He says he's been watching over you, Orihime. He's proud of you."
Orihime's tears continued to fall as she clung to Kai, her heart heavy with emotion. "Onii-chan... I need to tell you something. The last words I said to you before the accident... I told you that I hated you." She sobbed harder, her voice cracking with the weight of her confession. "I didn't mean it, Onii-chan. I never meant it."
Sora's ghost looked at her with understanding, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I know, Hime. I've always known. It's okay."
Orihime reached up and touched the hairpins that Sora had bought for her – the same ones she had rejected with harsh words all those years ago. "I wear these hairpins every day, Onii-chan. I love them. I love you. I'm so sorry for everything."
Sora smiled through his tears, his love for his sister shining brightly in his eyes. "Hime, I forgive you. I've always loved you, and I never stopped worrying about you, even after I died. But it's time for me to move on."
He turned his gaze to Kai, who was watching the siblings' emotional exchange with a mixture of sadness and determination. "Kai, I want to entrust my sister to you. Please take care of her."
Kai nodded solemnly, feeling the weight of the responsibility placed upon him. "I will, Sora. I promise."
As Sora and Orihime attempted to hug each other, their arms passed right through one another, making their longing for physical contact even more poignant. Kai, feeling that he should do something to help, reached out and placed his hand on Orihime's forehead.
Soul Cube in his heart, responded to his desire to help the siblings connect. Using the Soul Energy that he had recently discovered, Kai channeled it into Orihime, creating a bridge between the living and the dead.
As he did this, Sora's ghostly form solidified, and Orihime could finally see her brother. Their eyes met, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. Tears streamed down their faces as they embraced, finally able to touch and feel each other's warmth.
"I can see you, Onii-chan," Orihime whispered, her voice filled with wonder and gratitude. "I can really see you. I can feel you."
Sora hugged her tightly, his voice choked with emotion. "I can feel you too, Hime. And I can feel your love. Thank you, Kai."
Kai watched the siblings, his heart swelling with happiness for them, even as he knew that their reunion would be brief. He held Orihime's hand, silently offering his support as they shared their final moments together.
"Onii-chan," Orihime said, her voice trembling as she tried to hold back her tears. "Promise me that you'll find peace, wherever you go."
Sora nodded, his eyes shining with love and determination. "I promise, Hime. And I'll always be watching over you, even if you can't see me."
