Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Amelia
Seeing the appearance of the holy statue, Zhang Ge slightly furrowed his brows. Although he felt no physical nausea or discomfort, such an act of blasphemy against humanity... at least for a fellow normal human being, it was still deeply repulsive.
After scanning the interior environment, Zhang Ge also entered the church and approached the nearest nun's corpse. Witnessing yet another act of desecration, he pulled the chaotic scripture from the cold, stiff hands that held it.
Of course, he had no intention of opening it to read. Instead, he took out a crucifix from his bag and pressed it against the book's cover.
Though it no longer emitted the exaggerated light of several meters as before, upon touching the cover, the crucifix caused the surface to burn intensely. This burning did not harm Zhang Ge's hand, nor did it produce any heat, but it gradually spread across the entire book.
Soon, the chaotic scripture was purified back to its original form—an ordinary imperial scripture.
"I'll go deeper inside to take a look."
Seeing Sister Amelia in a visibly disturbed state, Zhang Ge forcefully placed the crucifix into her tightly clenched palm, refraining from further interference. After signaling his intentions, he turned and entered the corridor on the side.
At this point, offering words of comfort would be meaningless. Perhaps allowing her to personally purify her former sisters would bring her some solace.
Upon reaching the door, he fumbled to turn on the light.
As expected, the enemies who had engaged in combat with the sisters had not repaired any areas other than the main hall, which served as their "artistic canvas." The scene was littered with bloodstained craters, splatters of blood, scattered fragments of armor, chunks of flesh, and the bodies of both civilians and Astra Militarum soldiers.
Approaching one of the craters, Zhang Ge noticed that the explosive projectiles used had an extremely high rate of fire and precision. Without deliberate control from the user, several steel-piercing rounds had embedded themselves into the same spot.
After further investigation, Zhang Ge discovered three charred marks on the floor of the corridor, as if something had struck vertically from above. However, looking up, he found no visible damage to the ceiling.
Chaos elites, corrupted scriptures, deliberately restored environments, charred marks, high-velocity explosive weapons.
Suddenly, Zhang Ge recalled something in his mind that could leave such traces.
A tactical squad of Chaos Terminators, accompanied by at least one Chaos Sorcerer, had obtained the coordinates of the church. After preliminary reconnaissance, the Terminators had teleported directly into the main structure of the church. Once the battle concluded, the Sorcerer had entered the premises.
The fatal wounds on the bodies of the sisters he had seen earlier in the main hall were all on the front, corresponding to the breaches in their armor, while their backs remained largely unscathed. This was true even for the sisters who were not primarily combatants.
In other words, the sisters were aware of the enemy's presence and were on high alert, to the extent of being armored at all times, and were able to launch a counterattack the moment these enemies entered, without exposing their backs to the foe.
However, after intense exchanges of fire, even in the narrow terrain of frontal combat, the sisters' resistance was ultimately broken.
It is highly unlikely that a powerful demon could directly manifest within the sanctum, where faith is so dense. As for the possibility of prior infiltration, the sisters of the convent are not as bloated and sluggish as the institutions of the state religion, especially in a frontline church that has further streamlined and screened its personnel.
But if Chaos Terminators had teleported directly into the church, it would make perfect sense.
Moreover, since Chaos can hardly reproduce Terminator power armor, those who possess such formidable equipment are either veterans of ten thousand years of war or powerful individuals who have slain and replaced the former. Their worth is exceptionally high.
A tactical squad, consisting of three Chaos Terminators, teleporting into various internal locations, would have the capability to completely annihilate the hundred or so sisters and the few Astra Militarum present.
However, such formidable warriors would only serve the most powerful legions or warbands of Chaos, indicating that the current situation is worse than imagined. An enemy of at least Chaos Lord level has arrived in this theater.
Proceeding further inside, Zhang Ge found more corpses and blood in other areas but neither discovered new suspicious points nor encountered enemy attacks. If nothing unexpected had occurred, it should align with the earlier speculation, and the enemy had indeed already left.
Zhang Ge couldn't help but feel regret for not encountering those enemies face-to-face, but since they had already departed, there was nothing to be done. Now, he needed to return to the main hall to discuss with Sister Amilia what to do next.
Approaching the door, he opened it a crack... Wait, why is it so bright?
Zhang Ge pushed the door fully open but halted his step forward.
In the main hall, the sisters' bodies had been gathered into a pile, with roaring flames consuming them. He could see Sister Amilia kneeling in front of the pyre, which was completely engulfed in fire.
But what made Zhang Ge stop in his tracks was not this scene.
Rather, it was the cross that was transforming the blazing pillar of scorching heat into a radiant golden hue. The nuns' bodies were being incinerated one by one, but their bones were gradually turning silvery white within the golden flames.
This inferno was not as gentle as Zhang Ge had previously perceived; instead, it was extremely violent. Even though he was standing by the side door, he could feel the unbearable heat. Although the flames seemed to burn nothing but flesh, they were slowly charring Sister Amilia, who knelt before them.
Yet the nun remained motionless, maintaining her posture of kneeling with hands clasped in prayer, until the last nun's body turned to ash.
As two clear tears streamed down from the eyes of the "charred corpse" in front of the fire, the piled-up remains of over a hundred silvery-white bones gradually turned to dust, which then flew toward the nun, slowly coalescing into a massive silver-white greatsword.
It was at this moment.
The "charred corpse's" head suddenly began to sprout silvery-white hair at a visible rate, quickly growing to chin length.
The charred shell on her body also began to fall off piece by piece, revealing a pristine, flawless body free of any scars.
As the last piece of charred skin fell away, Amilia slowly opened her eyes, no longer concealed by the white cloth, her golden pupils radiating a dazzling brilliance.
