Chapter 49: Flame Fruit
Two weeks later, Olivia came out of the garden and passed out on her very comfortable bed. She had separated the task, after shaping some wooden bracelets she would carve runes and then glue the magic stone the last step is to activate the spell. When she is done she would go to the garden and bless the tree.
She realized that blessing the fruits would zap her magic dry if she would do it all at once. The process is tedious and repetitive but this way she can do both because it would take longer for her to recover her magic and then activate the spell on the bracelets otherwise.
She has worked hard in a 'blessing' ritual to bless the grape tree that Olivia has chosen from all the other fruits. She chose it because in a tree there are my fruits if everyone got one grape, it may be enough for everyone.
The idea is that each soldier will eat the fruit and gain a flame tattoo on their body which will grant them healing ability that will even mend their bones back in place given time. The most important aspect is that once they die, their bodies can not be turned into undead corpse.
There is a small catch and that is now Olivia needs some time to recover from the ritual because it was essentially taking away some of her power and sharing it amongst the fruits in the tree. This will undoubtedly be the most expensive layer of protection she has ever given to her people.
Even after waking up a day later she still felt out of sort. Olivia also has another reason for giving out her power. Her army is not normal, they each have the strength and speed of two to four normal soldiers it would be a devastating tragedy if they were to work for the enemy.
Most importantly she will be very sad if many of her people die and become zombies that go on to destroy the world should they lose this fight.
While she was working between the underground garden and the work shop, all former wildlings were being given treatment pills and potions to make them stronger and able to deal with the harsh weather just as Olivia had done for the rest of her people.
Some may say this is not necessary for people born in these lands but Olivia insists for it to be done. This way they won't drag everyone down when the army moves out. The strength type pills will not make them as strong as her own army since time is short but it's better than nothing.
Dressing simply, she took a step outside noticing her hands are a bit shaky at this moment. Enym walked on her side with a frown seeing his Mistress out of shape like this.
Olivia noticed her generals have divided the wildlings amongst their various military forces that wear different colors even though they have the same sigil. There are 6 warging people in the army now and they are put into the scouting team.
Olivia understands none of them will ever be able to track the Night king so she and Bran came to an understanding. His power has grown enough for him to appear next to her and track the night king so she forbade him from coming along in person.
Since she can see him, he will just guide her while his actual body is in Winterfell. This way she will know where to take her army as they move out.
It is now an official order for the factory to work overtime creating more armor. Olivia watched the two prisoners from the North train with the rest of the people. Jaime Lannister is not completely useless with one hand while Theon is better with a bow.
Jaime is knocked down and has to rest for a while so he walks her way. Looking at her he smiles in greeting. Olivia watches him having expected to see a beaten man but his eyes are not too hallow.
"Good day.." He hesitate then continues "....your grace."
Olivia raised an eyebrow. "How do you find the people here?"
"Strong. Abnormally so. And exotic." He answered her.
"Would you prefer being here to the dungeons of Winterfell?" She asked.
"If you have the experience, that question wouldn't be asked by you." His answer surprised her because she dis spend over a week in there after Caitlyn Tully tried to have her raped but she killed her two guards.
"The food is especially good here and everyone seems clean. This place is a marvel I wonder if your king brother has ever been here?"
"He has. He came here to take his girl back."
"I heard she disappeared one night. Was she here the whole time?" Jaime asked
"I took her." She admitted.
"Why?"
"Reasons."
"But you let him believe she was dead?"
"A small lesson. I'm sure he is better for it." She said unconcerned.
"Or he is angry about it."
"Or that.." She said lightly. Then she gestured for him to go back to his training.
She called a meeting with her council members.
Looking at the grand round table made from marble she is surprised, it seems they changed the council meeting room to fit the status of a place where many of their city's laws and rules are decided. "I would like to assume that one is mine?" She went and sat on a large flaming tree throne line chair similar to the one in the throne room but modest.
