Intern at S.T.A.R. Labs

Chapter 4: Chp 4: And they were Benchmates

The daunting challenge now being overcome, our protagonist walks with his new comrade to his now workplace. From the medium sized lab(from the standard of the S.T.A.R. Labs ground floor) now to the main area. On their way Adrian noticed the janitor being missing but thought not much of it, 'Must be on his break' he shrugged. Turning the corner towards an entrance beaming light all the way across the hallway they enter another room with staff and scientists working; computers ,TV screens covering the walls displaying each and every possible details about the Particle Accelerator and some other stuff, separate areas with chemical equipment connected to make a whole.

"Welcome to the Cortex. This is where the magic happens. Well not exactly –"

"This is where the magic is conceived you may say" she interrupted. Another fair maiden, brunette, long hair, petite with a labcoat.

"Always helping me out, this is our resident bio-chem expert Dr. Caitlin Snow." Cisco pointed to her

"Pleasure to make your acquaintance. I'm Adrian Brown and I'll be under your care Dr. Snow".

"Welcome aboard Adrian, call me Caitlin " as Caitlin shook his hand, 'Dam her smile is cute'.

"Where's Dr. Wells , I thought the conference was over by now?" asked Cisco.

"Well, he might be occupied with some eccentric interviewers. You know he loves to argue with those types of people.. and winning ". Almost immediately her gaze shifted and her face brightened "Why don't we ask?" there comes another man almost as if in response to that conversation

"Ronnie dude". Both him and Cisco did a handshake manoeuvre.

"Hey beautiful." "Hey handsome." He kissed Caitlin as if it was a normal hello.

"Yup still awkward, guys PDA much?" Cisco pointed .

"Get used to it Cisco. And you must be the intern. Hi, I'm Ronnie Raymond , I fix some stuff here and there."

"You're too humble, he's actually the lead mechanical engineer for the Particle Accelerator".

"Cooool, nice to meet you, I'm Adrian ". 'Shit I thought he was just a regular worker here'.

"Congrats bro, I'd knew you'd get the job." Ronnie said patting him on the back.

"You know him?" asked Caitlin and Cisco, in unison. Ronnie goes on about their interaction and the help provided by Adrian while he laughed nervously not knowing how to deal with compliments.

"Thanks, I look forward to working with you all." He said almost in a bow now.

"Alright, now that you've met everyone let's show you your workbench" . As both Cisco and Adrian walked away the couple stood there, adoring them.

"You know, when Cisco first came in, he was just as nervous as him." as she smiled like a proud elder sister.

"It's good to see that the future will be handled by such bright kids Dr. Snow—"

"—And we'll be right there with them, Mr. Raymond."

"Speaking of future, I'll go check on Dr. Wells, we need to prepare for the conference after-party as well. Later honey".

Going back to our nerd Bros, finally going to their workplace. The fabrication lab where most of not all of S.T.A.R. labs equipment was made. It's rare to have private stations for each worker in a manufacturing unit, but this was S.T.A.R. Labs after all. They walk besides several giant machines, each looking more complex yet varied than the other, handled by experts with great precision and skill. The workbenches now in sight, they see a man typing away at his laptop with wrinkles on his forehead. The workbench was rather cluttered but with half of it being completely empty, for the new intern most likely. As they reached the desk a name tag appears, 'Harold

"Harold Peterson, RnD, guess he's your senior now Adrian." Cisco mentioned. Although this Harold hadn't even looked up from his laptop, just a nod and a 'uh huh'.

"He's cleared space for you so you can setup anytime. Someone will later come and give you your work for the day, standard data entry for a few days while you catch up to speed and here, the list of the equipment labels in here , go through their manuals within the week. Chiao" .

"Hi, I'm Adrian, guess I'll be in your care Mr. Peterson." . Still no response. So he sat down, solemnly.

A few minutes passed and someone came gave Adrian the credentials, another temporary ID card till he gets the official one and a few files to be digitised.

"Damn, does everyone get submerged under this much paperwork everyday?" another attempt to strike up a conversation, ignored. 'Guess he's not much of a talker'.

Two hours of mind-numbing work later Adrian thought to take a break. Looking to his side , his supervisor had just let out his second sound in hours, a heavy sigh of relief. Harold now started reading a magazine to chill out a bit. 'Must be something he likes', so he thought of taking a peak and something immediately caught his eye, 'Harmonics' and he just so happened to bring one of his prototypes related to it. Although it wasn't in working condition due to a part still in use at the conference, it was still impressive for the right eyes. Adrian cooked up a scheme. He started unpacking stuff from his backpack and took out the prototype as well and immediately he felt Harold's gaze on it. He then stood up and took the files to that person to report his work completion

After handing over the files and getting some manuals from them he made his way back, stopped a few meters before and observed from afar. It worked, Harold was examining his prototype, that too with a smile on his face, it is always a joy to see someone who enjoys something you've made, same for cooking and also for engineers. As he heard footsteps Harold put down the prototype and started going through his files again as if he wasn't just admiring the device a few moments ago.

"So, you fancy my prototype?" said Adrian taking a seat.

"It's quiet well put together, for an amateur. There are many modifications necessary but it's a decent phase 1 prototype ." said Harold. The first whole sentence he's spoken for hours. A tough nut to crack, but tougher the challenge sweeter the reward.

"Really? Can you give me some suggestions please?" Adrian beamed.

"If you insist. Well first you should take into account all background noises not just white noise , but also brown and pink depending on the environment, next you.."

Now having broken the ice Adrian had another comrade. Follow along to see what happens next.
