Ch. 20
After spending time loitering in the training room, it was time to go home. We called the nanny to send Liuspel off, and we left the mansion.
Looking at the sky, the clouds were gathering, making the weather gloomy.
“It looks like it’s about to snow…”
The capital, located in the eastern part of the Empire, was a place where the change of the four seasons was distinct, so it was a neighborhood where the flow of seasons could be well felt.
Hearing my words, Zion and Mostin laughed.
“Belladi! You’re going to Zion’s villa this winter, right? You couldn’t go last year because you were taking care of your mother!”
“I’m going to be really busy around that time.”
“Busy? Well, you have been busy with managing the mansion these days.”
“But don’t you take it easy in the winter? We’ve just renovated our villa…”
I smiled at Mostin and Zion’s words.
“The time is coming soon.”
“What time?”
The time to send my father away from the capital.
I didn’t answer but just smiled. At my smile, Mostin looked at me suspiciously.
“That smile means you’re up to something… don’t plan something fun by yourself; include us too!”
“Well, I’ll try it first, and if it’s fun, I’ll let you in.”
“Oh, saying it like that makes me more curious. Tell us~”
“Hm, the more you beg, the less I want to tell you.”
With that, I climbed into my family’s carriage.
“I’m heading back. If you want to have another sparring session, challenge me anytime, Mostin.”
“Sure, next time, I’ll last longer!”
“I’ll set our class schedule and let you know, Zion.”
“Anytime is fine with me, so just let me know.”
“Have a good evening, everyone.”
I said, straightening my posture. Then the servant of Fredo Duchy, who was waiting, closed the carriage door.
Soon the carriage started moving. Because it got dark quickly in winter, there were no people on the street. Thanks to that, we could arrive at Alton mansion faster than when we left.
‘I wanted to brag about how well I handle the sword now, but thanks to Zion and Mostin, I got to show off.’
Starting next year, I would gradually reveal my skills to others. I entered the entrance with a more cheerful heart than usual.
Then Emily approached me.
“Lady Belladi.”
“Why do you look like that? Is something wrong?”
“Well…”
Emily whispered to me quietly.
As soon as I heard those words, I discarded my pleasant mood and changed my direction.
The place I headed to was the greenhouse in the annex.
As I headed there without hesitation, Rover, who was pacing in front of the annex, greeted me with a relieved expression.
“L-Lady Belladi! You’re here!”
Behind Rover, I saw the tightly closed greenhouse door.
Through the crack in the door, I could faintly hear the sound of music, which made my expression sour. It was the symphony that Mother used to listen to with Meldor.
Rover, who was standing next to me, hurriedly tried to explain as he saw my expression.
“The servants and I tried to stop him, but he was so insistent…!”
“I’ll handle this, so you all can leave.”
I said this and opened the closed door.
As the door opened, the music became louder. I walked inside, piercing through the sound that hurt my ears.
The scenery inside the greenhouse hadn’t changed much since then. The only noticeable difference was that there wasn’t a single flower blooming, which used to bloom beautifully.
Well, it was natural since I was planning to tidy up after sending my father away from this mansion.
The barren greenhouse, much like the season outside, was dark because the lights weren’t turned on. The faint light that came through the large windows was enough, so I didn’t mind and walked inside the greenhouse.
Soon I could see a familiar face.
“Meldor.”
Meldor was sitting on the sofa with his eyes closed, without any response. It was the sofa where he and Mother often sat together when she was alive.
I strode towards him and turned off the phonograph next to Meldor. Then the loud music that was piercing my ears stopped.
Only after the silence returned did Meldor open his eyes.
“Why did you stop the music without permission? Turn it back on immediately.”
“Who gave you permission to be here? And what’s with this phonograph? Don’t you remember what Father said? I’m in charge of this place now.”
At my words, Meldor frowned.
“This used to be Mother’s space.”
“You’re the one who ruined it. It’s mine now.”
“Ha, is that so?”
Meldor scoffed and glared at me fiercely.
“Then turn this place into a space for enjoying music. You convinced Father by saying you’d make me understand, didn’t you?”
My expression hardened at those words. Meldor chuckled, seeing my reaction.
“Mother’s favorite hobbies were tending to this greenhouse and listening to music. So, if you decorate this place for music appreciation, I’ll understand.”
“I’ll handle it, so enjoy your music in your room.”
“Is that an order, Belladi Alton?”
Meldor’s voice lowered as he stared straight into my eyes.
“Stop interfering with the memories of Mother and me. If you want to play, do it in your own domain.”
