Chapter 5: Chapter 5 Is Marrying Me Painful?
Xu Jinzhi's appearance had already caused a bit of a stir in the classroom, and her actions only sparked more students to start whispering to one another.
Hearing the voices of his classmates around him and feeling their scrutinizing gazes, Xie Yanchuan felt somewhat embarrassed. He pursed his lips slightly and gave Xu Jinzhi a nod with a feigned composure, then walked towards the podium.
"Alright, class is starting," Xie Yanchuan said indifferently. When his eyes met Xu Jinzhi's, he quickly looked away, pretending he hadn't seen anything.
Xie Yanchuan never took roll call because his classes had a high rate of retakes. As long as the student didn't need to retake the class, he didn't care if they attended or not, so he simply skipped the roll call.
Because Xie Yanchuan's classes were quite difficult, even the students who initially were distracted trying to guess the relationship between the teacher and the girl soon focused on their studies as Xie Yanchuan started his lecture in earnest.
On the other hand, it was Xie Yanchuan who several times had to force himself to concentrate. Xu Jinzhi kept staring at him, which inevitably drew his attention to her.
Xu Jinzhi kept her gaze fixed on Xie Yanchuan, and even though she didn't understand a word of his lecture, it didn't stop her from watching him. Then, whenever Xie Yanchuan looked her way, she'd smile at him.
Without exaggeration, Xie Yanchuan thought this was the most nervous he had been in all three years of teaching!
When the class ended, the gossiping souls in the classroom rekindled, and instead of leaving, everyone stayed put, awaiting interaction between the two main characters.
Xu Jinzhi wanted to tease Xie Yanchuan, so she stared directly at him until he started to look somewhat embarrassed.
Suddenly, Xu Jinzhi felt she was being somewhat unkind. Wasn't she supposed to treat Xie Yanchuan better this time around?
She bullied Xie Yanchuan the moment they met, and she felt guilty for it.
Thus, Xu Jinzhi stood up and walked down from the last row of the classroom. Within a few seconds, she was standing in front of Xie Yanchuan.
After hesitating for a moment, Xie Yanchuan said, "Let's talk in my office."
"Okay," Xu Jinzhi agreed without hesitation.
Xie Yanchuan then walked towards the door, and Xu Jinzhi naturally followed him. No sooner had they stepped out of the classroom than the room erupted into commotion.
Hearing the noise, Xu Jinzhi turned back for a glance and saw some students curiously following them out. When Xu Jinzhi looked back, they didn't hide.
It was unclear whether it was because Xu Jinzhi was too attractive or because Xie Yanchuan had always been a notable figure at the school, but on their way to the office, Xu Jinzhi noticed many people couldn't help but take a second look.
Speaking of which, A University was her alma mater. In her past life, she had returned to A University several times for official business, not to see Xie Yanchuan.
This was technically the first time in both her lives that she had come to A University because of Xie Yanchuan.
Arriving at Xie Yanchuan's office, normally he didn't permit closing the door when there were visitors, but today was different, and he hesitated.
Eventually, Xie Yanchuan closed the door anyway, feeling that Xu Jinzhi must have come to talk about the arranged marriage.
Once the door was closed, Xie Yanchuan approached, gesturing for Xu Jinzhi to sit first, then politely asked, "Miss Xu, would you like tea or coffee?"
"No trouble needed, just water is fine," Xu Jinzhi replied.
Xie Yanchuan nodded, turned to pour a cup of warm water, and sat down as well. "Is there something you wanted to talk about today, Miss Xu?"
Xu Jinzhi hesitated, "Well, there isn't anything particularly important."
After a brief silence, Xu Jinzhi continued, "You know about our families arranging a marriage between us, right?"
Xu Jinzhi figured Xie Yanchuan must have already known; otherwise, his reaction to seeing her earlier wouldn't have been what it was.
Sure enough, Xie Yanchuan nodded, "I know."
"What are your thoughts on it?" Xu Jinzhi inquired.
In her previous life, her initial arranged marriage partner was Xie Linchuan who was not over his ex-girlfriend. She could not tolerate such a man, so she switched her arranged partner before the wedding.
And at that time, she was quite dissatisfied with the Xie Family. Xie Yanchuan was merely a choice she made out of necessity, and she had no interest in considering his feelings then.
Xie Yanchuan remained silent, not answering the question because he couldn't define his own feelings.
He neither rejected nor liked Xu Jinzhi.
In short, an arranged marriage is just that, no big deal.
Seeing Xie Yanchuan remain silent, Xu Jinzhi guessed his thoughts and continued, "Let me rephrase my question. Would marrying me cause you great pain?"
Xie Yanchuan furrowed his brow slightly, as if the question required careful consideration.
Xu Jinzhi patiently waited until Xie Yanchuan shook his head, saying uncertainly, "No."
He had thought it over the previous night. An arranged marriage was no big deal; they could just be like his parents, showing mutual respect or keeping out of each other's way.
But pain? That wasn't part of it; at most, there would be some concerns.
"That's good!" Xu Jinzhi's face lit up with a smile.
At this point, Xie Yanchuan had no idea what Xu Jinzhi was happy about, and she didn't explain. She took out her phone and said earnestly, "Since we're going to be married, should we add each other on WeChat?"
Seemingly a reasonable request, Xie Yanchuan also took out his phone, found his WeChat QR code, and let Xu Jinzhi scan it, successfully adding each other.
Having added each other on WeChat, they naturally exchanged phone numbers next.
"Are you busy later on?" Xu Jinzhi asked.
"There are still some unfinished tasks in the lab..." Xie Yanchuan didn't finish his sentence but directly inquired, "Is there something else?"
"I initially wanted to invite you to dinner together. Since we're getting married, we should get to know each other. But since you're busy, let's do it another day," Xu Jinzhi said considerately.
"Okay," Xie Yanchuan nodded. Truthfully, he was having a bit of trouble keeping up with Xu Jinzhi's pace.
Afterwards, they fell silent. Xie Yanchuan was always a man of few words and never felt awkward about not speaking.
However, now in the same room as Xu Jinzhi, even a short silence made him uncomfortable, feeling like something was slightly off.
