Chapter 80: Heart-to-Heart
In her previous life, Shi Meng already thought that boys her age were too immature, and now, reborn, this belief has only intensified.
Besides, is having a boyfriend more important than looking after her older brother? Of course not.
To this day, she hasn’t met a man who truly moves her, nor can she imagine what kind of man she might fall for.
Shi Meng has pretty much decided she’s going to stay single for life. Even if her brother eventually gets married, she plans to move in with him and his wife.
This way, her brother’s wife doesn’t even need to be particularly skilled at housekeeping since Shi Meng, as the sister, will be there to help.
All she needs is to be someone who listens to her brother, pleases him, and is beautiful enough to suit his tastes—someone who can dress up the way he likes, who will comply with his every request, someone who is willing to be a companion for him, almost like a pet.
In other words, her ideal “sister-in-law” would only need to be a gorgeous “trophy” wife—lovely to look at and to enjoy.
Actually, if she were part of his harem, she wouldn’t even need to worry about her sister-in-law at all.
No matter what kind of wife her brother might have, it wouldn’t matter. She’d hold an equal position anyway.
That’s it! By joining his harem, she could have a perfectly legitimate reason to stay by his side and take care of him!
This was Shi Meng’s sudden revelation.
However, right after she said it out loud, she suddenly felt shy as if she realized something embarrassing and quickly added, “I just want to keep taking care of you, that’s all… Brother, you could even think of me as a helper if that works for you.”
“Uh…”
What kind of brother treats his sister like a helper? But Shi Hai couldn’t say, “I don’t need you to take care of me,” either.
Otherwise, his sister might just become unhinged again.
Fortunately, Shi Hai didn’t have to respond to that, as their mom called out from the kitchen just then.
“Mengmeng, I took out the cornstarch for you, and I mixed the thickening sauce too.”
“Oh, thanks! I’ll be right there…” Shi Meng responded as she headed to the kitchen, but not before pressing her forehead against her brother’s and saying, “You don’t have to worry about me. I’ll support you all the way.”
Shi Hai’s house wasn’t very big, and the kitchen was close to the living room, and thus, Liu Zhenshan overheard the siblings’ conversation.
She hadn’t caught the earlier whispers but tuned in right when Shi Meng asked whether her brother would still be around after he got married.
Patting Shi Hai on the shoulder, Liu Zhenshan looked at him with a satisfied smile and said, “I found a great daughter, didn’t I?”
What a wonderful daughter—one who could even be a daughter-in-law. One girl, dual roles; how ideal.
Now she truly felt that adopting Shi Meng had been the wisest decision of her life.
Even if the harem plan didn’t work out, she at least had a “backup plan.” She didn’t have to worry about her son remaining single forever and the Shi family line dying out.
“Yes, she’s wonderful…”
A bit too wonderful, perhaps.
If possible, Shi Hai wished his sister would keep some distance. He didn’t need a sister who fussed over him as if she were his mom—in fact, even his own mom didn’t look after him as closely as she did…
After this chat, both his mother and sister seemed in great spirits, feeling as though a burden had been lifted.
Only Shi Hai carried a heavy feeling, like he was about to set foot on an irreversible path.
And so, his sister became his “wingman,” as did his mother, both of them ardent supporters of his “harem ambitions.”
In the future, they would continue to support Shi Hai’s lifelong happiness… and, at times when he might try to turn back, they’d promptly give him a nudge down the path of no return, right into the chaos.
A mischievous sister and an even more mischievous mother.
…
Meanwhile, Jian Sichun and Zhu Lingjie were debating whether they should visit Shi Hai’s place today.
They’d actually planned to visit earlier in the morning, but with Shi Meng, the younger sister, staying over, they worried she’d resent the intrusion.
Besides, Shi Meng had just arrived yesterday, and it felt right to give the three of them more time together.
Truthfully, Jian Sichun was feeling a bit deflated today.
She had hoped to bond with her future sister-in-law yesterday, but Shi Meng gave her no opening whatsoever, responding coldly to her attempts at friendliness.
Usually, it was Jian Sichun who would prompt Zhu Lingjie to drop by, so with her feeling down, the whole visit plan fizzled out.
Zhu Lingjie was a bit more reserved, though she felt it was already great to live across from Shi Hai. Waking him up in the morning was a nice bonus.
It was definitely better than her previous life when she hadn’t even met Shi Hai in college.
And after that failed confession attempt, if it hadn’t been for Jian Sichun’s intervention, Zhu Lingjie would have been devastated and crying alone in her room for days after her rejection.
Actually, Zhu Lingjie hadn’t even had a chance to properly thank Jian Sichun.
And aside from gratitude, she was also curious about why Jian Sichun had helped her.
Maybe she’d take the chance to ask over lunch…
Then it was lunchtime, and with just the two of them, they kept the meal simple.
They wanted to keep the calorie count low to avoid gaining weight. Girls are always mindful of their figures, and even a one-kilogram change in weight is a big deal.
As they ate, Zhu Lingjie finally gathered the courage to ask her question.
“Um, Sichun…”
“Hm?” Jian Sichun tilted her head and, before Zhu Lingjie could finish, said, “You can just call me Little Chun or Sisi.”
“Oh, alright, then I’ll call you Sisi. And you can call me Lingling…” Even though she said it herself, Zhu Lingjie still felt a bit shy.
Up until now, only older family members had called her Lingling; no one her own age had ever called her that.
“Mm-hmm! Calling me Sichun always sounded weird, I got teased for it a lot in elementary school. My dad said it has a deeper meaning, about cherishing kindness, but most people only think of ‘romance,’ right?”
Although Shi Hai did call her Sichun.
But she didn’t mind hearing her name from Shi Hai, and she also knew he wasn’t one for mushy nicknames. He’d only use one for someone truly close to him.
In her last life, it took her years to go from a formal name to a nickname with him. Shi Hai even joked that her name suited her perfectly, saying her father had chosen well.
“Sisi, the other day… Why did you help me?”
“That day? Oh, you mean when I slapped Shi Hai?”
“Mm… I could tell you regretted it, but you still went through with it…”
Jian Sichun pointed her chopsticks at herself as she answered, “Because I’m a fool.”
“…Huh?”
“I’m not as smart as you, Lingling. My grades in school were terrible, and I only got into this university through an art program.”
Does that… have anything to do with it? Zhu Lingjie was still confused as Jian Sichun continued.
“So yeah, I’m not good at figuring out complicated things. Most of the time, I just follow my instincts.” Jian Sichun didn’t hold back.
“I don’t really know why I did it that day, honestly. If I had to say, it was like my body just moved on its own.”
Zhu Lingjie understood, somewhat.
By now, she knew that Jian Sichun was a kind-hearted girl who cared for others. But she still should’ve had the option to “look the other way.”
Zhu Lingjie bit her lip, finally asking the other half of her question, the part she struggled to understand.
“But… Sisi, you like Shi Hai too, don’t you?”
She truly considered Jian Sichun a close friend. That’s why she wanted to talk about this openly and honestly.
