I couldn't believe it's been a few months since I started this life again. At the beginning, I was just going to go all murder-happy, but then I got bored. That's the thing—this courtly intrigue and planning, this type of shit? I can't bear to do it unless it's particularly amusing.

After entering the town, I took Davina to the mansion. At first, I thought of leaving her in New Orleans, but after thinking it over, I felt that since she was my apprentice, I could take her and keep her away from her coven. They'd undoubtedly hound her, and honestly, I wasn't in the mood for witches nagging in my ear every damn day.

The shows didn't do justice to us at all. They turned our story into some teenage drama to appease girls and women because, apparently, they can't grasp what a thousand-year-old existence really means. The first time I perished, I went with the flow since our family was safe—I couldn't be bothered to raise my vigilance against children. But they did. And they killed me. If I know Niklaus, he would have buried this town with me, not gone off into some sappy romance where he just bites the woman he loves. No, he would rescue her after punishing her, then go on to destroy everything. Some things don't change.

As for Rebekah—that girl was always a bit foolish, even from our childhood. If something isn't seen by her, then it doesn't exist, and she puts it in the back of her mind like a child ignoring the monster under the bed.

The one I couldn't care less about? Elijah's reaction. Either he'd go full monster or try to chain Niklaus from killing the doppelganger. Even now, he protects her after she's broken deals with him repeatedly. There was nothing special about the girl.

I bound her with a blood oath because if she doesn't give her blood, she'd be in excruciating pain. And it can't be undone without my blood and my consent. I'm not doing something new.

After dropping Davina off in her room, I told her to decorate it however she wanted—it was hers now. As for magic and school? She could decide how she wanted it arranged. If she didn't want to go to school, I'd respect it, but I did remind her that it's best to at least read what's going on in academics. I had plans to enchant some glasses for that particular reason.

With that handled, I left and headed to the main room, already hearing my siblings gathering. Ah, the sound of family dysfunction.

Nik's eyes were sharp the moment I stepped in. "So, Kol, care to tell me where you were?"

Entirely amused, I remembered my little spar with Marcel. I had only spared the kid for this idiot and our sister. I let out a genuine laugh, answering with a nonchalant, "Here and there."

Nik's eyes shifted to the side, chin pointing at Davina. "And who is this lovely lady?"

"That would be Davina, brother. My new apprentice."

Rebekah's brows shot up as she entered. "My, Kol, you've taken on an apprentice? Will wonders never cease?"

I smirked. "Why, Bekah, I'm sure the word wonder was invented to describe me."

"Aye. Wonderful idiot," she shot back before plopping onto the couch.

Klaus leaned against the table, grinning. "So, you lost the bet, then?"

I scoffed. "Bekah, as far as I remember, I attended your school. I can't imagine myself suffering that much idiocy daily. Maybe once or twice a week, but throughout the whole week? Not possible."

"Very well."

Elijah and Finn entered then, looking all self-important as usual. I glanced at Finn, barely hiding my amusement.

"Why, Finn, you look radiant. Mayhaps it's the hair?"

Rebekah laughed, immediately launching into a tale of how she pranked the hell out of him. I was genuinely not going to touch that.

Finally, I clapped my hands. "Well, gather around, kiddies—here are your presents."

Nik caught the wolf locket I tossed at him, turning it over like he expected it to explode. "And this is?"

"Helps with the shifts. Connects you to your wolf. Might even make you less of an unstable lunatic, though I wouldn't put money on it."

Nik scoffed, classic. "And how do I know it's not cursed?"

Rebekah rolled her eyes, already slipping on her winged horse daylight ring. "Oh please, Kol wouldn't be so obvious if he wanted to curse us. He'd make it something subtle and humiliating, like a slow-burning madness."

I smirked. "Bekah, you wound me. I'd make it fast-burning madness. More entertaining that way."

She lifted the second ring—the one meant for dear Caroline. "And this?"

I grinned. "Oh, you'll love this. The moment she steps into the sun, she's going to sparkle like a bloody diamond. Reversible, of course, but just imagine the reaction."

Bekah burst into laughter. "Oh, I must see this in action."

Elijah, ever the serious one, studied his ring. "A truth-seeker?"

I nodded. "Blood magic. Won't work on us—because let's be honest, that would end very badly—but anyone else? A drop of blood, a simple question, and you'll know if they're lying."

And then there was Finn. He was just staring at the locket I gave him like it offended his entire existence.

"You can live now, brother," I reminded him. "Father's dead. Mother's missing, though she won't stay gone forever. That'll keep you safe until we deal with her. And Sage? Well, you'll have to figure that one out yourself."

Finn clenched his jaw. "And why do you care?"

I sighed, dramatically. "Oh, must everything I do come with an ulterior motive? Maybe I just wanted to be a good brother for once."

Silence. Then Nik snorted. "Right. And I'm the King of France."

I grinned. "I mean, you could be, brother. What's stopping you?"

Nik gave me a look that promised violence. Which, let's be real, was my default interaction with him.

Then, because I knew it was coming, he asked, "And what did you gift yourself, Kol?"

I pulled out a rune-inscribed dagger, spinning it between my fingers. "Oh, just a little insurance policy. Ensures none of you dagger me when I inevitably annoy you all to death."

well the dagger would replace the white oak dagger when i am daggered by it and hence pulling me out of the endless purgatory I am done with that shit and this dagger cant be taken by anyone not even my siblings they would be desiccated as I am pissed and tired of the daggerings

so I decided enough was enough

well this was the result

Bekah snorted. "We'll find a way."

I grinned. "Looking forward to it, dear sister."

And with that, I downed the rest of my drink, satisfied. They might not say it, but they liked the gifts. And if they didn't? Well, too bad. They were stuck with them now.

And with that, I left them to their thoughts, taking Davina with me to my wing of the mansion.

I gestured toward a guest room. "This will be your room. Decorate it however you like; it's yours now."

Davina hesitated. "You're serious?"

I smirked. "Deadly."

She looked around, as if trying to imagine the space as her own.

"As for magic and school," I continued, "that's up to you. If you want to attend, fine. If you don't, I'll respect that. But"—I shot her a knowing look—"I'd recommend at least keeping up with what's happening in academics. I'm planning to enchant some glasses for that particular reason."

She tilted her head. "Magic glasses?"

"Magic glasses."

A small smile tugged at her lips. "That's… kind of cool."

I grinned. "I know."

And with that, I left her to settle in.