"Anna and faith have been working on transforming the palace to show beauty and might of our queen. As such, they have instructed everyone to start addressing your grace as queen." Vince came to the front of Olivia and bowed like a gentleman before reaching for her hand kissing it gently after getting on one knee.
Olivia watched him wondering if this is some sort of ploy to ask for something, but before she could say something, a scream sounded from a distant castle. Olivia can hear it because of her super hearing ability. She took back her hand from Vince and walked out but the others felt that something is wrong so they followed.
Olivia walked all the way to the green castle and found her dear mentor Dixon still releasing ghastly screams as her body is covered in black veins. Olivia had been very worried but upon seeing what ails her mentor, the worry in her eyes is quickly replaced by cold indifference. She sat down watching the creaming Dixon on the ground without looking away.
The council members walked in and found this scene "My queen, can we do something?" Caine walked forward wanting to touch Dixon but Olivia stopped him.
"It's a curse, there is no saving her." The cold tone confused the others because they thought Olivia loves Dixon.
"What kind of curse?" Ginyr asked taking a step back.
"The kind that will only be activated when you betray me." She stood up and bent over near Dixon, "Isn't that right mentor Dixon? You....betrayed me?"
Dixon's complexion got worse and she stopped screaming to speak. "It was just one formula in exchange for my former master's life." Her voice cracking from pain. The evidence is right on the table where she has written a Haunted city's treasured formal and was ready to send it out.
But because the curse would be activated before executing the last act before successfully betraying Olivia, she was not able to send it out.
It turns out someone recognized her from the news paper as one of the council members in the Haunted city and sent her a message that her old master has been kidnapped, he will be killed unless she sends back the recipe for a healing pill that is capable of even mending bones back together.
Dixon is a wise lady but she had fallen in love with her married master which is why his wife sold her off. Even now she became so worried when she received the threat it clouded her mind or she was already a treacherous character to begin with.
Hearing Dixon's explanation the others somewhat felt sorry for her and wondered if the queen will forgive her. "My curse doesn't react until you are at the final stage of betrayal which means instead of asking for my help in rescuing your dear master you decided to betray me. This I can not over look."
"Hehehe.. what a cold heart, even after hearing my reasoning you will not show any mercy. You always said this is my home but I will tell you today, it is another form of slavery, a collar is a collar no mater how shiny it looks." She spoke while looking towards her colleagues hoping to inspire doubt in their hearts.
"None of you are forbidden from leaving the kingdom and establishing your own cities. You will notice that when outside the city all the sensitive knowledge about the city, about me, will elude you as soon as you make a decision to leave."
Words fell and the council members looked at each other. "All of you may retire whenever you want with all the wealth you have amassed over the years. I will have no need to silence you for escaping my protection because I have magic."
"All this because you couldn't trust me? If you couldn't trust me then you can't trust any of them." The said gritting her teeth.
"That's right, I don't trust you and I was right not to. after all, you are only human and your own interest will always take precedence to mine." Olivia didn't deny it. Trusting another person when they have the freedom to betray you is illogical.
"Am I going to die?" she trembled.
"I'm afraid so." Olivia answered her. The others can see she is not so indifference about this matter. After all, they all know Dixon was the only one of them other than the scholar whom Olivia spent the most time with and her affection for her was obvious so this must be very hard for her.
"Can't you forgive me? This pain is unbearable." Dixon asked pleadingly.
"It is irreversible." Olivia said lightly. Olivia found the scroll tied to the ankle on the bird in it's cage. All that was left was to release this bird and her recipe will be gone. She showed the scroll for all to see, there is no doubts about their colleague's betrayal of their queen.
The former council member and master of the medicinal castle died screaming that day. Just as Olivia had told her mentors that if someone betrayed her and her city, they would die screaming.
The entire council members felt cold seeing this situation. They have always admired the queen and felt it was their good luck to have been chosen to accompany such a hard working and generous little girl. They swore to give their all and serve their little Mistress out of consideration for all the trust she had bestowed on them.
