Chapter 32: [32]: Shuten-Dōji
For a sorcerer who can command thousands of cursed spirits, causing chaos is all too easy. Even though most of the curses under Suguru Geto's control are not high-grade, they are more than enough to be lethal in a densely populated area like Shinjuku.
Geto's declaration had already sent shockwaves through multiple factions. Preparations were well underway before the Hundred Demons Night Parade was set to begin.
Security measures tightened across the board. Many sorcerers had outstanding records, with some being brazen enough to remain on wanted lists for years. To prevent these sorcerers from causing chaos ahead of time, authorities were forced to take more straightforward, if crude, measures. Additionally, they were grappling with the issue of how to lock down entire areas during a cursed spirit attack without raising too many alarms.
Shinjuku and Kyoto are no small towns that can easily be sealed off. Although casting a barrier would make quick work of isolating the areas, this headache was now left to the higher-ups and officials to figure out. For Shin Shuichi, it hardly mattered.
Despite the tensions, most sorcerers did not doubt their eventual victory. Even the conservative elders who often clashed with Gojo Satoru never questioned his title as the "strongest."
It was fortunate, or perhaps unfortunate, that there was only one Gojo Satoru. In fact, those suffocating under his influence might even wish there was none at all.
While most concerns focused on minimizing casualties and preparing for Geto's unknown strategies, the reality was that if it weren't for Geto's past with Jujutsu High, he would have been eliminated long ago.
Gojo had once chosen not to exorcise Geto, and with one of the three Special Grade Sorcerers, Yuki Tsukumo, being absent from Japan for long periods, it wasn't as if eliminating Geto was an impossible task for the entrenched jujutsu families and organizations. After all, not every sorcerer was an enigma like Gojo Satoru.
But ultimately, the elders had deemed it more trouble than it was worth. Geto's cult merely served as a means to collect cursed spirits and gather allies, not an immediate existential threat. Compared to past cursed organizations, his was far less dangerous, so the higher-ups had left him alone.
No one had expected him to come knocking first, sending a blatant threat like a murder notice, informing them of the time and place of his attack. It was sheer arrogance.

By the evening of the 24th, Shinjuku, usually bustling with people, had become eerily quiet, with only sorcerers patrolling the streets. Everyone capable of fighting was there, save for Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zen'in.
Yuta was kept back because of Rika. If cursed users ambushed him and caused her to lose control, it would be disastrous for both sides. Maki, on the other hand, was left behind due to the complexity of the battlefield. Her reliance on glasses to see curses would make her too vulnerable if her gear was destroyed during the chaos. Thus, both remained at Jujutsu High.
Even Nao Gen was dispatched to the frontlines. According to Nanami, her progress had been swift, but Gojo also brought some bad news: the cursed object, Dojigiri, had been stolen. It was highly suspected that Geto's group was behind the theft.
"Do you think he's already figured out how to revive Shuten-Dōji?" Shin wondered aloud. "We barely know anything about that hypothetical curse spirit. It could be a real pain to deal with."
Gojo, hands behind his head, responded lightly, "Well, if that happens, leave it to me. Besides, weren't you the one who took down a Special Grade curse last time?"
"Hahaha... The strong should take on more, right?"
"You weren't saying that last time. Anyway, stay sharp. I'm sure he's plotting something."
As if on cue, Gojo's eyes shifted skyward. "They're here."
A swarm of cursed spirits appeared, not just in the sky but also flooding the ground. Watching the black tide of curses surge toward them, many sorcerers felt their skin crawl.
Such a sight is rare even in their line of work, especially considering that some of these spirits radiated terrifying power, causing the surrounding curses to avoid them. Gojo's gaze moved toward the rooftop of a distant building. "That showoff isn't even on the battlefield."
Atop the skyscraper, Miguel stood with two others—a man and a woman—observing the battlefield below, particularly Gojo. "Our job is to hold off Gojo. I just hope Geto finishes his work quickly. Are we ready to release Shuten-Dōji?"
The man with three cursed swords strapped to his waist—Dojigiri, Onikiri, and Kumokiri—nodded. "We'll act according to plan. You send curses and others to keep them busy, and I'll wait for the right moment to strike. If we can resurrect Shuten-Dōji, the battle will be a lot easier. We might even be able to deal a heavy blow here."
Miguel unfurled a whip made of twisted strands resembling hair and leapt off the rooftop. "Then let's begin!"
---
Shin had positioned himself on higher ground, surveying the battlefield. Jujutsu sorcerers from Jujutsu High weren't the only ones here—many unfamiliar faces had joined the fight. While some sorcerers were sent to support Kyoto, like Nanami staying in Shinjuku and Mei Mei heading to Kyoto, others were deployed strategically between both fronts.