Memories of Mother and Meldor…
A crooked smile appeared on my lips.
Meldor knew well how to touch my reverse scale.
I suppressed my rising anger and looked at Meldor.
“Father entrusted this place to me. Are you going to defy Father’s words?”
No matter what threats he made, the owner of this house was still Father.
At my words, Meldor made a grimace and stood up from the sofa.
“You’re going to change it to your liking after all? Do you think Father will let that happen?”
‘Of course, he won’t let it.’
Therefore, I was waiting to fix it after I kicked Father out.
Hiding my inner thoughts, I responded to his hostile gaze with a sneer.
“Meldor, it seems like you’re sensitive because Mother’s birthday is approaching… don’t take it out on me. I’m not going to be your punching bag anymore.”
“Who said I was taking it out on you!”
“Didn’t you just a few days ago? Have you already forgotten?”
A few days ago, I ran into Meldor, who had just finished his training, in the hallway of the mansion.
As soon as Meldor saw me, he sneered like this.
-Some people train day and night, while others leisurely ride horses.
-If you’re upset about it, finish your training quickly and go see Alexander. Don’t blame me for your slow progress.
-Grrr! You’re just a parasite who does nothing!
Shouting like that, Meldor threw the wooden sword he was holding at me. Of course, I caught it easily and handed it back.
“I won’t be returning your wooden sword like that anymore.”
I would break it into pieces.
At my words, Meldor’s expression twisted. Before he could respond, I spoke first.
“Go back to your room now.”
“Why should I? Do you think you can control me?”
Meldor looked at me fiercely and laid back on the sofa. Seeing that, I turned around with a smirk.
“Really? If you’re going to throw a tantrum like that, then you can live here, Meldor. I’m going back to my room.”
It was his loss to stay here, anyway.
I was wondering what Meldor’s intention was when he suddenly went to the greenhouse, but if he was just going to wallow in misery with a phonograph, I didn’t care.
As I walked towards the door without hesitation, I heard Meldor’s voice screaming behind me.
Ignoring it, I left the greenhouse, where Emily and Rover were waiting for me outside. I said to them briefly.
“Meldor seems to be just throwing a tantrum, so let’s leave him and go back to our duties.”
“Yes, Lady Belladi.”
“Understood!”
I headed back to my room. Walking down the long hallway, I recalled the attempts I made over the past six months.
I had also tried to have a conversation with Meldor. The reason Meldor ignored and disliked me was clear.
He was tormented by training and classes most of the day, while I had relatively more freedom.
‘From Meldor’s perspective, it probably seemed like he was studying so hard, and I was playing every day.’
Therefore, he treated me rudely and spoke harshly.
He was cunning enough not to speak rudely to me in front of Mother and Father.
He grumbled or ignored me, but he controlled his behavior to avoid throwing things or using magic.
Because of that, Mother always said this to me when I asked for help.
-It seems like Meldor is having a hard time. Belladi, you’re his older sister, so can’t you accept your brother’s whining?
I reluctantly agreed back then, but I had no intention of doing so anymore.
I thought that since Meldor had matured, we could understand each other through conversation…
‘It was a foolish hope that was unlike me.’
He provoked my anger even before we could have a calm conversation. Every time, my fists clenched in frustration, but I held back desperately.
If I physically retaliated against Meldor and he tattled to Father, I could lose my authority to manage the mansion.
That was how precarious my position was.
‘What kind of conversation can you have with someone who’s looked down on you for years?’
There was also a way to tell Father about Meldor’s atrocities. But that would be just like going back to square one.
Father would likely blame me first upon hearing what I had to say. After that, he would give Meldor a simple warning.
But no special punishment would be imposed. Then, Meldor would take out his frustration on me in retaliation, and I wouldn’t be able to stand it anymore and would end up grabbing him.
If Meldor reported that to Father, the same conclusion as before would be reached.
As I pondered this dilemma, I came to a simple conclusion.
‘In the end, what I fear the most is the relationship between Meldor and Father.’
As long as we lived in the same mansion, Meldor could easily get close to Father.
If that happened, I would never be able to create the outcome I wanted.
‘That’s why I’ve been waiting until now.’
Mother’s birthday was approaching.
That was when the original story began.
‘Soon, I’ll be able to send Father away from the capital.’
The physical distance that would form between the once close father and son.
With Meldor left alone without the shield that was Father, it would be as good as having him fall right into my grasp.
“I’m really looking forward to that moment, Meldor.”
Yes, it wouldn’t be long now.
Thinking of that moment made me chuckle to myself.
