Chapter 60: Wind Breathing is easy
Wind Hashira: ? ? ?
Sanemi's face signaled that something was amiss.
At this moment, Sanemi also realized something was wrong.
"Ren," he said, "it's not impossible for you to learn my Wind Breathing."
"I think your talent is quite decent. For Kocho Shinobu's sake, I can take you on as my student."
"How about it? I'll teach you Wind Breathing myself!"
Sanemi's voice was loud, carrying an air of confidence.
Although he didn't have much of a relationship with Ren, there was no harm in becoming his master.
Historically, many masters and disciples have gone from being at odds to working together for the greater good—especially when united against the Demon King Muzan.
Besides, if Ren became his disciple, couldn't he just observe how Ren used his patterns every day?
Then, with his own talent, Sanemi could analyze and improve himself bit by bit.
If that happened, even the other Hashira might not be able to defeat him!
Sanemi grinned. He felt like his plan was flawless.
Looking at Ren, he waited for his reply.
Ren, however, showed a calm and slightly helpless expression. "I really don't know what's going on in that simple mind of yours. When did I say I wanted to secretly learn Wind Breathing from you?"
Sanemi froze, stunned. "What did you just say?"
"Nothing, nothing," Ren waved dismissively, glancing at Sanemi with a mix of exasperation and amusement.
What's he going on about? I just said we could interfere with each other during the competition. I never said anything about becoming his student. Why's he getting ahead of himself here?
Ren then said, "Actually, you don't need to teach me anything at all. I can learn Wind Breathing just by watching it once. Isn't that simple enough?"
Sanemi's eyes widened, his brain seemingly short-circuiting as he stammered, "What… what did you just say?!"
Clearly, Sanemi had lost his composure.
Isn't Wind Breathing very simple?
What kind of absurdity is this kid spouting?
If Wind Breathing were truly so easy to master, why would the Demon Slayer Corps even need trainers?!
But then, Kyojuro's words made Sanemi even more dumbfounded.
"That's true," Kyojuro said loudly. "Ren learned Flame Breathing just yesterday by watching me demonstrate it once."
As he spoke, a trace of admiration appeared in Kyojuro's eyes.
"Not only that, but Ren even improved my breathing technique!"
"This improvement not only cured my leg issues but also allowed Ren to create Fire Breathing as a derivative of Flame Breathing!"
Hiss!
Sanemi's mind felt like it had been flipped upside down.
"You're saying… Fire Breathing? Not Flame Breathing?" Sanemi repeated in disbelief.
"Yes, Fire Breathing!" Kyojuro confirmed firmly.
Sanemi scoffed.
Although he didn't know how Ren had convinced Kyojuro, this claim was ridiculous.
Derivatives of Breathing Techniques weren't unheard of, but deriving an entirely new technique the first time someone learns one? Outrageous!
And according to Kyojuro, Fire Breathing was somehow superior to Flame Breathing?
Sanemi couldn't believe his ears.
Flame Breathing was one of the five basic Breathing Techniques. For Fire Breathing to be superior was like saying Flame Breathing itself was flawed!
Unless Sanemi saw it with his own eyes, he wouldn't believe it.
He turned to glare at Ren, his frustration reaching its peak.
Learn Wind Breathing by watching it once? Do you think I'm some sort of joke? What do you take me for?
Sanemi wore an arrogant expression. "Fine! Fine! Let's start already. I'll turn the tables and beat you this time!"
He glanced at Kocho Shinobu. "What's the final challenge?"
Kocho Shinobu smiled slightly. "Rehabilitation training."
"Rehabilitation training?" Sanemi repeated, stunned.
He paused, his face showing signs of deep thought.
Ren quickly saw through him. "You don't even know what rehabilitation training is, do you?"
Sanemi's face darkened. "That's none of your business! I heal faster than most people, so why would I ever need rehabilitation training?"
Arrogant.
Truly too arrogant.
Ren narrowed his eyes. Clearly, Sanemi's physical fitness was extraordinary.
For a moment, Ren thought about wrestling with Sanemi directly, but he realized it might not be as simple as he first thought.
From what Ren remembered of the battle in the Infinity Castle, Sanemi was among the strongest of the Hashira.
If Ren underestimated him, he could lose miserably tomorrow.
"I'll explain it," Kocho Shinobu interjected, stepping between the two.
She smiled sweetly and began her explanation.
"Rehabilitation training involves joint stretching, reaction recovery, and full-body recovery through games like cat and mouse. Patients recovering from injuries regain their physical functionality through this training. Each successful recovery earns one point."
Sanemi frowned. "But how does Ren have three hundred points? There aren't even three hundred patients in the Butterfly Mansion!"
Ren smiled faintly. "It seems Mr. Sanemi has a lot of objections to my points. That's fine. Since I proposed changing the rules, I'll give you a chance."
"Otherwise, with you three hundred points behind, even if we include the dogs at the Butterfly Mansion, it won't be enough for you to catch up."
Sanemi's face flushed. "What did you say?!"
Kocho Shinobu quickly stepped in to stop him. "All right, Mr. Sanemi. This is the Butterfly Mansion. Save it for the competition."
Sanemi glared at Ren but backed down reluctantly.
The tension eased, but Kocho Shinobu sighed in exasperation.
She glanced at Ren with a hint of blame, her expression seemingly saying, If you stir up trouble again, I'll throw you out.
Ren, however, smiled warmly at her, his gaze softening.
Kocho Shinobu's cheeks turned red, her heart inexplicably skipping a beat.
In this little confrontation, Ren had clearly come out ahead.
