Chapter 12: [12]: Extreme Speed
Shin Shuichi quickly emerged from the shadows and sprinted toward the moving taxi. The driver seemed to notice him, and the car sped up significantly.
Shin raised his hand, concentrating a small amount of cursed energy, and aimed at the rear tire of the moving taxi, firing a shot.
However, the seemingly ordinary taxi suddenly emitted an aura of curses, and a cursed spirit, partially hidden, merged with the car! Strange things appeared on the surface of the vehicle, blocking Shin's attacks, preventing them from reaching the tires.
The taxi sped up, about to leave Shin behind. Shin couldn't destroy the car, as Nitta Akari was still inside.
Yet, Shin didn't look frustrated. On the contrary, he smiled. "Arrogant as expected. Let's save Miss Nitta first."
"Wheel of Time, turn!"
The speeding taxi abruptly halted, freezing in place like a moth caught under a streetlight, as if it were sealed in invisible amber.
Shin quickly reached the side of the taxi, smashed the window with a punch, and the shattered glass froze in midair, only moving slightly when touched by him.
He opened the door, lifted the statue-like Nitta Akari out, and carried her over his shoulder. With his other hand, he drew his sword and effortlessly stabbed it into the neck of the grinning driver, who was the killer they had been hunting.
Shin swiftly stepped back, releasing the "Timeless" state. The moths resumed fluttering under the streetlights, and the taxi, which had been completely still, suddenly erupted into movement.
Boom!
Bang!
A series of explosive sounds followed, echoing sharply in the air as the taxi veered off course, flipped several times, and crashed down the street. Glass shattered, and the car's frame twisted and deformed as it skidded for several meters before coming to a stop.
Nitta Akari, gasping for breath as if she'd just surfaced from drowning, instinctively clung to Shin. Once she realized her surroundings, she exclaimed, "The cursed user... he can influence others' thoughts and actions. I'm not sure if it's a technique."
Shin set her down, wiped the blood off his sword, and looked at the overturned wreck of the taxi. "It doesn't matter," he said calmly. "He's on the verge of death now."
Nitta Akira, puzzled, looked at the wrecked car. Suddenly, there was a sound, and the door flew open with a bang. A man, covered in blood, crawled out of the wreckage.
"It's him!" Nitta Akira shouted, pointing at the man. Her eyes filled with confusion as the figure, once so arrogant, now crawled on the ground, one hand clutching his neck as blood oozed between his fingers. His face, once twisted with arrogance, was now contorted with fear and rage.
As the man crawled out, a bizarre, invisible scene unfolded. A black, ominous aura rose from the wrecked car, quickly forming into a strange mass. It looked like a swirling mist but was covered in eyes and mouths, constantly moving and horrifying to behold.
Despite its small size, the cursed spirit's aura was even stronger than the Grade 2 spirit Shin had previously fought alongside Maki.
If this spirit had a technique, it would be close to a Grade 1 cursed spirit. Judging by the situation, it seemed to be the shikigami of the cursed user.
After summoning the spirit, the dying cursed user swayed as it floated toward him and merged into his body like water or smoke.
As the black substance began to bubble from his neck like an ominous swamp, it sealed his wound. Though the cursed user was visibly recovering, his expression darkened even more as he glared at the blonde woman—his former "prey"—and the stern-faced boy standing beside her.
Without a doubt, the injuries, the rescue, and the ruined plan were all the doing of this boy... Damn it!
The cursed user's mind was consumed by anger, almost to the point of losing all reason, though it was triggered by a profound fear of death.
His neck wound wasn't something that could be healed easily. Shin's earlier attack had precisely struck a fatal spot, severing his artery and windpipe.
He was only alive now thanks to his shikigami's technique, but it was a temporary reprieve. The spirit couldn't perform a "reverse cursed technique" to truly heal him.
The cursed user's rage distorted his thoughts. 'No! I can't die like this! So many more 'worthless people' need to be punished!'
His gaze fixed on Shin, the source of his suffering. His twisted thoughts ignored the vast difference in their power.
Shin, however, remained calm, watching as the cursed user fused with the spirit and staggered to his feet, glaring with murderous intent. But to Shin, it was no more than the dying barks of a mad dog.
Nitta Akari, a little tense, saw the cursed user rise again despite being on the verge of death. She voiced her concerns to Shin, noting that the noise from the crashing car might attract attention from nearby residents, complicating things.
Shin nodded, then walked toward the cursed user, telling Nitta to step back. His teacher's words echoed in his mind:
"Shin, your technique is a nightmare for cursed users or jujutsu sorcerers. Humans have limits. Most jujutsu sorcerers can't master the reverse cursed technique, which means if you hit a vital spot and they don't get treatment quickly, they'll die."
"And your technique... exceeds human reaction speed. You can kill an enemy even after they activate their technique, as long as you're fast enough."
Shin had been excited at the time, but his teacher had added with a smirk, "But if the enemy traps you in their domain, that's a different story."
As Shin recalled those words, the cursed user unleashed a final attack: a black, spike-like projectile shot toward Shin. The cursed user's face twisted with delight.
Shin calmly raised his left hand, fingers forming a seal, and whispered, "Wheel of Time, reverse."
The cursed user, stunned, watched as his powerful attack vanished into thin air.
"What?! What did you do?!"
The cursed user's face contorted in fury, his body consumed by the black substance. Driven by madness, he tried to gather the last of his cursed energy to attack again.
"Time to end this," Shin thought, entering his "Timeless" state once more. In a few swift steps, he reached the cursed user and punched him in the heart, then followed with a blow to his abdomen, shattering his internal organs. Shin then ended the technique.
The cursed user collapsed, vomiting blood mixed with fragments of his destroyed insides. His spirit, which had fused with him, was now useless.
"Release... Kill... everyone..." The cursed user, in his final moments, unleashed his shikigami one last time. A grotesque mass of flesh swelled from his body, forming a monstrous shape.
"Now to deal with this," Shin muttered as he drew his sword, ready to destroy the cursed spirit.
Moments later, the monstrous spirit disintegrated, and Shin stood before it, victorious.
'That's his technique? The speed... it's terrifying.' Nitta Akira thought as she watched Shin signal her to come over, already planning how to clean up the scene.
