Chapter 113: I Am Not Negotiating With You - You Must Come With Me!

Chapter 113: I Am Not Negotiating With You – You Must Come With Me!

Lin Fengmian wasn’t quite sure how he felt, but it would be fair to say that grief was not one of the dominant emotions in his heart.

As for Song Youwei’s wicked old mother-in-law, he never had any sympathy for her.

Now that the old woman had fallen into the hands of a demonic cultivator, Lin Fengmian couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved.

It wasn’t like he was celebrating her death-whether she lived or died had little to do with him.

But with her gone, Song Youwei’s life would surely become much easier, free from the chains that once bound her.

However, Song Youwei clearly didn’t feel that way. At this moment, she knelt down beside the corpse and sobbed uncontrollably.

Lin Fengmian crouched down next to her and gently patted her shoulder. “My condolences.”

Tears clouded Song Youwei’s eyes as she looked up at him, then buried herself in his chest, crying even harder.

Lin Fengmian could only give her an awkward hug and murmur soft words of comfort. Meanwhile, he quietly pulled the white sheet over the old woman’s body, making sure she was properly covered – just in case she suddenly jumped up to hit him.

Zhao Yazhi waved her hand, and the city guards sensibly took their leave.

But she didn’t leave. She stayed to make sure that this beast didn’t do anything indecent in front of the corpse.

If Lin Fengmian knew what Zhao Yazhi was thinking, he would have jumped up and cursed her for being disgusting.

“What kind of person do you take me for?”

For now, his attention was focused on Song Youwei. He asked in a low voice, “Why were you outside? I thought you were…”

“I went out to set up my stall…” Song Youwei choked out between sobs. “Then… the city guards came and told me… my mother… she…” Her words trailed off as fresh sobs tore through her body.

Only now did Lin Fengmian realize that she hadn’t listened to him at all. She had gone to work as usual.

She must have been afraid that the old woman would scold her for skipping her daily routine. Ironically, this had saved her life by keeping her away from the disaster.

Lin Fengmian gently pulled her back into his arms, not knowing what else to say. All he could do was hold her and let her cry as much as she needed.

A short time later, Lin Fengmian emerged from the room, his clothes soaked with tears. As a few curious onlookers cast strange glances at him, he coughed awkwardly to break the silence.

He took the initiative to change the subject. “We’re in trouble now. That demon cultivator has changed its behavior, now it dares to move even in broad daylight.”

Wen Qinlin nodded grimly. “Our manpower is stretched thin, and we have no leads. It’s a real problem.”

Lin Fengmian sighed. “We can’t go on forever without a break. It may be able to outlast us, but we’re only human – we’ll collapse sooner or later.”

After all, it’s waiting in ambush while we’re running ourselves ragged.

Wen Qinlin sighed. “For now, we have no choice. Let’s hope the reinforcements from the Heaven Patrol Tower arrive soon.”

Lin Fengmian’s brow suddenly furrowed as a thought crossed his mind.

“Brother Wen, isn’t it strange that this demonic cultivator killed the old woman and no one else? Don’t you think it’s… a bit too coincidental?”

Wen Qinlin looked surprised. “What are you implying?”

With a complex expression, Lin Fengmian replied, “Could it be that the talisman I placed outside the walls attracted the demon cultivator’s attention?”

Wen Qinlin thought for a moment before he sighed. “It is possible. I should have thought of this before – it was my fault.”

Lin Fengmian scratched his nose uncomfortably. It seemed that he had unintentionally become the reason for the old woman’s death.

Then a thought occurred to him, and he blurted out, “I think I know someone suspicious!”

“That demon cultivator dared to act against you, a Core Formation cultivator, but it didn’t provoke him. Isn’t that strange?”

“Either the demon cultivator was desperate, it was a coincidence, or…” Lin Fengmian’s voice deepened, “he is the demonic cultivator-or at least has some connection to it.”

Xia Yunxi’s eyes lit up. “Senior Brother, are you talking about Master Huanglong?”

Zhou Xiaoping clapped her hands excitedly. “Right! How could I not think of that? The moment he went into seclusion, the demon cultivator appeared!”

