C13: The Way of the Phantom Thief (end)

“Oh, welcome back.”

When Kagehiko Kurono, the Phantom Thief, returned to his hideout, he found a girl lying on his bed, relaxing. The one who welcomed him with a fluttering wave was Sana, a waiter at his favorite diner.

“……You’re a bad girl, coming into a man’s house without permission.”

“Mmmm. I don’t mind being eaten by you, Kagehiko.”

“It’s a pity. Blueberries and poisonous meat are not my taste.”

Kagehiko removes the silver mask and uses the magic of the item box to store it. Instead, he takes out a white cloth, the spoils of tonight’s work, and tosses it to Sana.

This job was originally triggered by the Dark Guild’s request to assassinate Marquis Trajan, and in order to accomplish the task, they wanted to use the Phantom Thief Shadow to eliminate the hindering “Eye of the Holy Dragon”.

Their relationship is of mutual benefit, or using and being used.

“Well, that’s fine. Marquis Trajan is as naked as can be thanks to the loss of the Eye of the Holy Dragon. It will be easy to assassinate him now, so let’s not get into any trouble.”

“I’m sure you’ll be able to assassinate Marquis Trajan with ease now. If you stay up too late, your tits won’t get any bigger.”

“By the way, I’ve been wondering for a while if the reason why Kagehiko-san is going after the items is because of his responsibility as a former member of the hero party.”

The party of heroes defeated the demon king and humanity was able to escape the threat of the demon race. However, if you ask me if this has made human society more peaceful and happy, the answer is no. Rather, various problems were caused by the over items that were brought out from the Demon Kingdom to the human side in the confusion of the defeat of the Demon King.

“Responsibility? That’s the furthest thing from my mind.”

Kagehiko shrugged as he rolled the blue jewel in his hands.

“The reason I’m going after the items is because a woman asked me to. She said that if I collect enough of them I could do whatever I want with her. How could I say no to that offer?”

“You can’t possibly……take the items for that reason? To risk your life against so many powerful people?”

“Right.”

Kagehiko laughs, affirming Sana’s words.

Yeah, I know. It’s really silly to put your life on the line for something like this. But—

“Isn’t it interesting that you would risk your life for something so trivial?”

Whether you are a good person or a bad person, the end of life is the same for everyone. We all die and end up as bones. Since we all have the same destination, it would be a shame if we didn’t enjoy our detours to the fullest.

When Sana was taken aback, Kagehiko brought his face close to hers as if to kiss her.

“Enjoy waste and irrationality to the fullest. That’s the way of the Phantom Thief.”