Suddenly they realized their queen does not only rely on the generous titles and wealth to keep them loyal but she ...is actually a frightening ruler. She just didn't use the cruelty on any of them before as there was no need, but today showed them she is not above unleashing a world of pain on them all should they displease her. Six years of being together and today they had a glimpse of her cruel side and it is terrifying.
When the medical head screamed in agony at that time they all couldn't bare it and left one by one but Olivia stayed and watched as punishment for herself to have chosen a disloyal subject.
They didn't know whether to be proud or fearful.
The situation at the funeral had been stifling, their queen's anger apparent and as soon as the body was burnt she didn't stay for the subsequent proceedings.
Olivia went to practice her sword skills in her exclusive training grounds. Lola slowly slithered to her side, Olivia has been trying to find Lola so she can give her the pill called blood cleansing. This pill worked wonders for the dragons it should work better for non magical beasts too.
Lola has not taken such medicine before but Olivia realizes it is not just magical creatures who will benefit from this pill. Perhaps by refining their bloodline it will increase the power in their body ultimately making her magical.
Coming back from within the castle, Olivia gave her 12 pills to take and instructed her to go into her cave. She had put up a barrier around Lola and stayed to watch over her as she went into deep sleep.
It seems Lola's mutation is not simple because instead of sucking in mana, she sucked the spirit energy from the air into her body. Olivia stood up in shock witnessing this scene.
Upon pondering about it she realized her dragons had always been magic creatures and their advancement would require magic which is a form of mana to complete the upgrade.
Lola is another story, she is a beast and her mutation will allow her to be a fierce beast. This will explain the difference between her bond and that of Daenerys and her dragons.
This breakthrough of her little snake took 3 days and nights. Olivia went away only after the spiritual energy storm around Lola has gone down which indicated the completion on the breakthrough.
Good news came from the factory a week after they were given a task. It appears they have made more than the required amount of soft wood armor which prompted Olivia to call on all the soldiers into her throne room.
Olivia looked at the soldiers, when she told her generals to release those willing to leave, about four thousand people left at that time, the wildlings have increased her army significantly. As she sits on her throne made like a large burning tree, Anna added the last part since Olivia has chosen a white flame as the sigil of their kingdom, she saw the nervousness on their faces and smiled.
"I hear the new addition to the kingdom are adjusting well?" Olivia asked but is met with silence. "Am I wrong? Have you been mistreated in any way?" She leans forward watching their faces carefully.
"We have been treated very well your grace." Mance seeing his people not answering stepped up.
"I see, anyone who has been mistreated may come to inform me this in the white castle and I will see to it that it never happens again." She assured.
"Many thanks your grace." He said politely, as they are still talking, a group came in pulling a trolley with a large wooden container that has a glowing tree inside. They put the grape tree with gleaming purple fruits right below the throne where everyone can see it.
Olivia waited until the servants left before she stood up "As you are all aware, our land is under a constant threat of an immortal tyrant who wants everyone in his army. This enemy has an ability to raise the dead and then use them to kill more people."
"It is undoubtedly very terrifying to think that your comrade whom you have known for half your life or your brother whom you love can be used against you at the drop of a hat and there is no way to resist the creature's commands once you become one of his undead soldiers. Are you afraid?" She asked her people and without hesitation they agreed.
"Yes!"
"Good, it means you are not stupid. Now, I bring you brave warriors a gift. The flame fruit tree. If you eat one of these fruits you will gain minor healing abilities but most importantly your body will reject any black magic even in death. In other words, even if you fall in the upcoming battle, you will NEVER BECOME AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!" The voice is mysterious in the end but they all know that their queen knows magic that was taught by the children of the forest.
When the former free folks heard this, they were even more convinced of her ability to lead them in this upcoming battle. Hearing her words they gasped in shock and then loud thunderous screams of joy tore through the throne room.
The people started plucking and handing the fruits to each soldier in the throne room. After today, they can head out to battle without any fear of adding to the army of the enemy. Their numbers is probably only a third of the night king's army there is no need to go there only to benefit the enemy.
