Chapter 10: Episode 9
Mary pushed the metal gate of the bungalow. She stood in front of the old structure and paused as she reminisced about how it was built and what it had become: the vine climbing on the pillars of the verandah, the green moss that covered half of the roof, and the aging woods, and the young herself: the 20-year-old stepped foot on this very grounds for the first time. Despite everything that has changed it looked like it was holding up well.
~~~~~~~
"She's upstairs." A young woman walking past Mary in the hallway gestured. She pointed to the upper floor with a book in her hands, she twirled the wine in her glass, and left barefoot on the wooden floor, her long black silk robe tightened around her waist and dragged behind her.
~~~~~~~
Mary walked up the wooden stairs dreading every step, she paused in between the stairs glaring at the pictures that were hung on the wall, as though she was taking her time. Waves of memories flooded her mind. Her ears ringed and all the sound around her muted.
*****Death whispers*****
Mary took a few steps down as felt a bit out of balance, her eyes blurred, she felt around the place to get a hold of something.
"102 and counting."
"Death. Too much death."
"All of them."
"You did it!!!
*****shrieking****
She gasped for air, grabbed her chest, and let out a breath.
~~~~~~~~
"Alva." An old voice called out to Mary. "You bought them in here." The woman slightly turned her head.
Mary stood in the middle of the doorway in a daze, she stared blankly at the woman sitting in her wheelchair.
"I can't always control them." Mary's voice broke slightly and her eyes glistened.
"Yet I can't see what's on your, I regret teaching you that trick." The woman's voice unchanged.
"It's an old trick i would have learned it one way or the other." Mary's body straightened.
"Do you use it on her?" The woman gestured for Mary to come near her.
"She's a child."
"You keep saying that like it's gonna stop what's coming for her, we cannot change our paths."
Mary took heavy steps following the light coming from the huge window.
She kissed the woman on the cheeks and glanced down at the garden.
The woman pulled Mary's arm suggesting to sit on the sofa near her.
"You seek something, no wonder you're here."
Mary looked down at her fingers beginning to scratch.
"A new magic."
"Yes, a conjurer."
"There are no conjurers on this land, not since they came for us, yet I felt it. Not from here something old and something powerful.
"What is it?" Mary, curious.
"it's very old it carries a stench of something or someone not from here, but whoever did it was skilled or learned from someone very powerful."
"How can you be sure."
"Oh, I haven't sensed this kind of power being used by an immature in a long time, because the last time someone unskilled did it. It became unconcealable, the entire continent became unpleasant."
"Grandma?" Both women who were engaging in the conversation turned their heads.
"Lalia.. come in.." An old woman turned her wheels with a little excitement.
"Shes here for the summer."
"Hi, Lyra." Mary gave a faint smile.
Lyra stood in the doorway looking at two women, she removed her wired headphones from her right ear.
(come on, don't leave me, it can't be that easy babe)
(If you believe me I guess I'll get on a plane)
****Left ear****
She pressed her lips trying to create a smile.
"Madam Chancellor." Lyra slightly nodded her head.
"She's your Auntie, child! We don't politics here." The old woman said with a strict tone.
"You should come in," Mary added.
The two gave awkward exchanges.
"No, I'm hungry I'll be in the kitchen, Grandma, aunti-." Lyra gave a nod.
"Well, you should stay for dinner." The old woman wheeled herself trying to leave the room.
"No, I should go."
"Why, girls will be delighted, except for maybe one." The old woman was adamant.
"I have a meeting." Mary grabs the back pushing the chair gently.
"Ah.. you and your politics... I just hope you don't forget who you are."
************
David leaned toward the people sitting on either side of the conference table.
"So that's it, that's all we have." David cracked/twisted his neck to relieve stress, he pressed the edge of the tables with his palms. "After all that." He turned back to the giant LED screen, and folded his arms.
"Yes, that's about it I guess," Chump added as he looked at the other parties that were present in the room.
"What about the Conjurer." David continued staring at the screen.
"Recently got into the country, probably." Ella stretched her mouth with uncertainty.
"What do you mean?" As he turned to his team.
"No record of her in the system, that detects all SPNs in our country. Also, in the OOTW." Ella concluded her statement with confidence.
''OOT-! Since when did you collaborate with those Elitist bitches!
"Sorry about that Boss, your grandma-.'' Chump turned the chair towards his Boss.
