Chapter 19: Ivan or Gildarts
As Gildarts turned his head, the prisoner who had just screamed scrambled back to his cell in a panic, "That guy is Gildarts! Hurry back!!!"
The other prisoners froze, still processing the revelation, but a few who knew began to gasp in shock. "What?! Fairy Tail? That most destructive guild? Are you kidding me?! How could someone like him be here?! Run!!!"
"Huh? Why run? There are so many of us. Does he really think he can kill us all? Idiot! Don't drag me into your death wish!"
Chaos broke out among the prisoners; some darted back to their cells to save their skins, while others, undeterred by fear, attempted to escape.
Gildarts, on the other hand, wore an indifferent expression as he waited for most of the scared prisoners to return to their cells.
He glanced at those fleeing in all directions.
Gildarts stood his ground, gathering his magical energy as his clothes and cape began to ripple. The pure accumulation of magic swirled around his right arm, twisting and spiraling.
With a smirk, Gildarts raised his right arm and smashed it down into the prison floor, "Crushing Evil, Spreading the Truth!"
Boom——!!!!
The floating black cube, the magical prison known as Black Vox, was instantly shattered.
A wild force erupted, sweeping through the surroundings, as the ground buckled and collapsed. All the escaping prisoners stumbled, and one by one, they were struck by Gildarts' raging magic, rendering them unconscious in an instant.
Gildarts stood up satisfied, "Done."
From a distance, Gray watched the scene, stunned, "So powerful. Just relying on magic alone...."
Gaal couldn't help but hold his forehead and mutter softly, "Not again."
Gray was still trying to comprehend when Gaal sighed quietly, "How much do you think this will cost?"
Gray was taken aback and glanced toward the magical prison Black Vox, swallowing hard.
The prison, which had been floating in the air, was now slowly descending. After being smashed right through by Gildarts' strike, the upper and lower surfaces were almost entirely shattered, and the surroundings were affected as well.
Just thinking about it made Gray's scalp tingle.
Gaal's words were barely audible, and given the distance, the others in the magical prison didn't catch what he said. However, Gildarts, standing by the prison, heard everything clearly and froze in place.
Seeing the warden Toki Andebar approach with a beaming smile to thank him, Gildarts' smile stiffened as he quickly brushed him off and hurried after Gaal and Gray, not even waiting for thanks.
Warden Toki Andebar and Guroku Forto, the guard captain, were still marveling at meeting such a righteous mage, unaware that Gildarts was merely afraid of the bill....
——
A little while later.
Gildarts finally caught up with Gaal and Gray, complaining, "Hey, Gaal. Why are you running so fast? You made me chase you for so long."
Gaal shrugged and smiled, "Of course, it's because this place is secluded."
It's convenient for fighting, though he didn't say that out loud.
Gildarts looked puzzled, "Secluded?"
Looking around, he saw nothing but mountains and stones, devoid of vegetation, and nodded in agreement, "It is quite remote."
"Speaking of which, how did you end up here? Is this kid your new apprentice?"
Gaal shook his head, replying, "No, he's planning to join Fairy Tail. He already has a master."
"As for why we're here.... I came to find you."
Gildarts paused, asking, "Find me? Did something happen at the guild? That shouldn't be the case. Even though Ivan isn't strong, there's still the old man around. What could go wrong?"
Gaal's mouth twitched, "He is, after all, the old man's son; show him some respect. Sounds like he's some kind of nobody."
Gildarts raised his hands in indifference, "You know as well as I do. That guy has a screw loose; he always targets me. I haven't offended him."
Gaal sighed, uncertain how to respond to that.
He knew about the tension between Gildarts and Ivan ever since he joined Fairy Tail.
Ivan was usually fine, but when faced with Gildarts, he acted like a different person.
With all sorts of passive-aggressive remarks, even Gildarts, who normally shrugged off things, began to notice the pattern. After a couple of incidents, Gildarts was still gracious enough to let it slide for the old man's sake.
However, over time, Gildarts could no longer tolerate it.
So he resolved to settle it through a fight.
Though the outcome of that battle was unknown, it didn't take a genius to figure it out; after all, Gildarts wielded Super Advanced Destruction Magic—Crush, while Ivan specialized in Illusion Magic.
Illusion Magic could handle regular mages, but against someone like Gildarts….
After that unresolved fight, the two had not been seen together in the guild since.
The old man Makarov found himself in a very awkward position in between.
He couldn't even understand why things had become this way, nor why Ivan targeted Gildarts so mercilessly.
And as Gaal spent more time in the guild, he gradually understood both of their personalities.
He was able to speculate why Ivan had become like this.
Ivan, the son of Makarov and an S-Class Mage of Fairy Tail, was supposed to step up and naturally take over the guild when the time came during a period when Fairy Tail's members were in flux.
However, one day, a much more powerful Gildarts arrived, someone who could easily crush him and had a better rep than him.
As the son of Makarov and an S-Class Mage of Fairy Tail, Ivan couldn't take it, yet he couldn't defeat Gildarts either, which led him to resort to petty jabs.
Gildarts could tolerate it once or twice since he was a powerhouse, but after repeated provocations, he could no longer hold back.
In one overwhelming fight, Gildarts shattered Ivan's conviction.
Could Ivan accept that?
No, he could not.
He was the son of the third Guild Master of Fairy Tail, an S-Class Mage, and here he was getting beaten by a newcomer.
He fell into a deranged pursuit of absolute power.
Fortunately, Ivan still had a son to keep his attention occupied.
He placed half his focus on resolving Laxus' physical issues.
As Ivan journeyed to the Southern Continent to look for the magical crystals made from the Thunder Dragon's heart, even this burden of Laxus would eventually vanish.
Regardless of the outcome, one would surely leave the guild.
The key to this predicament is that it couldn't be dissuaded.
Given Ivan's personality and pride, the old man attempting to counsel him would only stoke the fire; if he believes his own father thinks he can't surpass Gildarts, it would probably drive Ivan to become bitter.
If he were to talk to Gildarts, even if Gildarts agreed to restrain himself and accommodate Ivan, it would only give Ivan the impression that Gildarts was looking down on him, which could similarly lead to Ivan's downfall....
If Makarov were to formally hand over the guild to Ivan, Ivan would never agree—what does that mean? Passing on the position to me, while rejecting Gildarts? That's a surefire path to blacken his heart....
That stubborn personality is just fundamentally unresolvable.
In truth, if things progressed methodically, Gildarts would never truly want to be the guild master.
Eventually, the position would fall to Ivan.
However, Ivan's pride couldn't accept that conclusion.
He had been the chosen one, showered with accolades from a young age, only to suddenly be crushed by some country bumpkin.
In circumstances like this, one either breaks free and transforms or descends into madness.
Let him clean up the scraps?
He'd rather kill him....