The sea of curses soon clashed with the sorcerers, just as Principal Yaga had predicted. Most of the curses were low-grade, the kind that second-grade sorcerers could handle. However, the higher-grade spirits were the real threat—one misstep, and even a competent sorcerer could be killed instantly.
From his vantage point, Shin provided long-range support to the others. He took out weaker curses with a single arrow and carefully managed his cursed energy, conserving it for the long haul. Sometimes, all it took was a shot to injure a spirit and assist a fellow sorcerer in finishing it off.
But then, Ijichi arrived, rushing to Gojo with urgent news. "Gojo-sensei, there's something I must report. It's regarding the investigation you had me conduct."
Gojo listened thoughtfully, then suddenly called out, "Panda, Toge, Shin!"
Panda and Inumaki, who were closer, turned toward him. "What's up, Gojo-sensei?"
Without wasting time, Gojo grabbed them both, hurriedly drawing complex symbols under their feet as he spoke quickly. "Geto is at Jujutsu High right now! I'm sending you back."
Boom!
The ground shook violently as a massive cursed spirit, its body made of stone, rose from the street nearby. Sorcerers could be seen battling it fiercely. Then, Shin saw someone drop down from the sky and cleave the spirit's head in half. However, what came next made his heart sink.
A powerful, ominous aura rose from the severed body of the stone curse. This curse's energy dwarfed that of the giant it had just defeated. Shin leapt from his position, rushing toward the source of the disturbance. Gojo's figure vanished as he faced off against a towering, dark-skinned figure clad in white, speaking a foreign language.
Just before Gojo activated a spell to send Panda and Inumaki back, he said, "I'll finish off this guy and return right away."
---
Moments earlier, Shin had noticed the commotion near Nanami's position. Nanami had just finished off a powerful curse, and Shin had helped others nearby avoid dangerous situations. But then, a shout from Nanami caught his attention again.
He watched in horror as a cursed user, unnoticed until now, appeared behind Nao Gen. A cursed sword pierced through her chest, blood staining the blade as it emerged from the other side. Dark markings writhed on the blade, seeping into her body as if alive.
Dojigiri
The name flashed through Nao's mind as her consciousness began to slip. Her vision blurred, but in her final moments of awareness, she caught sight of Nanami rushing toward her. Before darkness overtook her, Nao's ears were filled with the sound of manic laughter.
Shin's heart pounded in his chest as he watched the scene unfold. The blade had avoided Yuna's heart, so there was still a chance to save her if she could reach Shoko Ieiri in time. But something about the aura around her body made his instincts scream in alarm.
"The cursed energy... *Dojigiri, Shuten-Dōji, and the Gen clan's descendant!"
Leaping into the fray, Shin arrived to find Nao's eyes flickering with a twisted, manic joy. Red light shimmered in her gaze, a storm of malevolent energy surrounding her like the foreboding calm before a tempest.
Shin immediately attempted to reverse her condition with his technique reversal, but the cursed energy within Nao rejected his efforts. The entity within her had already fused with her, far beyond what he could undo.
The pressure radiating from her was far beyond anything Shin had faced before. Even the Special Grade curse he had defeated before didn't compare to the malevolence emanating from her now.
"I can't reverse both of them at once. I need to target her soul directly."
Nao's curse technique allowed her to separate her soul from her body, Shin thought. If I can just reverse the state of her soul and exorcise the curse taking over her body, maybe I can bring her back.
Focusing his energy, Shin shifted his technique's target from Nao's entire being to just her soul. The moment he succeeded, Nao's ethereal, mist-like form appeared beside him, looking shocked as she stared at what was happening to her physical body.
The "Nao" in front of them—the cursed entity now in control—lifted her head. Crimson markings spread across her face, and her once-black hair had turned a deep red. With a deep, satisfied breath, she opened her eyes, revealing five red irises. Aside from her natural eyes, three more had opened—two on her forehead and one on her brow.
Her body began to creak and grow, joints popping as she expanded to over two meters tall. She touched one of the five horns growing from her head, surveying the battlefield with a greedy, malevolent gaze.
"Ah, to return to the mortal world once more... How wonderful~," she said, savoring the moment. As she spoke, a wave of cursed energy exploded from her, shaking the very air with its sheer malevolence. Her voice, full of arrogance and dominance, thundered across the battlefield.
"I am the King of All Demons—Shuten-Dōji. Offer yourselves to me, mortals!" she bellowed, her cursed energy rippling outward in waves, suffocating everyone nearby.
