Chapter 14: The Young Sorceress's Hidden Motives?
That evening, Sophia's promised video call arrived right on schedule.
Lucas had just finished showering and was drying his hair with a hairdryer.
After connecting.
Sophia's round face immediately filled the entire screen, her cheeks puffed out as she spoke in her sweet voice, "Lucas, Lucas, what are you doing?"
"If you can't tell, I'm drying my hair."
"Lucas, did you miss me today?"
"Why would I miss you?"
"Because I really missed Lucas!"
...
"Lucas, there are so many cicadas at grandma's house! They're so noisy and lively! We went cicada hunting today, and grandpa made me a big net, but I couldn't catch any. Am I really that silly?"
"Haven't you always been silly?"
"Oh yeah. Lucas, there's this chubby boy in the village who wanted to play with me, but I didn't want to. Then he tried to bully me, so I beat him up, and he cried really hard. Lucas, did I do the right thing?"
Lucas finished drying his hair and looked at the silly girl on screen holding her phone and giggling stupidly. He sighed, "No, you didn't."
"Huh?"
Sophia froze, her big eyes showing pure confusion as her face fell, "Why not?"
Lucas lay down on his bed, resting his head on the pillow, "You should have beaten him until he was too scared to cry, like how I dealt with Blake."
Sophia's face lit up with joy as she nodded with adorable cluelessness, "Oh, oh, I get it now. If he bothers me again, I'll keep beating him up, hehe."
They say you become like those you spend time with. After hanging around Lucas for over a month, between his subtle influence and careful guidance.
The formerly timid silly girl had now learned to stand up for herself.
Lucas was quite satisfied.
"Lucas, I haven't paid my friendship fee today. Am I still your good friend?"
Sophia seemed to have endless things to say, her face scrunching up with worry, "You won't make other girls your good friends if they pay the friendship fee, right?"
Lucas replied wearily, "Where would all these other girls come from? It's only been one day of vacation."
As if triggering a keyword, Sophia immediately pouted, "Only one day? But it feels like it's been so long!"
"What's wrong, not happy at your grandmother's?"
"No, I'm very happy! It's just that time passes so slowly without Lucas here, but when Lucas is around, time flies by so fast. It's really strange!"
Lucas: ...
"Sophia, your thoughts are dangerous."
He said seriously, "I need to remind you, we're just good friends. These thoughts of yours aren't appropriate."
Sophia instantly froze, nodding dumbly with a rather unintelligent expression.
"Yeah, Lucas and I are just good friends! I don't have any other thoughts, I'm too silly to think of anything else."
Lucas: ...
Then, Sophia told him about everything else, from breakfast to catching cicadas in the afternoon, chasing dragonflies, picking corn - every little detail, her little mouth chattering endlessly as if it would never stop.
It was making Lucas drowsy.
Until an elder's voice came from her end, reminding Sophia it was bedtime.
Only then did the silly girl reluctantly end the video call.
Lucas looked at the call duration.
2 hours 45 minutes 32 seconds.
Whatever else, he had to acknowledge its effectiveness as a sleeping aid.
Taking advantage of his drowsiness, he drifted off to sleep.
The next day.
To Lucas's surprise.
Luna's father brought her to visit again.
Perhaps that credit card was indeed meant as a thank-you gift, but since Lucas's family hadn't accepted it.
This suit-wearing father came personally.
The middle-aged man carried himself with the distinctive air of a successful businessman, handling social interactions smoothly and thoroughly. According to his introduction, he was the chairman of a major real estate group.
Quite famous in North Bay, apparently.
It surprised both his parents.
After much polite back-and-forth, the chairman left some gifts and hurried away.
As for Luna, she stood to the side throughout.
Still beautiful as ever, but silent and expressionless, not at all like a child, cold as ice.
Luna didn't leave with her father, choosing to stay instead.
Just like yesterday, she followed Lucas around.
When Lucas went to exercise in the park, she followed.
Her pretty face attracted the attention of the elderly folks, who gathered around praising her as someone's little darling, saying she looked like a porcelain doll.
Seeing the doll-like girl following Lucas everywhere.
They teased about what a lucky boy he was, having such a little wife following him.
Lucas didn't mind.
But Luna's big eyes sparkled with a strange light.
Gradually, they went from complete silence to being able to exchange a few normal sentences.
At noon, when Lucas returned home for lunch, she followed.
She somehow produced another credit card and placed it on the table, saying sweetly to Sarah, "Ma'am, this is for the meal."
Sarah naturally wouldn't accept it, it was just an extra portion for a little girl.
After lunch.
Lucas took a nap.
Luna sat quietly on the sofa watching TV.
When Lucas woke up, she followed him again.
It was very strange.
Though they'd only met a few times.
Luna seemed to have attached herself to him.
Lucas couldn't figure out why.
Sarah was also puzzled.
In the afternoon, the chauffeur came to pick up Luna.
Before getting in the car, she waved to Lucas, "See you tomorrow, Lucas."
Lucas: ...
That evening, as usual, the silly girl's video call came right on time, and he drifted off to sleep amid her endless chatter.
Time passed this way.
Nearly a week went by.
Luna came over every day.
Lucas gradually grew familiar with this beautiful girl.
Actually, the reason he initially didn't like her was because she always spoke in a commanding tone.
After these days of interaction.
He came to understand.
This girl was simply straightforward.
She directly expressed both happiness and unhappiness.
Her words weren't meant to be commanding from above, she really just wanted to give Lucas a ride home.
As for why she particularly attached herself to him.
Lucas still hadn't figured it out.
Another morning came.
Warm sunlight streamed through the window, casting golden patches on the floor, while a gentle breeze stirred the curtains, bringing the fresh scent of morning dew.
Lucas opened his bleary eyes to find a delicate face hovering above him.
Luna lay on the edge of his bed, resting her chin in her hands, her voice soft yet clear.
"Lucas, time to get up."
Her face had long lost the coldness from their first meeting, her bright eyes now sparkling with joy.
Lucas, wearing only boxer shorts: ...
"Please step out for a moment while I get dressed, thank you."
Lucas spoke helplessly from under his blanket, seeing she had no intention of leaving.
Luna wore a black and white checkered dress today. Though still very young, she somehow managed to look tall and slim, with a refined waist, every bit the little beauty.
Her hair was tied up, with a long ponytail falling to her waist.
Hearing his words, she stood up, lips curved slightly upward, and tiptoed lightly out of the room.
[The young sorceress seems to have ulterior motives regarding you. You ponder this but still can't figure out her intentions. You can only sigh at how treacherous the world has become, that even young sorceresses have been corrupted by the mundane world. How sad, how lamentable.]
Lucas frowned slightly.
...
