Chapter 81: The Charge
"Switch to explosive arrows," Jun commanded, sitting atop his horse as he gazed at the soldiers in the distance, issuing the order without hesitation.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Horses, men, and assassins were instantly massacred at the front as the explosive arrows rained down on them.
"Aaaahhh!"
The Zhao soldiers screamed in alarm, and the criminals at the front met a grisly fate as the arrows exploded beside them, tearing them into a thousand pieces.
Despite appearing outnumbered at first glance, Jun didn't retreat when he saw the enemy infantry advancing toward them with fury in their eyes.
Even though they were outlaws, the criminals operated like an organized unit, each with a specific role within the group: sentinels, commanders, archers, vanguard, and defense. At this point, they resembled soldiers more than bandits.
"Shen, how good is your archery?" Jun asked suddenly, maintaining his calm demeanor.
"It's not bad. Why?" Shen replied, puzzled by Jun's unexpected question.
"Shoot an arrow with a message," Jun said with composed authority as his gaze scanned the bandits and assassins before him.
After a moment of observation, he noticed some subtle details.
"We need Kyou Kai on this battlefield; her target is ahead. Also, when the hand-to-hand combat begins, there will be many wounded needing medical attention. We'll need her battalion of women with medical experience."
"Understood!" Shen nodded, a hint of admiration flashing in his eyes.
The young, seemingly unreadable man in front of him was truly remarkable.
No matter the orders, Jun's focus was always on victory. He never lost his composure and always found a countermeasure to solve the problem. Without realizing it, Shen too forgot his fear, just like everyone else.
He felt that as long as he followed Jun, even the toughest situations could be overcome.
This was Jun's true power—the ability and charm to lead!
"Bring me my bow!" Shen raised his hand, and a soldier quickly brought forward a massive steel bow.
Shen was one of the few generals in Jun's army who had mastered archery to a significant degree.
Once again, Jun had chosen the right person for the task.
The military had provided coal pens to squad leaders of ten men and above for communication during emergencies.
Jun tore a piece of fabric from his sleeves and quickly jotted down a few lines.
Then he wrapped a recovery pill inside and handed it to Shen.
Shen attached Jun's note to the tip of the arrow, drew the bowstring taut, and fired the arrow over a thousand meters. It finally landed on a distant tree.
"Bastards! Are those guys acting arrogantly?" The criminals cursed bitterly upon seeing the arrow fly.
Even though their leader and the military advisor had issued strict orders to maintain formation, they felt the enemy was being haughty by ignoring their presence.
"There's so many of us; why should we be afraid? They'd drown if each of us spat on them once. Isn't the military advisor being overly cautious?"
"Exactly! They're just a bunch of brats! Commanders, my foot. Brothers, let's finish them! Kill the men and take the women. We'll have fun with them later!"
The provocative gesture had left some of the criminals and assassins impatient.
Criminals and assassins were too accustomed to acting without restraint. If their opponents were stronger, they might be forced to follow Li's orders and let him handle the situation.
However, their enemies numbered only in the dozens, with at least a hundred archers. The commanders looked like nothing more than kids to them. At this point, they had already forgotten their initial fear when they heard that Jun and his forces had completely eradicated several dens of criminals.
"Boss, some of our hidden men are starting to get restless," an assassin with a fierce expression pointed out. "They're already forgetting the orders you gave a moment ago. Should I go and contain them?"
"There's no need for that."
The response didn't come from Li but from Boo, the military advisor standing beside him.
"Let them be. They won't learn until they suffer a bit. A few casualties here and there should teach them to remain obedient. At the same time, we can test this group's strength and weaken their forces."
The previous intelligence he had received suggested that one of the commanders possessed deep knowledge of warfare, and none of the criminals who had faced him had escaped.
The men stuck on the slope of Wei hadn't shown anything remarkable, so it was likely that the commander was in the other group.
…
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Jun observed how the battle at the front was being controlled, but his attention shifted to the far right, where more enemies were emerging.
"Shen, take care of them," Jun ordered.
Shen tugged the reins of his horse and moved toward the far right, but at that moment, a hundred more soldiers emerged from the forest, ready to exterminate the enemy.