"As soon as you take the fruit, your body will sort of mutate to fast healing body and this process is not easy so...brace yourselves." Just as she finished speaking she gave one fruit to her dragons and because the level of the fruit is not above their current healing level they had no reaction. But this way her dragons will not be used by the enemy if they fall.
"Aaaaaaahgh"
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah"
She sat there for an hour making sure they are all okay as they went to their residence to rest. The next morning they are supposed to go and get a set of armor from the military castle then get used to fighting wearing it.
This day, she also welcomed the children of the forest into her castle so they will move together when they go to attack the night king. She realizes their numbers are close to the number of giants she has. 22. Apparently blood raven is now no more but they came with several sacks filled with sacred leaves.
.....
A man took a stance watching his opponent's every move before he attacked going for a swift stab in the abdomen but his opponent disappeared from his sight and he heard the wind blowing from his right and jumped back a distance only to narrowly miss a blow to his head.
"Good choice employing your senses but the night king brings a storm with him. When we get there stay on your guard and learn to find your enemy even in a chaotic place." Olivia has been training with her commanders to test their individual and team battle tactics because only they are able to subdue the whites commanders if they work well together.
Today is the last day, they have made preparations and since she doesn't want to wait for the night king to come here she has to go to him or at least meet him far away from her home.
This will take away the advantages of setting up traps but her army has been facing Dothraki hoards so open space battles are the usual for them. They just need to eliminate the fear of facing dead creatures.
Olivia has been beating them blue and black even breaking bones to show them how long their flame tattoos will take to heal and she encouraged the rest of the army to find this out on their own. For the rest of the week it was the soldiers screaming from broken bones and cracked ribs but in the end they all understood how much damage their bodies can take before they need to use medicine and rest to recover. She decided to take only half of the giants and send the rest to the red lands.
Olivia had to hold a meeting with the council members to leave precise instructions. "I know the situation is tense but I have faith that even if the army fails and I fall on the battlefield, my legacy will live on."
"I chose you and made you pillars of my kingdom because I believe that every kingdom need people and people need food, medicine, wealth, education and development as well as protection."
"You are the foundation of my legacy and if the true North falls, a new hero will emerge you just need to wait in the red waste and continue building a better home for our people." She sounds gentle but stern at the same time.
"Yes!" They answered in unison.
"My queen may I ask something. Should you fall, must we choose a leader amongst us?" Bellamy asked.
"No, you may choose a face of the kingdom someone you will put forward as a prince or princess but the you must remain with in your stations and focus on your specific tasks because as a foundation you are very important where you are and none of you must be more powerful than the other."
"When you arrive in the red castle, the military should occupy the castle on the east I have made it large enough for all the recruits but I need you to help them in recruitment and subsequent training because that place may be a waste but it is not safe, you have the Dothraki on one side, the Ghis Island on the side. Do not show mercy to anyone who wants to enslave my people. Do you understand?" Her expression is very serious.
"We understand."
"Your grace, the breaker of chains may come to our kingdom looking to conquer us. What do we do in such a situation?" Even though Deanerys has not taken over a non slave city she may decide their city is still too weak and take it over to get the various formulas and items they produce. Not just Daenerys but the other masters as well.
Just their fleet alone is very attractive not to mention their news paper, the soap, glass, and all the other items that set them apart from the rest of the world. But Olivia is not scared, her things are not something just anyone can covet.
"My 20 thousands soldiers are not ordinary soldiers, even a new soldier who has only been with us for six months can now run as fast as a horse. Those older and were here when we started can run three times faster than a normal horse. They can throw powerful spears in the air with great power enough to bring a dragon to the ground if aimed precisely."
"If they sent elephants just aim at the eyes and kill them down I built a large wall covered in dragon glass so unless you open the gate for them, there is little chance for anyone to take that city. There is a row of underground gardens just waiting to be farmed so it will be self sustainable without relying on outside imports. Even if they camp outside the city it won't starve the people instead it will only make them suffer from the heat of that place."
