Chapter 114: The Fifth Layer
Sunday, September 16th.
Liu Zhenshan yawned as she got up and went into the living room, only to find all the kids there.
Shi Hai, as usual, was sitting at the edge of the sofa reading a book. Meanwhile, Jian Sichun, Zhu Lingjie, and Shi Meng were on the carpet playing a game of “Dou dizhu.”
The once-quiet house now had several lively young girls, making the atmosphere much different.
Seeing this scene, Liu Zhenshan felt her mood soar.
If only there were a few more children around, it would be perfect…
It would truly be her dream of a bustling, multi-generational family come true.
The only pity was that their house was still too small. If it were bigger with more rooms, she’d hope Jian Sichun and Zhu Lingjie could move in, too.
But what Liu Zhenshan didn’t realize was that this harmony was only surface-level.
The conversation Shi Hai had with them after she went to bed last night had disturbed each of their thoughts.
It was as if they were all playing a card game and had planned out their moves, only for Shi Hai to suddenly interrupt and say, “Actually, you’ve all misunderstood the rules. Let me tell you what the real rules are.” This left them all confused, not knowing how to play their hands anymore.
So, even though the house now seemed full of beautiful girls, in reality, an invisible wall stood between Shi Hai and them.
This was also why the three girls were playing cards without including Shi Hai.
Once again, Shi Hai found himself isolated.
But for him, this kind of social distance was just right. Previously, they had been far too close—especially Jian Sichun, who almost always initiated some form of physical contact whenever they met.
Even though Liu Zhenshan was very perceptive, she hadn’t noticed the subtle distance growing between her son and the girls.
She only thought Shi Hai was hopeless at seizing opportunities… She sighed inwardly: You’re given a chance, but you won’t take it!
The girls came over every day, bringing warmth to the house, clearly wanting to interact with the person they liked. But this wooden-headed boy just sat by reading his book… Acting aloof and mysterious? Seriously?
Stop flattering yourself!
Girls prefer guys who are proactive!
If you’re not handsome enough, don’t keep such a cold face!
A girlfriend doesn’t just fall from the sky like wishing upon a star—it’s something you talk your way into!
What? You’re relying entirely on the girl’s affection?
Her son wasn’t worried, but Liu Zhenshan certainly was.
She was terrified the girls would lose patience with Shi Hai’s lack of response and eventually give up on pursuing him.
Even though Mengmeng was a guaranteed fallback, if the two “future daughters-in-law” who had practically delivered themselves to the doorstep ended up leaving, she might just strangle her useless son.
Talking about wanting a harem but scaring everyone away—how absurd!
He owed every manipulative player out there an apology. What a disgrace to the “art”!
During breakfast, Liu Zhenshan decided to lend a helping hand.
“Shi Hai, what time did you come back last night?”
“Close to eleven.”
“Wow, it’s rare to see you stay out so late. You must’ve had a great time, huh?”
“Well, not that great… but it was satisfying, for sure.”
The mental back-and-forth with Tian Shui—predicting her predictions and peeling back layers of thought—had been thoroughly engaging for Shi Hai.
“Then why didn’t you bring Little Chun and Lingling along? Isn’t it rude to leave friends out?”
“Uh…”
Bring them along to Senior Tian Shui’s house? Even Shi Hai, as dense as he was, wouldn’t dream of doing something like that.
How clueless would you have to be?
Creating a love triangle where there wasn’t one before? That’s brain-dead behavior…
If someone actually did that, the girls would have every right to turn yandere and start wielding axes later on.
“So, why don’t you take them out today, then?”
“I don’t mind…”
Shi Hai shrugged and looked at the three girls.
Even though Jian Sichun and Zhu Lingjie had come over early in the morning, Shi Hai could tell their spirits were low today.
They both had faint dark circles under their eyes, clearly from a bad night’s sleep.
Shi Meng seemed fine, likely because she knew more about the situation.
The real question was what Jian Sichun and Zhu Lingjie were thinking right now. Even Shi Hai couldn’t guess.
“Alright, let’s go out together this afternoon.”
Surprisingly, it was Zhu Lingjie who answered first this time.
Then Zhu Lingjie pulled Jian Sichun into the plan.
“Sisi, you should come with us too.”
“Ah… okay.”
Jian Sichun nodded absentmindedly, still feeling completely lost.
Zhu Lingjie smiled and turned to Shi Meng.
“Mengmeng, how about you? Are you coming with us?”
“…No, you all go ahead,” Shi Meng replied, her voice calm.
Shi Meng was good at reading the room.
Although she wanted to go out with her brother, she recognized this was an opportunity for the three of them to have a proper conversation.
Initially, Shi Meng didn’t want those two women getting close to her brother, mainly because she didn’t want him to encounter any accidents.
But now, the future seems to have shifted entirely.
For starters, it was becoming clear that the women in his life might not have been the actual cause of her brother’s future misfortune.
The person who sent Shi Meng back to the past—Bai Yue—likely assumed that women were the reason for Shi Hai’s accident, which is why she sent them back in time and forbade them from approaching him.
But why go to the trouble of sending them back to the past? Couldn’t she have returned herself and stopped them directly? Why go through the convoluted step of sending the women back only to prevent them from getting close later?
Shi Meng thought, Anyone with a functioning brain would see the flaw in that logic.
So it was highly possible that Bai Yue had already tried doing so and found it ineffective.
Just like “Shi Hai’s accident nine years from now is destined to happen,” it was also very likely that “Shi Hai being with one of these women is destined to happen.”
If you combine these two facts, it suggests that “in a certain future, Shi Hai is fated to be with a woman, and this ultimately leads to his accident.”
And yet, there’s no way to guarantee the same thing won’t happen again.
In other words, any woman who has ever been romantically involved with Shi Hai has now become a “hidden landmine.”
This explains why, in her previous life, Shi Meng never saw her brother dating anyone, but after his accident, a woman called her and claimed that Shi Hai was harmed because of a woman.
So what about now? Why isn’t anyone stopping it this time?
Could it be because… Bai Yue realized her earlier hypothesis was wrong?
In other words, new information had come to light.
Shi Hai’s accident nine years later might have nothing to do with whether or not these reborn women approach him. That’s why Bai Yue no longer intervened.
What’s the latest intel, then? Why is Shi Hai’s accident nine years from now an inevitability?
And how many loops has this timeline gone through already?
These are all questions that can only be answered by asking Bai Yue herself.
That’s why her brother said he needed to meet Bai Yue first and figure out what to do after that. Indeed, only by meeting her would he understand how the situation had evolved.
The clever Shi Meng had already reached the fifth layer of understanding after hearing her brother’s explanation the previous day, achieving the same level of insight as him.
