Kaiser of the New World

Live and let rat (196)

At the same time in a different section of the castle, a small rodent was running around the hallways, looking for anything that could be worth listening to so they could get fed again tomorrow.

Remy turned every corner with the precision of a spy that had been trained for decades, their every move so calculated that they didn't even seem like a rat.

Of course, Remy really was a rat, they had just gotten so used to moving stealthily to survive that it was practically second nature to them.

Any sort of shadow was their ally, any crevice in the wall was their friend, any open door was a possibility to gain more information.

Their feet constantly moved, not stopping for even a moment to take a break. This was their only chance after all, if they were able to do well then they could guarantee a steady supply of food.

Remy had managed to escape the icy dungeon through the same way that they had gotten in, through a hole in the wall that connected to one of the many storerooms of the spacious castle.

It was a bit of a tedious journey, mainly because of the much bigger creatures that lived in the walls of the lower levels of the castle, but they managed.

After turning another corner, Remy stopped in their tracks and quickly retreated back the way they came. After a few seconds, they sneakily peeked their head around the corner.

Two extremely tired looking maids were walking in the opposite direction. Both of their maid outfits were disheveled, and both of them had some strange markings on their exposed calves. They were in the midst of a conversation, so Remy slowly started catching up to them in order to hear them.

And to their luck, this gossip might be juicy enough to secure some of that incredible tasting bread and that heavenly tasting juice that their guardian was supplying.

"Her Majesty has been getting increasingly upset in these last few days. I have no idea why, I just hope that she doesn't take it out on us this time."

The maid beside the one that spoke sighed before scratching one of the bruises on her arm, a small grimace on her face.

"Last time was terrible. It was two weeks ago, and I still have all of the bruises. I don't know why she was so upset, I just hope she takes it out on His Majesty this time, we both know how much of a pig he is."

The first maid nodded in response.

"These outfits are a testament to that. So unpractical, especially when we have to venture into the city for supplies. Do you have any idea the amount of times that I've been mistaken for a prosti-"

Remy stopped listening there. Their guardian wouldn't be happy with this information, it was useless!

They needed something bigger, they needed something more valuable, they needed something so mind boggling that it would secure them multiple days of food, not just one day.

After leaving those two maids, Remy continued scouring the castle for any information that could be of value.

They went in every crevice, trying their hardest to hide from the creatures of the walls as they traveled.

They found themselves inside a rather small library, standing on top of an extremely dusty book in the process. The book was called '50 shades of Turqoise' and was written by someone called 'E.Q.A.V', another useless bit of information that they had accidently found.

Although Remy was a little curious what turqoise meant. It must have been a type of food if there was so many shades of it.

This time, Remy exited through an open door rather than a crack in the wall. This section of the castle was the worst for their safety. The walls were infested by wall creatures much larger than themselves, they would not hesitate to pounce on them if they got the chance.

Traversing the hallway as a proper spy once more, Remy caught sight of something that could potentially prove worthwhile to follow.

That annoying blond haired man was roaming the castle. Remy had seen them a couple of times, but they didn't like their scent so they always just left when they spotted them.

There was also a little girl walking beside him. She had gorgeous blonde hair, styled with way too many curls for it to be worth it. Their skin was incredibly pale though, and incredibly dirty at the same time. In one hand, they clutched a tattered stuffed animal, their other hand was hanging limply by their side.

Castillian scowled as he glanced down at Petunia, moreso glancing down at the stuffed teddy.

"What have I told you about walking around with that piece of rubbish. If you want a toy, just tell me and I will get you it. I have no idea how many times I've thrown that thing away, but it always comes back to find you.

Unless you're the one that goes searching. Tell me, sweetie, do you go searching for that trash against my orders?"

Petunia shook her head vigorously, her grip tightening on her teddy in the process. Remy wasn't sure what was happening, but they were sure that their nose was definitely right about the annoying blond man.

"No. Teddy always comes back for me. They're all I have left."

Castillian scowled again and quickly lunged to grab the teddy out of Petunia's hands, but the girl somehow managed to react in time and shift her body, making the King swipe at the air.

"You ungrateful brat! Am I not enough for you, is your father not enough? And what about your poor mother? I know that she is not around much, but she still cares for you."

Petunia, who had been putting up with this for months at this point, finally felt something snap.

She had been feeling like this when her old tormentor, that red haired boy that apparently knew her real father, finally stood up to her 'mother' and 'father'. They had been at multiple of her 'training sessions' but had never said anything.

But they still stood up to them in the end. Petunia wanted to he strong like that. Even though she hadn't seem them in weeks, she was sure that he was still somewhere in the castle, still defying her 'mother' and 'father's' wills.

'My mommy is dead, and you're not my daddy."

Castillian's face started growing even redder than it already was before he finally grabbed Petunia by her arm and started dragging her through the castle.

"It seems that you need to spend some more time getting disciplined. Let's see if you're still able to disrepsect me once I'm finished."

Before Remy could react, the two of them had already rounded a corner and vanished.

That encounter seemed pretty valuable. Maybe their guardian would want to know about the child, that could be something that could earn him a little food.

But just as Remy was about to return and tell their guardian what they had seen, they caught sight of something else.

An attractive, blue haired guard wearing a pristine white uniform walking directly towards them.

Ezekial had the same blank expression on their face that they always had. As he walked, he didn't even notice the rat hiding behind one of the many doors he had walked past.

Remy peeked their head out after a few moments, seeing Ezekial take a left around a corner.

Dashing out, Remy began following behind the blue haired swordsman, feeling like this could be their big score. They caught up to the blue haired man just as they turned another corner.

It was a little hard for Remy to keep up without being spotted because the man was walking so quick, it was almost unnatural how quick they were walking.

Remy followed the man for a few minutes before they finally reached a rather dreary looking staircase, descending into the depths of the castle.

Ezekial began walking down, unaware of the rat following behind him.

Soon, they reached a section of the castle that Remy had been to a couple of times, but never really explored. It was honestly kind of scary, there wasn't much light, the vibe felt off, it just felt way too ominous for anything good to come out of it.

Ezekial ended up reaching a dead end, making Remy wonder what was about to happen, only they were shocked when the blue haired man walked through the wall. There wasn't even a painting, they just walked straight through the wall.

After waiting for a moment, Remy soon followed, wondering what could possibly be on the other side.

Walking through the wall felt kind of strange. It was like they hadn't walked through the wall, but had been brought to somewhere else entirely. Only there was one thing on the other side of the wall, making Remy confused.

A gargantuan double door made of solid rock. It looked way too heavy for someone like Ezekial to have opened, only they had to have because they were not in front of it.

Even though Remy wanted to go in, there was one problem with that.

They had no way to get inside.

Remy attempted to squeeze in the gap in the door to no avail before looking around its edges for anyway in.

Minutes passed, and Remy kept failing when it came to finding a way in.

However, Remy soon stopped trying to find a way in after the floor and walls started trembling.

A horrifying, beastly, ghastly roar came from the other side of the door. Remy had never heard anything like it, it was like there was some terrifying beast on the other side.

The hall continued to shake violently, even the door was reacting to the roar. Little bits of it chipped off and fell to the ground, nearly hitting Remy in the process.

Terrified, Remy turned around and ran away as quick as their little legs could carry them. This was certainly enough information to make the guardian happy.

And with that, Remy ran away, unable to find out what could have possibly been on the other side of that door.
