Klaus POV
After witnessing my brother return to his glory days, I knew then and there—Kol would not be chained anymore. In fact, I was certain he had never been chained to begin with.
As we drank, I kept trying to call him, my patience wearing thin with each unanswered ring.
Finally, he picked up.
"Yes, Nik?" he answered with a sigh.
"Where are you, Kol?" I demanded.
"Well, you see, I was bored in that godforsaken town, and I've already dealt with most of Mother's weapons. I'll be back in time for that dance our dear sister has planned."
"And why wasn't I informed?" My fury bled into my words.
A bone-chilling laugh echoed through the receiver, and in that instant, I knew—I shouldn't have asked.
"My, my, Nik. It seems you're either under some mind magic or suffering from delusions," Kol drawled, amusement laced in his tone. "Because as far as Kol Mikaelson is concerned, he isn't someone to be chained or talked down to. Nor am I anyone's pet to come running when called. And I am certainly not a child who needs our family's approval to take a bloody piss. You should be careful, brother. I've thought about this before, but I'll say it outright now—you're all idiots."
He paused, then scoffed.
"Not only did I have to stay in that wretched town, but I was expected to be humble about it?" He clicked his tongue. "That's not how this is going to be."
His voice took on an almost casual lilt as he continued. "Anyway, before you ruined my mood, I'll tell you this—I find it rather intriguing how much magic has progressed in the last century. I'm looking forward to seeing its developments firsthand. So, dear brother, I'll see you at the ball. Or dance. Or whatever it is you lot call it in this era."
Then the line went dead.
With a growl, I threw the phone against the wall and sulkily took a swig from my drink.
"Well, I was wondering when he'd finally snap," Rebekah muttered from the other side of the room.
I turned to her, my expression serious. "What do you mean?"
She arched a brow, leaning against the bar. "Seriously? You all forget the things you've pulled on him when he trusted you. And you expect him not to retaliate? The only reason he agreed to stay behind after promising me he'd attend the school was to punish me. And I know that he knows I was looking forward to spending time with him—without our father breathing down our necks."
Her eyes darkened with something between guilt and frustration. "Did you really think he forgave you for driving a dagger through his heart to raise a child? Or the last time, when you daggered him just because you could?"
I clenched my jaw but said nothing.
"Kol only tolerated us because he needed to understand the world around him and react accordingly. And now that he's gotten what he needed—after delivering his revenge against Mother and her favorite son—he's decided to punish us in return."
She let out a bitter laugh. "If that call had come from Elijah, he wouldn't have even picked up. Kol's had enough of the condescending wisdom our dear brother oh-so-lovingly spews. The only reason he lifted your call is because, despite everything, he still trusts you a little."
Rebekah exhaled sharply and crossed her arms. "Whatever you did to help him gain magic, it worked. But I'd say it's best to leave him alone for now. He'll show up in time for the dance, I'm sure. As for the mayhem he'll bring with him? Well..." She smirked knowingly.
"It's Kol. There's nothing we can do about it."
