Chapter 35: [35]: Shuten-Dōji's End
Shin Shuichi had never felt so alive. When he closed his eyes, severing his thoughts from the constraints of time, he cast aside all external distractions and began to probe the mysteries of the reverse curse technique.
He "saw" the answers to everything, as if a winding river had suddenly broken through its earthen barriers, with rivulets converging into a vast stream.
"I'm starting to understand it all..."
Reverse curse technique!
The discomfort that had plagued Shin's mind vanished in an instant. The flow and transformation of his cursed energy became incredibly smooth. Without even needing to reverse his technique, the burns across his body began to heal rapidly. Within a few breaths, there were no signs that he had ever been injured.
The joy that had been brimming in Shuten Dōji's expression twisted into one of rage and shock. This feeling… the seemingly limitless cursed energy radiating from him—how could this be?
Gritting her teeth, Shuten Dōji wrenched her spiked iron club from the ground. The blood-red flames that engulfed it were her fury itself, and the sheer force of her swing compressed the very air as it hurtled toward Shin. But just as the devastating attack was about to strike him, it vanished without a trace.
Shuten Dōji looked down at her now-empty hands and the iron club still embedded in the ground. Her blood-red eyes trembled as she realized something—the cursed energy she had just unleashed had also returned to its full state. He had truly mastered the reverse curse technique.
Her expression settled into something unnervingly calm. She pulled the sword Dojikiri from her demonic body, and a slow but unstoppable black-red flame crept from her hand, devouring the sword's blade.
"Remember this, Jujutsu sorcerer. I am Shuten Dōji, King of the Hundred Demons of Mount Ōe!"
With those words, Shuten Dōji sacrificed half of her enormous body, which visibly withered, to strengthen the cursed energy that now engulfed the sword. The dark red flames cloaking Doikiri pulsed with terrifying energy.
Shin calmly poured his cursed energy into Onikiri and Kumo-kiri, filling the two blades to their limits. Yet his cursed energy remained undiminished. Without the strain of overusing his technique on his brain, Shin had finally achieved burdenless use of his curse technique.
He could now control it with incredible precision, even to the point of regulating only the reversal of his cursed energy. Shin could now deplete his cursed energy all at once, knowing that the reverse curse technique would instantly replenish him. In essence, the cost of using the technique reversal had all but disappeared, allowing him to achieve feats that would once have been impossible.
For instance, Shuten Dōji attack could have crushed him into pulp with her iron club, but in the very next moment, Shin would simply restore his body with his technique. Though, the thought of enduring such pain made him wince, so he opted instead to reverse Shuten Dōji's state directly. While difficult, it was well within his abilities now.
From Shin's perspective, Shuten Dōji's struggle appeared entirely harmless. He was even deliberating how best to finish her off. Perhaps it would be best to reverse her state first. Then, maybe Onikiri would finally sever her head.
Shuten Dōji, putting everything into one final strike, swung Dojigiri. But just as expected, her body began to heal once more, and the cursed flames vanished from the sword's blade, revealing its steel as smooth as autumn waters.
[Time Wheel]
Twin blades flashed through the air. The first black flash appeared, and a smile crept across Shin's face.
Here it comes
One black flash, technique reversal! Two black flashes, reversal, repeat and repeat again—until... five black flashes!
Five streaks of black lightning shredded the entire battlefield. Shuten Dōji watched as three of her arms fell to the ground. The one remaining hand reached toward the exposed organs spilling from her body, as the blood slowly dripped down.
Meanwhile, Dojigiri had already landed in the hands of the young sorcerer. Shin stood, lost in thought, with an unreadable expression. Has she realized it yet? With his technique, he don't even have the leverage to take her own body hostage anymore. Is this... the end?
Shin held Dojigiri with a curious expression. When he had finally gathered all three cursed blades, something had immediately been communicated to him—an understanding that these three swords were incomplete in their current form. Each had its unique power, but only when used together would they reveal their full potential.
And that ultimate power was simple: after wounding an enemy with all three blades, the wielder could leave behind a cursed seal, which would trigger a massive burst of damage when detonated.
Real damage.
According to Shin's understanding, this final blow would sever both the body and soul.
"Yes… I was decapitated by a sorcerer just as powerful as you. Although such an injury should not have been fatal to me, that strike severed my soul as well."
Shuten Dōji's sudden speech startled Shin. Is she giving up? He had planned to incapacitate her first, then allow Nao to attempt severing her soul from her body. If that failed, perhaps Gojo-sensei could help.
Shin could reverse Nao's soul because of her unique technique. But that didn't mean he could manipulate souls in general, so if he wanted to kill Shuten Dōji and save Nao's body, he needed a way to target her soul directly.
