Chapter 70: Espionage
Year 243, deep in a forest in Wei, a camp of soldiers with strange flags was settled in this place, seemingly preparing for something very important.
It had only been two years since Jun participated in the last war, meaning many things had happened, such as the new war between Qin and Zhao, which led to great losses. One event, in particular, shook all of China—the death of Ou Ki on the battlefield.
Jun, of course, had no interest in returning—not now, when he was at his peak, not only to fulfill Kyou Kai's revenge but also to claim large territories in Wei without the country noticing.
"Sir, the troops are stationed in the position you requested." A soldier in black clothing approached a man with numerous scars on his face.
Jun, now wearing a larger suit of armor, lay on an ancient branch of a huge tree. His long hair was tied in a ponytail, and his gaze was focused on one thing.
"Good!" Jun was resting under the old tree when he heard those words. He stood up, brushed the dirt off his pants, and leaped onto his horse. With a wave of his hand, he signaled his twenty men to follow him up the mountain.
In an instant, Jun disappeared with his platoon of twenty men. His movements were so decisive that even his current right-hand man, Shen, and the others were left bewildered.
Shen had thought Jun would hesitate, as he had done in the past years, but who would have guessed that he would leave so suddenly?
And just like before, in less than half an hour, Jun had already returned with his troops.
They carried a calm demeanor that didn't suit someone about to massacre an entire village of assassins.
"Is everything ready?" Kyou Kai, dressed in her beautiful white robes, approached Jun with a calm expression. Judging by the way they interacted, it was clear they shared more than just a normal relationship—something much closer.
But their personal affairs didn't concern the soldiers who followed them. They were mere warriors under their command, tasked with eliminating the assassins who had harmed their family.
It was a long-standing tale of revenge, and Jun was prepared to use it to destroy his enemies.
"Everything is ready as planned." Jun nodded with a slight smile, noticing that Kyou Kai seemed more anxious than usual.
"So, is it time?"
"Yes, I'll clear the path for you, and then you'll take care of the rest on your own." Jun would only remove the traps Yuu Ren had set for her.
What Yuu Ren didn't expect was that Jun had manipulated his forces to encircle her and prevent her from escaping. Now, in secret, Jun had control of several cities, and his private army in the area could easily exceed thirty thousand elite soldiers.
How did he achieve this? As always, by helping villages affected by crime and buying as many slaves as he could.
It was that easy to build an army, one that would fight for him at any time, against anyone he commanded.
"Then we'll meet later."
Jun placed his forehead against Kyou Kai's and said, "Remember everything we've learned—make it quick."
"Yes."
…
A few hours later, a masked figure silently hid in the treetops. The figure carefully approached a woman cautiously watching the surroundings and slit her throat with a knife from Yuu village.
Clang!
Life faded from the assassin woman's eyes, and her corpse fell heavily to the ground with a dull thud. But amidst the whisper of the wind in the forest, the sound wasn't particularly noticeable.
And shortly after the assassin woman's body hit the ground, similar dull thuds echoed through the forest one after another.
At that moment, Shen, who was part of the attack group, suddenly spoke: "Sir, it seems someone is following us."
Instinctively, the other assassins cautiously looked back.
"Oh, really? Where is this person?" Jun asked indifferently.
"About fifty steps behind us, hiding in a bush," Shen responded seriously after receiving the information from a tracker.
"I see. Leave them be." Jun waved his hand dismissively.
"But, sir..."
"Calm down, Shen. The figure you saw is most likely a spy sent by my other enemies in our territory. If it were a bandit, do you think they could resist making a move against us?" Jun replied with an obvious question, knowing he had certain enemies he couldn't kill just yet because of how useful they were.
They were near a shared border with Zhao, so these spies could even come from that territory.
Shen pondered for a moment before responding, "I see, so everything is within the lord's expectations."
At those words, Jun simply smiled faintly. After three days of eliminating most of the spies who had followed him to this camp, it would be surprising if none of them had made it to the end.
But knowing that Zhao seemed interested in the assassin villages, it appeared things might take a different turn in the coming days.