"I don't have Grandmother."
"Wait, then, who?"
"The CCTV, footage doesn't show anything at all, almost like somebody placed it there just before we got there it's fairly new." Ella cut off her brother. She walked to the front of the table and put a stack of files near her Boss, my source tells me that there haven't been any Conjurer in this country for a long time now. She walked off to the side and leaned on the wall with her arms crossed.
David rubbed both sides of his temple. "This is not gonna help us at all."
"Not, not all." Chump jumped from his chair and grabbed the remote. "The models used were launched only 3 weeks ago, so last time I checked only a few stores were carrying it, so I tracked it to the day it was launched, narrowed it down to 3 stores, and. No one bought it, checked the other days 3 people bought it in 4 days, it's quite expensive, one of the expensive models right now. Just regular folks no criminal backgrounds nothing suspicious." Chump pressed the remote showing a series of pictures on the screen.
"But on the 5th day." He paused for a bit, and pulled up a picture of a girl, covering her face with a hoody.
"Look too young to be a professional. It could be parents' money, used cash. Wrote Amy D on the register, put her on our system, no results. But!" Chump walk around with smugness.
*****Missing Persons Report*****
13 year Old Amelia Dary
"And voila!"
"Uk!"
"Yes."
"3 years ago?"
"Trace her from all footage from the street, got on the bus got off at the City Centre."
"So, she just disappeared in some alley."
"Well, she tried to but, look who picks her up 15 minutes from the City Centre, black Navigator."
"There you are motherfucker, Bos-." Chump zooms in on the face of a man in the front passenger seat from the street cam, he looks at his boss only to find his blank face like he just saw a ghost or a dead lover that came back to life. He looked at his sister.
"What!" Ella muttered to her brother. " Is that the man boss?" She added trying to get her Boss' attention.
"Yes, that's him, it's him." David's voice lowered, and his eyes glistened, as he stared at the man on the screen who looked directly at the cam as though asking to come find him, his chin high in confidence.
"Should we share this footage with the Supreme House, Boss?" Chump trying to read Boss' facial expressions, not wanting to get yelled at."
David put his hands on the glass table trying to support his body, his head dropped trying not to meet eyes with the people in the room. "No, not yet. Did you get the license Chump?"
"I did, it's a fake, but I'm talking to some Guys, I don't it's gonna be hard to find a Lincoln with a fake license."
"Okay, good that's something, and what about the reading."
"All the parties in the room looked at the woman in the corner busying herself with something.
"Nika." Ella slightly turned her head.
"It's finished." Nika started walking around the room passing tiny bottles containing some liquid.
"What the heck is this!" Chump took a bottle closer to the window to get a better look at the substance.
"After all that magic it's easy to stay in the delirium. Boss." Nika passes one to David.
"I don't need it."
"I think you should, you almost had a panic attack just now, it's for the nerves." Nika pressed her lips thinking she might have overstepped.
Ella and Chump made faces.
"Still, it looked suspicious."
"I don't need potions to kill you, Chump." Nika with a creepy smile.
"This better worked. All those people looked so real, it's so creepy." Ella felt a chill running through her body, she paused for a bit a chucked the entire thing.
"Okay, that's taste like nothing." She smacked her mouth.
"Easy taste for kids."
"It's tasteless," Chump added. "Also if you had tried to talk to them, maybe we would have found out sooner."
"No, she wouldn't have, it is old and powerful, conjuring dead people from nothing but memories of the past that stayed in place without any object of the deceased is powerful magic."
"Oh." Ella shook her entire body.
"But, whoever used it that day was not as skilled, she couldn't hold it off for long," Nika added.
"Yeah right, like she didn't throw you off to the ceiling." Chump trying to mock Nika.
....Nika dead stares.....
"Okay.'' David, tired of his employees.
"Ella you're going to Uk."
"What? Why her?"
"Because you need to find me that Navigator. Also I will be better if a woman talk around a grieving family."
"Understood Boss," Ella grinned at her brother.
"That will be all."
"Okay!" Chump slapped palms on the table as he stood up.
"Except Nika, I need to speak with you."
Chump frowned his mouth at Nika.
Nika rolled her eyes.
"My dear sister you're coming with me we also need to talk."
Chump put his arm around his sister's neck and dragged her along with him.
Ella punches Chump in the stomach
"Ah".. from the hallway.