Wen Qinlin nodded thoughtfully. “I agree. Master Huanglong seems suspicious.”

“But Brother Lin, don’t forget, there is someone else who is just as suspicious.”

Lin Fengmian knew who Wen Qinlin was referring to, but he shook his head. “She may seem suspicious, but does she even have the power to steal a Demon Core?”

Wen Qinlin didn’t deny the possibility. “What if the fox demon she found was already badly injured?”

Zhou Xiaoping suddenly realized who they were referring to and hesitated. “Oh right… That little fox, she got it from her.”

Lin Fengmian immediately defended Song Youwei. “If she were a demon cultivator, why would she wait so long to act? She could have killed a long time ago.”

Wen Qinlin’s expression became serious. “Maybe she didn’t want to act at first. But now… maybe she has a reason to.”

“Maybe she wants to leave with someone, or maybe she snapped after enduring the old woman’s abuse when that someone returned.”

Lin Fengmian was at a loss for words. He stared at the dilapidated hut in the corner of the courtyard, his expression alternating between uncertainty and determination.

“Brother Wen, don’t worry. If she really is the demon cultivator, I won’t show her any mercy.”

“I’ll keep an eye on her for now.”

Wen Qinlin nodded. “That would be best.”

Lin Fengmian turned to him. “Brother Wen, may I ask, what is your cultivation level?”

Wen Qinlin could tell what Lin Fengmian wanted to know, so he answered without hesitation. In fact, he came right to the point.

“I’m at the mid-stage of the Core Formation realm, while Master Huanglong is only at the False Core stage.”

Lin Fengmian gave a knowing nod and then solemnly said, “Brother Wen, I’ll need you to quietly investigate the Tai Xu Temple through the city lord’s mansion. Make sure you don’t alarm anyone.”

He then turned to Xia Yunxi and Zhou Xiaoping. “You two, stay together. Continue to search the city to prevent any further damage from the demon cultivator.”

“Keep your communication talismans close to you. If anything happens, notify everyone immediately!”

Wen Qinlin and the others nodded their heads in agreement. However, Zhou Xiaoping asked curiously, “And what about you?”

Lin Fengmian looked at the hut, his expression complicated. “I’ll take care of things here and join you later.”

Wen Qinlin agreed that Lin Fengmian was the best person to handle this. Even if Song Youwei turned out to be the demon cultivator, Lin Fengmian would still be the safest person to confront her.

“Be careful!” Wen Qinlin reminded.

Lin Fengmian nodded and the group split up to carry out their tasks.

His plan had been carefully thought out.

The demonic cultivator’s strength was roughly on par with Master Huanglong, who was barely at the False Core level – a cultivator with limited abilities.

As long as they didn’t encounter a true Core Formation realm expert, Lin Fengmian and his group could hold their own, at least for a while.

Although none of them could defeat the demon cultivator on their own, they could last long enough in a fight without being immediately overwhelmed.

The city lord’s mansion was located in the center of the city, so Wen Qinlin could quickly respond to any crisis and provide assistance wherever it was needed.

Lin Fengmian entered the small house again. The city guards had already taken away the old woman’s body, but the curious crowd outside remained, unwilling to leave.

Inside, Song Youwei sat dazed, her eyes blank. It was only when Lin Fengmian approached that she seemed to come out of her stupor, lifting her head to look at him.

Her eyes were swollen and red, making her look particularly pitiful.

“Sister Youwei, come with me. It’s not safe here,” Lin Fengmian said in a deep, firm voice.

“Leave? Where would I even go?” Song Youwei asked with a weak voice.

“Come with me to Lin Manor,” Lin Fengmian replied, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.

At his words, Song Youwei immediately shook her head. “No. I want to stay here. I don’t want to give people a reason to gossip.”

Lin Fengmian crouched down and met her eyes with a serious look. “I’m beginning to suspect that you might be the demon cultivator.”

Her eyes widened slightly in shock, but before she could react, Lin Fengmian continued.

“From this moment on, you are not allowed to leave my sight. This is not a request. You must come with me.”
