Chapter 28: Chapter 28:Objective, Hive City
After washing the car with holy water, the residual slippery liquid flowed down through the crevices. Due to the lack of light and heat for evaporation, Zhang Ge had to carefully dry these narrow gaps himself to prevent the water from seeping deeper.
He hadn't been wiping for long before he felt something was off—why was it getting increasingly fragrant?
However, after pulling out his plasma pistol and scanning the surroundings, he found nothing unusual.
Suspicious, Zhang Ge still drove the car into the building filled with numerous vehicles. He locked all the doors to guard against potential enemy attacks. In the dark and slightly cramped environment among the rows of vehicles, he used the glow of the plasma to affix segments of sacred prayers to various parts of the car with wax seals.
When he finished attaching the last one and took out the ink, said to be mixed with the blood and ashes of a pure person, along with a quill, a scraping sound suddenly rang out.
Zhang Ge followed the source of the sound and noticed that the car's four tires had rotated slightly, producing the noise as they rubbed against the ground.
Is it asking me to write on the wheels?
But he didn't mind where he wrote—as long as the Machine Spirit was happy.
As he muttered, "Is this deep enough here?" and "Do you want to be written here?"
While comforting the machine spirit, he inscribed various scriptures on all four wheels of the vehicle.
It seemed that the machine spirit, having been overly protected in a noble household before and recently driven through harsh terrains, was now exceptionally delighted to receive maintenance. With every stroke Zhang Ge made, the vehicle's body would tremble slightly.
After finishing, Zhang Ge stood up contentedly, surveying the vehicle. He observed the holy water that had not yet completely dried, trickling down from the black characters, and the neatly arranged seals.
Huh, I've got quite an artistic touch.
After admiring his masterpiece, he once again took his seat in the driver's seat.
Indeed, the driving experience was vastly different now. If the previous handling felt like an eager student trying to prove themselves but still somewhat inexperienced, now it was like a class monitor who knew exactly which part of the blackboard to clean with just a glance.
After driving back into the church courtyard, the fatigue from continuous high-intensity operations and vigilance finally caught up with him in this rare moment of leisure.
Zhang Ge fought off his drowsiness to close the city gates on both walls, then returned to the vehicle. He took out the packaging from a previous ration pack, tore it open, and wrote a message on the silver inner lining, which roughly conveyed the following:
You two can go wherever you want after finishing your tasks; no need to ask me. I'm going to sleep first.
After writing, he placed it on the driver's seat and lay down on the back seat, allowing sleep to blur his consciousness.
In his dream, he saw the Emperor, saw himself making a psychic call to harshly reprimand two nuns, demanding why they were wasting time on a mere grunt, and then being mercilessly abandoned in the wilderness, swallowed by the pursuing Chaos army.
...What's wrong?
In his dazed state, Zhang Ge wasn't sure if he had actually spoken those words aloud. He only felt the sunlight flooding his eyelids, trying to pierce through his pupils, and something persistently shaking him.
After some time, as his scattered thoughts began to coalesce, Zhang Ge finally realized he had woken up. He reached out, swatting away the thing that had been shaking him, and mumbled groggily:
"Huh? What's going on?"
He was annoyed, having been interrupted at the climax of a good dream, but Zhang Ge still forced his heavy eyelids open.
Most of his view was occupied by Amilia, who had leaned over to shake him awake with her hand. Beyond her, outside the car window, were... scraps? Surrounding their vehicle.
Zhang Ge rubbed his eyes and leaned closer to the window.
The figures seated on them were still human, though at first glance he had mistaken them for Orks.
Amilia's explanatory voice followed:
"We're heading toward the nearest hive city, where there's the highest chance of finding organized forces. But now... a group of bandits has surrounded us."
Zhang Ge was baffled. Was this really a problem?
"Just kill them all, no?"
"We could, but the vehicle might get damaged. They have anti-tank weapons, and we're still some distance from our destination."
After pushing Amilia's shoulders to make her sit back, Zhang Ge squeezed through the middle gap and glanced toward the dashboard. Seeing the numbers displayed there, he chuckled and said:
"If you're bad, just practice more."
With that, Zhang Ge reached out and patted Dominica's head—she was wearing force-feedback armor now, so patting anywhere else probably wouldn't register—and then moved aside, gesturing for her to take the back seat.
Soon, the two had switched places.
In the driver's seat, Zhang Ge succinctly commanded:
"Full speed."
As soon as the words left his mouth, the needle on the dashboard shot to its maximum value like a mercury thermometer plunged into boiling water.
However, the vehicle's speed was far from being limited by the dashboard's upper limit. Amid the suddenly intensified roar of the engine, the four wheels spun, propelling the vehicle forward like an arrow while multiplying the dust kicked up by the friction.
The sudden surge in speed caught the bandits off guard. In that brief moment of confusion, Zhang Ge had already driven the vehicle straight into the side of a heavily modified truck that was blocking the road ahead.
At such high speed, the lightweight armored vehicle, with its considerable weight, struck the truck's side and rear, causing the entire truck to lose balance. After wobbling along a twisted path, the truck flipped over, scattering countless parts from its body before finally landing on its side.
It was precisely when the truck flipped onto its side and Zhang Ge steered to one side to avoid it that the anti-tank rocket launched from the bandits' launcher behind them. Originally intended to hit Zhang Ge's vehicle, the rocket's trajectory naturally extended after his evasive maneuver and slammed directly into the overturned truck.
The explosion erupted, sparks flying everywhere, and the rocket added fuel to the fire of the already damaged vehicle.
As he angrily loaded a second rocket, he realized that the incredibly fast car had already moved out of effective range. Without any tracking capability, firing again would only waste another rocket.
Glancing at the shrinking bandit garbage truck in the rearview mirror, Zhang Ge casually asked, "Which hive city are we heading to?"
"Yakaolan Hive City, with a population of around 600 million."
Six hundred million people crammed into a single city—just hearing those words was enough to imagine the hellish scene it must be.
Even in peacetime, let alone during the chaos of an invasion, it was sure to bring Zhang Ge endless surprises.
Indeed, achieving one's dreams couldn't rely on others; it had to be earned through one's own efforts.
Zhang Ge felt his future was as bright as the sunlight at that moment, and the car seemed to speed up even more.
"We'll be entering the hive city's industrial exhaust pollution zone in a while. Low visibility—remember to slow down."
"Got it."