As for the body itself, there was no need for concern. In her current state, Shuten Dōji wasn't even capable of destroying it.
Picking up her iron club again, Shuten Dōji refused to give up, summoning cursed energy one last time. Her hulking body cast a long shadow as the five blood-red eyes in her head locked onto Shin.
"I am the King of a Hundred Demons... I refuse to believe in something as absurd as fate!"
"Enough with the dramatic speeches."
Shin furrowed his brow, activating his technique. Gripping Dojigiri and Onikiri in hand, with Kumo-kiri at his waist, he closed the distance between them in a single instant. The blade of Dojigiri cut through flesh, while Onikiri sliced bone and muscle. Letting go of one sword, Shin focused on driving Dojigiri deeper into Shuten Dōji's body.
Once Dojigiri pierced her, Shin unleashed his cursed energy in a rapid sequence, switching between all three swords in a continuous, devastating assault. As the technique ended and time resumed for her, Shuten Dōji was left suspended in a state of pure agony, her grotesque body now a ruin of shredded limbs and shattered bones. Her demonic hands had been severed again, four of her five horns were broken, and deep gashes crisscrossed her four red eyes.
Shin felt the cursed seal he had left on Shuten Dōji. With a single thought, he detonated it.
A shadowy figure rose from Shuten Dōji's collapsing form, clad in broken armor and wielding a chipped sword. Its face was obscured by a mask—no, that was its face.
As the shadow swung its blade, invisible cuts slashed across Shuten Dōji's body, leaving her staring blankly as the light in her eyes slowly faded.
As the world around them returned to its normal urban landscape, Shin knew that Shuten Dōji had been exorcised. He approached her now-restored body and began healing it with the reverse curse technique. The wounds that should have been fatal were nearly healed.
Shuten Dōji, exorcised successfully.
With the fall of the King of the Hundred Demons, many of the curses she had transformed into stronger spirits remained. Without thought, they howled and prepared to unleash carnage.
But Shin dispatched them in an instant. The curses that had filled the street split open in unison, their bodies collapsing into dismembered pieces.
Watching from beyond the domain's edge, Nanami saw the scene suddenly revert to normal. The rampaging curses fell dead in the span of a single breath, their dismembered bodies scattered like debris. Then Shin appeared before him, carrying Nao's body.
"I'm going to check on the others. Nanami-senpai, please take Nao's body to Shoko."
Nanami accepted Naon's body and nodded, "Understood. You—"
Before he could finish, Shin had already disappeared. Arriving at Gojo's location, Shin found no sign of the foreign sorcerer who had been fighting him. The moment Shin appeared, Gojo turned toward him.
"Shin? I saw the domain collapse on your end. Did you exorcise the curse?"
Seeing Shin nod, Gojo smiled, reaching out to grab Shin by the shoulder. "We'll talk about the rest later. We need to get back to the school—Yuta might be in danger."
With that, Shin was whisked away in a long-distance teleportation. As the scene shifted, Shin found himself floating above Jujutsu High. The sudden change in location triggered a strange thought in his mind: perhaps this is what my technique looks like to others—skipping over the process and only showing the results.
Gojo looked at the residual traces of the barrier, his eyes shifting slightly as he gazed down at the destroyed ruins below. With a quick motion, he grabbed Shin's shoulder, and the two of them vanished, as if blown away by the wind.
When Shin blinked, he felt solid ground beneath his feet, but his focus was immediately drawn to the figures of Panda, Maki, and Toge lying on the floor nearby.
"Shin, they're all okay. You take them and find Yuta. I have something I need to take care of," Gojo said before disappearing once again, leaving Shin alone with the others.
Shin quickly moved to check on his friends. They were injured but stable, which, for sorcerers, wasn't too alarming. It was clear they had already been treated by Yuta using his Reverse Cursed Technique. Panda, being a cursed corpse, didn't need much more attention. At Shin's call, the group started to regain consciousness quickly.
When Maki opened her eyes and saw Shin, she immediately grabbed his arm, concern evident in her voice. "Where's Yuta? And what about that cursed sorcerer, Suguru Geto?"
Her glasses were missing, and her usually tidy ponytail was loose, her hair falling over her shoulders. Shin reassured her with a calm voice, "Don't worry. Gojo-sensei and I came back together. He's already handling things."
He gestured toward the wrecked battlefield ahead, a small smile appearing on his face. "And from the looks of it, Yuta took care of the enemy himself."
Toge, now fully awake, stared in awe at the devastation in front of them. Panda let out an impressed "Oh, oh!" as he took in the sight. With that, Shin stood up and said, "Let's go. We need to find him."
