Chapter 4: A Quiet Exchange

"Senior Danzo."

"Orochimaru."

We stare at each other for a moment.

Then he speaks. "You will never be Hokage."

"I know."

His eye narrow slightly. "Then you should support me."

"You know it's useless. Minato will be chosen in the end. Sensei isn't ready to give up control."

Danzo falls silent, realizing there's nothing he can do. His schemes won't work this time.

The new generation, especially the commoners, will vote for Minato. Jiraiya's supporters will, too.

The Sarutobi clan will follow Sensei the same will happen with clans of other elders.

The Nara, Yamanaka, and Akimichi clans have good relations with Minato, and they always align with the Hokage.

And some other clans will follow.

Minato is going to win by a landslide.

"I heard you're interested in forbidden jutsu."

"I am," I nod, knowing he must have heard it from Sensei.

"I can give it to you."

I meet his gaze. "What do you need me to do?" Not that I really need to ask I already know the answer.

"I want you to join Root."

I don't answer right away. According to the anime, I did work for him for quite some time met Kabuto, got Senju Hashirama's DNA, created Yamato, gained forbidden techniques, and much more.

It wasn't a bad deal.

While with gacha I can get resources from other worlds to improve myself, would I leave the ones from this one?

Definitely not.

"Ok," I answer.

It was not a loss since there were many things I could learn from him. I would never underestimate him, having seen his policies firsthand during two wars.

His military and political insights were no less than Sensei's.

And since there was no loss on my part, accepting this offer was an easy decision.

Danzo studied me, his single visible eye sharp. He was waiting, maybe expecting me to hesitate, to ask for reassurances.

I didn't.

"When do I start?" I asked instead.

A slight nod. "Immediately."

No unnecessary words, no attempts to convince me further. He knew I had already made up my mind.

"Follow me," he said, turning on his heel.

I followed without a word. Root was not new to me. In my memories, I had spent years working under him, gaining knowledge, seizing opportunities. This time, I had even more reason to make use of what he could offer.

As we walked, I glanced at him. "What do you expect from me?"

Danzo didn't slow down. "Loyalty."

I let out a quiet chuckle. "You know that's not something I can give ."

He didn't respond immediately. "Then consider this an exchange. Knowledge for service."

That was fine. For now.

I walked beside him in silence for a moment before speaking again. "Do everyone part of root have curse mark?" I asked despite knowing that most of Root bore his seal.

Danzo didn't stop walking, but I caught the slight flicker of his eye toward me. "Most, not all," he admitted. "Some choose to serve without it."

Of course they do. There were those who didn't need to be forced, who followed him because they genuinely believed in his vision. Shinobi who saw Konoha's survival as something that required sacrifices, secrets, silence, shadows.

His influence wasn't just through control, it was ideology. A loyalty drilled in so deep that even without seals, his followers would obey without hesitation.

In that sense, his brainwashing was second only to Sensei's.

"And me?" I pressed, a smirk tugging at my lips.

Danzo gave the barest hint of amusement. "I don't believe you would allow such a thing."

I chuckled. "Good. Then we understand each other."

It was an interesting game we were playing two people who knew the rules too well, both aware of what the other wanted.

....

"So, Orochimaru didn't reject Danzo?" Hiruzen muttered to himself, his eyes lingering on the Hokage Rock.

He stared at the faces carved into stone, each representing a leader who had shaped Konoha, some through strength, others through sacrifice. The weight of their legacies hung heavy in the air.

"Konoha survived another war," he mused, his voice low, almost detached. "Though there were losses, we didn't lose." His gaze hardened as he spoke, and the flicker of pain in his eyes quickly vanished. The village had endured, but the cost was becoming too clear.

"The Uzumaki were finished in the last war," he continued, a cold note to his words. "The Senju were all but wiped out in this one."

Hiruzen's fingers twitched, remembering the names that had once stood at the heart of the village. The bloodlines and clans that had kept Konoha strong, but now, they were nothing more than echoes.

"And now," he whispered, as though the words carried a weight only he understood. "Only the Uchiha remain."

The silence stretched between us, the truth of those words sitting uncomfortably in the air. Konoha, built on the foundation of clans, now leaned on a single, fragile pillar. The Uchiha, a clan that had never fully fit in, still stood, but how much longer could they remain loyal?

Hiruzen finally turned his gaze away from the rock, focusing on something in the distance. "Don't worry, Sensei," he said, the words somehow hollow. "Your legacy will be passed on."

There was no doubt in his voice, yet a certain coldness lingered in the air. The future of the village would be molded, not just by legacy, but by those willing to shape it, no matter the cost. And Hiruzen, more than anyone, understood the price of that power.

After all, the legacy of a Hokage was a title, but the real power? That was in the hands of those who knew how to control the game.
