Chapter 89: Chapter 88: Lightning Release Chakra Mode
Chapter 88: Lightning Release Chakra Mode
Tonari initially thought mastering sealing techniques would be straightforward. As long as he formed the hand signs and controlled his chakra flow properly, it should work.
But he quickly learned that wasn't the case.
Sealing techniques, much like genjutsu, were a unique branch of jutsu distinct from standard ninjutsu. While they didn't require specific chakra nature affinities, they demanded an exceptionally high level of chakra control.
Moreover, the chakra flow patterns in sealing techniques differed significantly from those in conventional ninjutsu.
Under Kushina's patient guidance, Tonari gradually understood the mechanics behind the two sealing techniques, the nuances of chakra control, and the intricacies of their hand signs.
It was only now that he realized why so few shinobi in the world specialized in sealing techniques.
"In short, your chakra control is sufficient, but since this is a new method for you, it'll just take some practice to get the hang of it," Kushina explained, summarizing her advice.
Today, Kushina had opened Tonari's eyes to a whole new facet of the shinobi world—sealing techniques.
After chatting with Kushina a while longer, he left, urging her to rest well.
---
Alone in a training grove, Tonari created shadow clones to fully focus on studying the two sealing techniques. He was determined to master them in the shortest time possible.
---
Three days later, in the underground lab beneath Ichiraku Ramen, Tonari had finally learned the two sealing techniques. He owed much of this progress to Kushina's hands-on guidance after her recovery.
Since then, Kushina's team had begun taking on various missions, mostly simple D-rank tasks.
Among all the recently graduated teams, only Tonari's squad—led by Tsunade—had yet to take on a single mission.
"I've got about ten days of freedom left. Once we start missions, my schedule won't be this flexible," Tonari thought to himself as he prepared his experiment.
This would determine whether his theory worked. Success could mean another significant leap forward in his taijutsu. Failure, however, would mean abandoning the idea of Lightning Release Chakra Mode for the foreseeable future.
On the table lay a grotesque mass of tissue, pulsating with visible electrical currents and twitching erratically.
"After three days of cultivation, the original few cells have grown unchecked into... this. Honestly, it's disgusting—almost on par with White Zetsu. At least Zetsu vaguely resembles a human."
Tonari grimaced at the sight. Were it not for the potential benefits, he wouldn't touch the thing.
Trying to view it as pure chakra helped ease his revulsion slightly.
Gingerly, he placed the tissue in a chalk-drawn array on the ground. The array was formed by intricate characters that were critical to the Evil Sealing Method. A single mistake in its design could result in failure—or worse, unpredictable consequences.
The Evil Sealing Method had once been used by Kakashi to suppress Orochimaru's Curse Mark on Sasuke. While it hadn't held indefinitely, the fact that it could seal something as potent as sage chakra spoke volumes about its efficacy. Sealing Lightning Release chakra, in comparison, was far simpler.
Taking a deep breath, Tonari steeled himself.
This was the moment of truth.
Forming hand seals slowly, prioritizing precision over speed, he carefully monitored the flow of his chakra.
The Evil Sealing Method required an unusually large number of seals—more than any jutsu Tonari had attempted before.
Tiger → Rabbit → Serpent → Horse → Goat → Rooster
(Repeat)
Dog → Rat
Each seal was executed with meticulous care.
Finally, he pressed his chakra-coated palm onto the grotesque tissue. The characters etched into the ground began to glow and converge at his hand.
When all the symbols merged, the sealing technique was complete.
The chaotic tissue, previously writhing with energy, now lay silent and still.
A smile broke across Tonari's face.
Success!
Surprisingly, it had gone smoothly.
Next came the relatively simpler Universal Sealing Technique.
Despite its grand name, this technique was essentially a storage method, albeit more advanced than standard storage scrolls.
Tonari took out a ring engraved with the kanji for "Lightning" and slipped it onto his right index finger. Forming hand seals once more, he activated the seal.
The grotesque tissue vanished from the ground, and the kanji on the ring glowed faintly.
"It worked!" Tonari exclaimed.
The massive tissue had been reduced to a small, portable ring—a testament to the wonders of sealing techniques.
Placing his hands into the Rat seal, he uttered, "Evil Sealing Method, release!"
A faint hum emanated from the ring as a small portion of the sealed Lightning Release chakra seeped out.
"Ah—tingly," Tonari muttered, wincing as a sharp pain shot through his hand.
The electric current spread from his finger throughout his body. Sparks crackled across his skin, growing increasingly intense.
Soon, his skin began to scorch, filling the room with the acrid smell of burnt flesh. His once-pale skin turned a dark, charred hue.
Realizing the current was too strong for his unconditioned body, Tonari quickly adjusted the output, reducing the flow to a manageable level.
Only then did his body's resistance improve, and the pain subsided.
Using Lightning Release chakra to stimulate cells was no trivial matter. Even among Cloud ninja, only a select few could master this technique, the pinnacle of which was wielded by the Raikage.
Through science, ingenuity, and sealing techniques, Tonari had managed to replicate a rudimentary version of the Lightning Release Chakra Mode.
There were, however, significant limitations.
Unlike the traditional method, his approach lacked the intensity needed for substantial physical enhancement. Additionally, the source of his chakra—the grotesque tissue—was finite and would deplete over time.
"How to replenish this chakra will be my next big challenge," Tonari mused.