Olivia knows they are scared because of the word 'dragon' but their people are superior soldiers. At first Olivia had wanted to sell the medicine but then she realized it will only bring trouble to her home so she decided to wait until she can give it to her own army and it worked. She has one of the strongest army in the known world.
The pillars now have all bought a small army each to protect their interest. They bought medicine from the medicine castle and trained them, under the agreement each may not have an army above ten thousand and if there is a crisis they must contribute to the army of the kingdom.
Then Olivia turned to the new addition to the council. "I hear you were training directly under Dixon?" The man looked at her and the first thing she noticed is the piercing color of those icy blue eyes.
He is not good looking per say but once you see him, it is not easy to forget him. There is an air of calmness around him that is only seen in people with experience in dealing with stressful situations.
"Yes your grace. She was the one who bought me from my former master and after she noticed my talent started nurturing it thoroughly." That voice is magnificent and sounds lazy. A contrast to the piercing pair of eyes.
"How do you feel about your new position?" Olivia didn't show much reaction to his answer.
"I will do my best my queen." He bowed where he sat.
"That doesn't answer my question." Olivia's voice turned colder.
"Honestly I am a little frightened." He said so but there is no fear in his expression. Olivia feels there is more to this man than meet the eye.
"If you are not sure you want it, then do not read the materials I am about to hand over to you."
"I am afraid but I am sure I want it." He said not breaking eye contact.
"Then here, put on this wooden bracelet I had made for each of my council members and embrace your future as my lieutenant. Though your battle is on a different field, it is just as crucial if not more importance than the violence. The moment you put that on, you will also take on it's curse."
"Curse?" His bushy eye brow raise in question.
Olivia looked at the people in the room. Then she turned to her three assistants. "You did not tell him?"
"My queen, we had thought maybe it is not our place to divulge such sensitive information." The girl named Gwen knelt and said in absolute fear.
This performance made Olivia frown.
"Why are you so scared?" There is obvious displeasure in her tone.
"If you are so afraid of me, why are you my assistant?" She asked and the girl couldn't answer.
"Get up, don't kneel willy nilly I have no use for it. Bowing your head is sufficient if you are so scared. Now, Anna I asked a question."
"My queen, the information was classified as sensitive." She bowed and said. Olivia looked at the expectant face of the new master of medicine and sighed. "What is your name?"
"This one is called Milio"
"Milio, It's like this, I put a curse on all of my people so they will not betray the kingdom but the one placed on the six pillars is particularly special. Very painful and irreversible so taking the materials with all the secretes of the green castle will bind you to me as my loyal servant and should you decide to leave you may do so but my secretes will not leave with you. It's magic I wont explain." She saw apprehension in the eyes of the young man.
"These bracelets have other functions that you may discover on your own but the curse is one of them. Your teacher died screaming from unimaginable agony after she decided to write down and was about to send out a very valuable formula of mine to her former master's kidnapers."
"I understand. My decision will not change." He said with the same piercing expression making Olivia smile.
"Here you go. Anyone not wearing that bracelet can not memorize these formulas. If you write them down else where the curse will take effect. There are so many precise steps in the preparations that even if you teach it to someone hoping they will take this knowledge outside Its is impossible. This is why I have these specific formulas to the medicine castle."
"But if you teach one person all the step, the curse will take effect. There are many other formulas that can be taught to students but these ones are the kingdom's secrets and may not be passed on." As she finished her speech the young man has already circled around the large table and is now on one knee in front of her.
"This one will gladly be her majesty's eternal servant." Olivia put the bracelet on his large hand and it fit after adjusting itself to his size. These were made by Olivia long before the birth of her dragons, initially she made it to let them communicate with her but she never made use of that function.
"Rise as the medical pillar for of my Flame kingdom. By putting that on, you are now responsible for at least 8 thousand people of my city. Do not let me down. Even in my death, the curse will stand." The last part shocked everyone in the room. Olivia pretended to not notice their pale expressions.
It's not like she said they couldn't leave, they are just greedy and wish for her death so they won't have to leave behind the technology they have learnt here. Only her structural master may use some of the knowledge because she learnt it from him.
.....
