Chapter 13: Task System
Early the next morning, a slow and steady knocking sound came from outside the door.
There was no hint of urgency, which gave a pleasant impression.
Minamoto Sōjun was already awake.
He only needs to sleep for four hours a day to fully recover his energy.
By this time, he had already completed his daily jujutsu power refining task.
He tidied up his mood and became cheerful again.
Opening the door, he saw a tall woman leaning against the doorframe.
A katana with a sheath was hanging by her waist.
She was dressed in the standard uniform for support personnel—brown leather shoes on her feet, black trousers, a white shirt, and a black single-breasted suit with three neat buttons that covered the lower part of her red tie.
The outfit was mostly black, but the cuffs and collar revealed a distinct white, adding a mature and composed touch.
The suit was undeniably professional.
Her hair was tied in a high ponytail, and her face, though adorned with light makeup, had an elegant, serious expression with slightly furrowed brows that gave her a sharp, stern look.
When she saw the door open, she immediately stood up straight and flashed a business-like smile. "Good morning, I'm Mishima Shiko, your exclusive assistant."
"Hello." Minamoto Sōjun nodded politely.
Between bounty sorcerers and support personnel, there was no hierarchy, but they were colleagues of equal standing.
Mutual respect was emphasized in the manual, and it was a key point.
Mishima Shiko, seeing his friendly attitude, visibly relaxed.
Her collaborations with other sorcerers over the years had not been pleasant. The last smooth cooperation had been several years ago, and that person had long since died at the hands of a cursed spirit.
She had to become a temporary assistant, moving between different sorcerers, and had met many eccentric individuals.
Some were arrogant and self-important; others lacked ambition, going through the motions; many were careless, insidious, and liked to act on their own.
Most of these people were dead.
But don't think that the remaining ones were normal. Those who had completed a large number of tasks and survived were often even more extreme or mad.
She looked up at him—black hair hanging loosely, a strand circling and casually tied behind her head, dressed very casually.
Though polite, she exuded a relaxed demeanor.
She hoped that this person in front of her would be a bit more normal.
Mishima Shiko sighed inwardly. She didn't want to have to tolerate another troublesome person during a task.
Recollecting her thoughts, she handed over a hard card.
Minamoto Sōjun watched her, noticing her changing expressions and odd facial expressions. Was he showing his feelings that clearly?
He reached out and took the card, which was his employee ID.
At the top, there was a logo of Tokyo's Jujutsu High, a black background with a white spiral design, and next to it was written "Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu High School [Temporary Employee ID]."
The number was 060711.
Name: Minamoto Sōjun
Born: July 11, 1991
This ID certifies that the above employee is a temporary staff member of this school.
At the bottom was a barcode, and to the right was Minamoto Sōjun's photo, with a number [2] printed on the top left corner.
It was all basic information about Minamoto Sōjun.
The number should be composed by joining the year of joining and birthdate.
Jujutsu sorcerers were rare, so there shouldn't be many duplicates, right?
Minamoto Sōjun looked at the ID, and a strange thought crossed his mind.
"If there are duplicates, the later ones will get a number one higher," Mishima Shiko suddenly spoke, noticing his odd gaze. She explained, "Many newcomers have this question; I asked the same thing to my seniors back then."
Minamoto Sōjun nodded slightly, gathering a lot of information about her just from their brief interaction.
First, this assistant had at least level 2 strength in his perception. In the jujutsu world, that made her a powerful sorcerer.
The muscles she unintentionally revealed were still in a state of post-workout swelling, so she had probably just finished exercising.
Up to this point, even in the relatively safe environment of the Jujutsu High, her hand had remained near the hilt of her sword, ready to draw it at any moment—her vigilance was strong.
Her likes and dislikes were clearly displayed on her face, showing a lot of mental changes.
Minamoto Sōjun hadn't been paying close attention, but she was just that easy to read. Of course, it could also be a disguise, but that wasn't really his concern.
Not all assistants were weak or had poor talent. Some sorcerers simply liked being assistants, and there were always some who disliked fighting.
Minamoto Sōjun didn't have much curiosity about this.
"I'm Minamoto Sōjun, a level 2 jujutsu sorcerer. I don't have anything I particularly like or dislike." His gaze was calm as he introduced himself briefly, "Is there anything I need to be aware of for our upcoming cooperation?"
Mishima Shiko shook her head, "Apart from missions where we must go together, everything else is up to me."
Minamoto Sōjun carefully looked over the points to note.
What he was actually asking was whether there were any personal quirks to be aware of since they would be working together for a while. But since she didn't mention anything, Minamoto Sōjun decided to treat her like normal.
"I'll move nearby for convenience," Mishima Shiko said, changing the topic. "Next, would you like me to introduce you to the different departments at Jujutsu High?"
Minamoto Sōjun didn't mind, and it was a good opportunity to get familiar with the surroundings. He followed her as she walked through Jujutsu High and listened to her explain the benefits and perks available to bounty sorcerers.
Mishima Shiko pointed to a building. "The cafeteria is free, and the serving hours are from 6:00 to 23:00."
The two of them had breakfast together.
Next, Mishima Shiko took him to the training ground, or rather, to Field 5.
"Jujutsu sorcerers need to develop techniques and train their skills. Besides the courtyard that comes with the dorms, Jujutsu High also provides dedicated training grounds."
"There are five fields in total, and the first three are for students, while the latter two are for bounty sorcerers."
Minamoto Sōjun looked down at Field 5. It was spacious enough for two standard football matches and had a circular running track at its center, surrounded by rooms for equipment storage.
It was close to his place.
They walked down the steps and onto the field.
Outside the track, there was a large open space, and at the four corners were large sports halls.
"These halls are divided by function: energy refining, equipment training, martial arts practice, and technique development. The venues are open to the public. If you want to train, you can choose any training room." Mishima Shiko introduced each one.
"Although the usage rate is low, someone still maintains and cleans the grounds daily."
She spoke as they walked, taking Minamoto Sōjun to the other side of the field, passing through large empty spaces, and finally arriving at a cluster of buildings.
"This is where bounty sorcerers do their business." She gestured to the buildings.
"On the left is the Cursed Warehouse, where curses are contained, and you can exchange cursed tools, cursed objects, talismans, and barrier techniques... Anything you want, as long as you have the money."
She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice, "There's said to be a deeper level of the Cursed Warehouse, but it's not open to the public."
They reached a warehouse-like building, and Minamoto Sōjun carefully inspected it, but he couldn't find an entrance.
At that moment, Mishima Shiko stepped forward, placing her hand on the wall and gently rubbing it.
A flash of black light appeared and quickly disappeared.
The Cursed Warehouse still showed no signs of changing.
"The Cursed Warehouse is protected by Lord Ten-gen's barrier. Without permission, it's very hard to enter."
Hard, not impossible.
Minamoto Sōjun had a feeling she was hinting at something, but he didn't sense any malice or negative emotions.
They walked a few more steps to the tallest building in the area. Upon entering, Minamoto Sōjun realized it was only a three-story building, with the central hall towering over the others.
Mishima Shiko seemed proud. "This central building is the Task Office. All mission requests and rewards are handled here. You could say this is the largest task delegation point in the jujutsu world."
Minamoto Sōjun observed the nearly empty building and realized that the main feature of Jujutsu High was the vast space with few people.
"Next door is the supply station," Mishima Shiko entered another building. "In addition to the free food, we also provide clothes and other necessary items for sorcerers. If you need something, just let me know."
A few more introductions, and they finished their tour of the main sections of Jujutsu High.
